SEASON IN REVIEW - The Packers who had hopes of improving off a 4-12 season with new Coach Mike McCarthy didn't start off on the right foot as they were shutout in their season opener at Lambeau Field by the rival Chicago Bears 26-0. After losing their first two games at home, the Packers earned their first win in Detroit beating the Lions 31-24 as Brett Favre passed the 400 career Touchdown milestones with 3 TD passes and 340 yards passing. However, the Packers would continue to struggle as they dropped their next two games to enter the bye week 1-4. Following the bye week, the Packers played much better, as they won three of their next four games. However, at home their struggles continued as they were shutout for the second time at Lambeau Field by the New England Patriots 35-0, as Brett Favre missed the second half with an injury, as back up Aaron Rodgers struggled completing just 4-of-12 passes for 32 yards, before getting injured himself. While Rodgers was lost for a season, Favre shook of the injuries and continued his streak of starts, which at season's end was 257, including playoff games. However after two more losses it was going to take a miracle for the Packers who were 4-8 to make the playoffs in 2006. That's not to say the Packers were going to give up as they stunned the San Francisco 49ers on the road 30-19 as Donald Driver had a stellar game with 169 receiving yards. After struggling at home all season the Packers kept their faint playoff hopes alive by beating the Lions and Minnesota Vikings to improve to 7-8 heading into the final game of the season a rematch with the Bears in Chicago. With the Bears-Packers game taking place in primetime the Packersnow when kickoff arrived if they had a chance to make the playoffs. Unfortunately for the Packers, they were not able to get the help they need, but they beat the Bears any way 26-7 finishing with an 8-8 record. Following the season Brett Favre would not mull retirement long as he announced his intentions to return early, with several of Dan Marino career passing records in reach.

(GREEN BAY) - A sure sign of poise from a rookie quarterback: Vince Young even lobbies for instant-replay calls like a veteran. Young was impressive in his first exhibition start for the Tennessee Titans, consistently turning third downs into first downs in a 35-21 victory over the Green Bay Packers on Friday afternoon. Young's lone touchdown pass came on a successful replay challenge by the Titans in the first quarter, but Young had an apparent touchdown called back on a replay challenge by the Packers in the third quarter. Young played the Titans' first three series and returned for much of the third quarter of the two teams' exhibition finale, completing 8-of-17 passes for 80 yards and a touchdown. The Titans signed veteran Kerry Collins on Monday, a possible sign that they are abandoning their plan to open the season with Billy Volek as their starter. Volek did everything he could to make his case on Friday, finding Brandon Jones on a crossing route for a 54-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter to give the Titans a 21-7 lead. But it wasn't much of an opportunity, as Young returned on the following series and Volek didn't see the field again. Collins was 7-for-13 for 96 yards in the first half, leading the Titans to a quick touchdown after Tennessee recovered a fumble by Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers. His only major slip came at the end of the first half, when he completed a pass short of the end zone and time expired before the Titans could attempt a field goal. The Packers, of course, don't have any ambiguity at quarterback. Brett Favre found rookie Greg Jennings on Green Bay's first play from scrimmage for an 89-yard completion, setting up a touchdown run by Ahman Green on the next play. But the Packers have plenty of other questions to answer. The Packers originally wanted to play Friday's game on Thursday night, but the league wouldn't allow them to play two games within three days. They opted to play Thursday afternoon to not distract from local high school football games. Playing only four days after an embarrassing 48-17 loss at Cincinnati on Monday night -- and without starting cornerbacks Al Harris and Charles Woodson -- the Green Bay defense looked soft again Friday. And once Favre and several other offensive starters left the game after the two-play opening drive, Rodgers struggled to get much going. Rodgers was 8-for-15 for 81 yards and a touchdown, but was sacked three times and lost a fumble. The Packers also struggled on punt returns and had 11 penalties for 95 yards.

(SAN DIEGO) - Chargers coach Marty Schottenheimer has high expectations for new quarterback Philip Rivers. Rivers didn't disappoint in his debut, throwing for 169 first-half yards and leading two early scoring drives in a 17-3 victory over Green Bay in Saturday night's preseason opener for both teams. The Chargers showed their faith in Rivers, a third-year pro, by letting Drew Brees leave for New Orleans during the offseason. Cool in the pocket and crisp with his passes, Rivers completed 15-of-21 while playing the entire first half except for the final play. He connected on a 22-yard touchdown pass to Vincent Jackson on the Chargers' opening series to cap a 64-yard drive, then engineered an 18-play, 86-yard scoring march the first time they had the ball in the second quarter. Packers quarterback Brett Favre, pressured by the San Diego defense for most of the four series he played, was unable to generate much. The loss spoiled the head coaching debut of Green Bay's Mike McCarthy. The 36-year-old Favre, who pondered retirement in the offseason but decided to return, completed 5 of 10 passes for 66 yards and was sacked twice on consecutive plays in the first quarter. (GREEN BAY) - A couple of their touchdowns might have come on fluke plays, but the Packers offense suddenly looked legitimate. One week after being held to a single field goal in San Diego, the Packers put together several sustained scoring drives in a preseason victory. Brett Favre was 16-of-22 for 134 yards, throwing two touchdown passes to cap long drives and leading the Packers to a field goal after an interception by Falcons quarterback Michael Vick. Falcons coach Jim Mora said he was happy with his first-team offense but needs to see more from his reserves. Vick played only the first two series for Atlanta, looking sharp on a seven-play, 80-yard drive on the first. Vick threw a 22-yard touchdown pass to tight end Dwayne Blakley to give the Falcons a 7-0 lead. Favre answered by driving the Packers to the 3, where he threw a short pass that skipped off the hands of tight end David Martin and was caught by Bubba Franks to tie it at 7. Vick was intercepted by Packers rookie Tyrone Culver on the Falcons' second series, and left the game after completing 5 of 7 passes for 59 yards.

(CINCINNATI) - Carson Palmer aced the test. With a brace protecting his rebuilt left knee, the Bengals QB took the hits, avoided the rush and threw three touchdown passes Monday night in his first game back. By halftime of the victory, Palmer had convincingly made his case that he'll be ready for the season opener. Showing no hesitation to take a tackle or take off on a scramble, Palmer completed 9 of 14 passes for 140 yards and three touchdowns. It felt like old times when he pointed his right index finger to the sky after his second touchdown. Palmer's return was the cornerstone of a buoyant night for the Bengals, who are 3-0 in preseason for the first time since 1976 and have clinched their first winning preseason since 1988. (GREEN BAY) - Brett Favre is back. The Chicago Bears did their best to make sure nobody noticed. The Bears delivered the first shutout of Favre's 16-year career on Sunday, beating the Packers. For the Bears, shutting out Favre who has a 21-8 career record against the Bears took away some of the sting of their 29-21 playoff loss to Carolina in January. Favre, who deliberated for several months before deciding to return to the Packers this season, spent much of the first half on the sideline as quarterback Rex Grossman led Chicago on several long drives. Grossman found wide receiver Bernard Berrian for a 49-yard touchdown pass on the opening drive. It was the Bears' only offensive touchdown of the day, but Chicago continued to move the ball well enough to keep the ball largely out of Favre's hands. And when Favre was in the game, he mostly handed off until it was too late. Favre threw only five passes in the first half, completing all five for only 70 yards. The Packers opened up the offense in the second half, but Favre couldn't find the end zone and threw interceptions to Charles Tillman and Danieal Manning in the fourth quarter. Favre, who threw a career-worst 29 interceptions last season, finished 15-of-29 for 170 yards. Grossman was 18-of-26 for 262 yards as he ran his career record to 3-0 at Lambeau Field. On the Bears' sixth play from scrimmage, Grossman heaved a deep pass to Berrian, who caught it in stride and turned it into a 49-yard touchdown. It was the first time the Packers were shut out since a 10-0 victory by the Bears on Oct. 17, 1991, a streak of 233 games. It was the fourth-longest such streak in league history and second-longest active streak. It was the Bears' first shutout since a 24-0 victory at Detroit on Dec. 30, 2001.

(GREEN BAY) - With his team taking an unbeaten record into the Louisiana Superdome next Monday night, Joe Horn knows people in New Orleans will have something positive to holler about. After a 34-27 victory over the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field on Sunday, Horn doesn't want his teammates to get caught up in the hoopla, though. After winning their first two games on the road, the Saints will play their first true home game since 2004 next Monday night against Atlanta. The Saints spent last season without a home after Hurricane Katrina ravaged their city, and their stadium first became a shelter, then a symbol for governmental mismanagement of a disaster. Saints quarterback Drew Brees overcame three early turnovers by completing 26 of 41 passes for 353 yards. With the game tied at 20, Brees threw a 35-yard pass to Marques Colston for a 27-20 edge with 8:20 remaining. Ahman Green fumbled after Colston's touchdown, and Saints back Deuce McAllister ran 23 yards for his second score. Brett Favre's 6-yard pass to running back Noah Herron cut the Saints' lead to 34-27 with 4:18 remaining. The Packers got the ball again with 3:09 remaining and Favre drove to the Saints 44. But Favre threw four straight incompletions, leaving the Packers with two losses at home to start the season.

(PHILADELPHIA) - Donovan McNabb juked and jived the way he did early in his career. Brett Favre had a throwback night, too to his days of erratic interceptions. McNabb ran for two touchdowns and threw for a pair, leading the Eagles over the Packers on Monday night. Meanwhile, Favre, who has enjoyed many memorable moments on the national stage throughout his 16-year career, would like to forget this one. Favre misfired badly on several passes, including two interceptions that led to scores. He left with a slight head injury late in the fourth quarter, but Packers coach Mike McCarthy said he didn't think the injury was serious. McNabb finished 16-of-30 for 288 yards and had 47 yards rushing. He scored on runs of 6 and 15 yards, and connected with Greg Lewis on TD passes of 45 and 30 yards.

(GREEN BAY) - St. Louis used to be the most stylish team in the NFL. Now they're winning ugly -- to the tune of a surprising 4-1 start. The Rams staved off a fourth-quarter comeback attempt by the Packers, walking away with a victory at Lambeau Field after a big defensive play in the final minute. What used to be the "Greatest Show on Turf" under former coach Mike Martz isn't much of a show at all under new coach Scott Linehan. But so far, Linehan's more conservative offensive approach is a hit. Favre was relatively quiet for three quarters before rallying the Packers for a fourth-quarter touchdown to rookie Greg Jennings that cut the Rams lead to three with 6:42 remaining. Favre then got the ball back with 2:46 remaining, and drove the Packers to the Rams 11-yard line with 44 seconds left. But Favre was pressured by defensive lineman Jimmy Kennedy, and Leonard Little poked the ball away from Favre. The ball bounced around before landing in the hands of Rams defensive back Jerametrius Butler. Little, who needed three IVs after the game, was prodded to make a play on the sideline by defensive coordinator Jim Haslett earlier in the game. He finally did, but watched as the ball nearly was recovered by Packers offensive lineman Daryn Colledge. With the Rams leading 17-13 and driving late in the third quarter, Marc Bulger threw Harris' way at the Green Bay 14, an errant pass that hit Harris in the numbers. But instead of running 95 yards down a clear path for a go-ahead touchdown, Harris dropped the ball. Would he have gone all the way? "You never know," Harris said.

(MIAMI) - The Packers' defenders were more sure-handed than the Dolphins' receivers. Ranked last in the NFL in pass defense, Green Bay intercepted Joey Harrington three times and benefited from half a dozen dropped passes by the woeful Dolphins to win. Brett Favre threw two touchdown passes, including the clincher to David Martin with six minutes left, and Ahman Green scored on a 70-yard run. But it was big plays by Green Bay's beleaguered defense that made the difference. The Packers doubled their season interception total, and the takeaways led to 13 points. Charles Woodson made his first interception with Green Bay and returned it 23 yards for a score. Interceptions by linebackers Brady Poppinga and Nick Barnett set up a pair of field goals. Green Bay beat the Dolphins in Miami for the first time in seven tries, battling fatigue and cramps in steamy, 86-degree weather to finish strong. The last time the Packers won in South Florida was in Vince Lombardi's final game as their coach in the 1968 Super Bowl against Oakland. Harrington set a Miami regular-season record with 62 passing attempts. He completed 33 for a career-high 414 yards and two touchdowns, but much of the yardage came with the Dolphins trying to play catch-up in a hurry-up offense. They scored only two touchdowns despite running 83 plays.

(GREEN BAY) - Green Bay had two 100-yard rushers and Brett Favre did his first "Lambeau Leap'' on Sunday. Both were signs that things are perhaps starting to turn around for the Packers. Or maybe the Cardinals are just that bad. Ahman Green and Vernand Morency combined for 207 yards rushing and Green added two first-half touchdowns as the Packers won 31-14 for their first home victory under first-year coach Mike McCarthy. The Packers have won two straight after losing four of their first five, including three at Lambeau. The Cardinals came into this year with playoff expectations, but have lost seven straight since opening the season at their new stadium with a victory over San Francisco a losing streak that's likely to stoke speculation that Dennis Green will be fired before the end of the year. The Packers sacked rookie quarterback Matt Leinart four times and held him to 61 yards passing in the first half. Leinart, the No. 10 overall pick in the draft, finished with 157 yards passing and a touchdown, but is 0-4 as an NFL starter. The Cardinals continued to give the ball to running back Edgerrin James, with disappointing results. James rushed 24 times for 84 yards as the Cardinals' offensive line continued to have a hard time opening holes. James had a rushing touchdown near the end of the first half, but the Cardinals went to halftime trailing 21-7. The Packers' first possession ended with a botched fake field-goal attempt, but they scored on their next three drives to take a 21-0 lead. Favre threw a 1-yard touchdown pass to tight end David Martin in the first quarter, and Green added touchdown runs of 4 and 2 yards in the second quarter. Favre was 17-of-25 for 180 yards, and added a touchdown run on the Packers' first possession of the third quarter his first since a Dec. 3, 2001, game at Jacksonville.

(BUFFALO) - When Willis McGahee went down, London Fletcher and the Buffalo defense stepped up. The linebacker scored on a 17-yard interception return and keyed a four-takeaway outing in Buffalo's win over the Packers on Sunday. It didn't matter to Fletcher that the Bills offense generated just 90 yards and four first downs through three quarters, or that Buffalo was minus its most potent threat, McGahee. The running back hurt his ribs 4 minutes in and didn't return. The offense did just enough in ending a three-game losing streak and helping the Bills improve to 3-5. Not that the final outcome was reflected on the stat sheet, which weighed heavily in Green Bay's favor. The Packers out-gained the Bills 427 yards offense to 184. Green Bay had 26 first downs to Buffalo's 11, and controlled the ball for nearly 9 more minutes. Brett Favre finished 28-of-47 for 287 yards passing, while Buffalo's J.P. Losman was a modest 8-of-15 for 102 yards. The difference? Turnovers. Buffalo didn't commit one, a switch after Losman had committed eight, including five interceptions, in his previous three starts. Green Bay's four turnovers were one more than it had committed in its previous three games. Green Bay lost in its attempt to win three straight for the first time in two years and dropped to 0-5 all-time at Buffalo.

to his own team, not the other guys. Favre followed through on the plan, making sure to savor a hard-to-come-by win at the Metrodome and cautiously ponder the progress made by his rebuilding Packers. Favre threw two touchdown passes without a turnover and Donald Driver had a career-high 191 yards receiving. "I thought he made great decisions," Green Bay coach Mike McCarthy said, praising Favre's performance with Minnesota's
league-best rushing defense holding down Ahman Green (22 carries, 55 yards). The Packers, who have won three of their last four games, were boosted by a strong pass rush and even better pass protection. Favre completed 24 of 42 passes for 347 yards and no interceptions. Brad Johnson went 18 for 30 for 257 yards, one touchdown and two turnovers for Minnesota, which lost its third straight game after again struggling in several areas. Vikings coach Brad Childress, who was upset with some of Johnson's on-field choices in recent weeks, directed his criticism at the rest of the struggling offense.

(GREEN BAY) - Brett Favre wasn't around to finish the game. Vinny Testaverde was. The Patriots forced the three-time MVP off the field with an elbow injury near the end of the first half, then snapped their first losing streak in nearly four years with a 35-0 victory at Lambeau Field. Tom Brady threw for 244 yards and four touchdowns before he was replaced by backup Matt Cassel late in the fourth quarter. Testaverde, who was signed by New England earlier this week, then came in to run out the clock. New England had lost two straight games at home, its first losing streak since the end of the 2002 season, but is 5-0 on the road this year. The Patriots had Sunday's game well under control even before Favre was injured. New England had run up a 21-0 lead with under two minutes left in the first half when linebacker Tully Banta-Cain wrapped Favre up in the backfield and Tedy Bruschi jumped in to finish the sack. Bruschi's hit slammed Favre to the ground on his throwing arm, and the three-time MVP got up wincing. Favre, who made his 251st consecutive start on Sunday including playoff games, was replaced by second-year player Aaron Rodgers. Favre walked back out of the locker room shortly after halftime, but Rodgers played the remainder of the game.

(SEATTLE) - It took a blast of rare Seattle snow to lift Shaun Alexander out of his season-long hibernation. Alexander ran for a season-high 201 yards Monday night to lead the Seahawks over the Packers on a surprisingly snowy night in Seattle. With the white stuff falling for the first time at a Seattle home game, it seemed like a more natural setting for the Packers. Favre, who fell to 41-9 when the temperature is 34 degrees or less, was making his 252nd straight start and possibly his final appearance on the Monday-night stage he has lit up over his shining career. Instead, the evening belonged to Alexander, who skated across this new frozen tundra for his first 100-yard game of the season and showed that his broken left foot is feeling much better. The Seahawks, embarrassed last week in a 20-14 loss at San Francisco, took a two-game lead in the NFL West. They overcame four first-half turnovers by Matt Hasselbeck including one returned for a touchdown by Abdul Hodge thanks to four field goals off the snowy turf by Josh Brown. Alexander said he could relate to his quarterback's struggles in his first game back from a knee injury. Trailing 21-12 early in the second half, Seattle began its comeback behind Alexander, who finished the night with a career-high 40 rushes that also set a franchise record. The reigning MVP, who posted the second 200-yard game of his career, also bested his previous high of 35 carries. He ran for 42 yards on four carries to drive Seattle to its go-ahead score early in the fourth quarter. Hasselbeck ended that drive with a perfectly lofted, 4-yard touchdown pass onto the hands of Darrell Jackson for a 27-21 lead. After Green Bay cut the deficit to three, Alexander got the Seahawks close to the end zone, then Hasselbeck made the best throw of his up-and-down night a 3-yard touchdown to Jerramy Stevens in the back of the end zone to make it 34-24 and essentially put the game away. Hasselback, returning after a four-week layoff with a sprained right knee, finished 17-for-36 for 157 yards and three touchdowns to offset his three interceptions.

Then Chad Pennington stoked the Jets' hopes of an improbable playoff run. Pennington, who snapped out of a midseason streak of shaky performances in a victory over Houston last week, put together three touchdown drives of 70 yards or more in the second quarter and the Jets cruised over the Packers at Lambeau Field on Sunday. New York built a 31-0 halftime lead as snow flurries floated to the ground and boos showered down from the grandstands on a windy 19-degree day. The Jets used frequent wide-receiver motion and occasional no-huddle offense to confuse a Green Bay defense that has been prone to miscommunication and susceptible to big plays all season. Pennington, 25-of-35 for 263 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions, connected with eight receivers. Cedric Houston carried 22 times for a career-high 105 yards and two touchdowns. Fans booed the Packers several times during the first half and loudly as they jogged to the tunnel at halftime. Green Bay barely managed to avoid being shut out at home for the third time this season. McCarthy called for a field goal with his team down 31-0 midway through the third quarter, and Dave Rayner hit a 34-yarder, a move that elicited sarcastic applause from Packers fans, a Midwestern version of the Bronx cheer. Brett Favre's season-long struggles with passing accuracy continued as he was 24-of-47 for 214 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions.

(SAN FRANCISCO) - The aching ankle, the injured pride and the Packers' losing record all stopped hurting as soon as Brett Favre stepped on some familiar turf. A visit to Candlestick Park does wonders for Favre, and given the way he played, this might not even be his last trip to San Francisco. Favre carved up Candlestick again, passing for 293 yards and hitting Donald Driver for a 68-yard touchdown as the Packers snapped a three-game losing streak with a win over the slumping 49ers. Playing in the waterfront stadium that hosted some of his greatest playoff performances, Favre was steady and fearless while breathing life back into the Packers, who had been floundering on offense since early November. Favre has won 11 of his 12 meetings with the 49ers over 15 years, throwing a TD pass in each game -- and rarely looking better than he did in this one. "It wasn't a championship game, it wasn't a playoff game, but I've grown to appreciate these more and more," said Favre, who went 22-for-34 and passed 3,000 yards passing for the 15th straight season to extend his own NFL record.

(GREEN BAY) - Brett Favre became the NFL's all-time completions leader Sunday and the Packers beat Detroit. Listening to a dour Favre speak after the game, you wouldn't have known it. "I have to remind myself that this is a win," Favre said. Favre broke Dan Marino's career completions record, but the Packers had to overcome three interceptions by the three-time MVP for a 17-9 victory over the Lions. It was only the second home victory all season for the Packers (6-8), who have won two in a row. Given the sorry state of the NFC, some Packers players were talking playoffs after the game. Detroit remains winless in seven games on the road. Favre connected on a 21-yard pass to receiver Carlyle Holiday just before halftime for his league-record 4,968th completion. Referee Ed Hochuli delivered the news. Favre was 20-of-37 for 174 yards, but failed to throw a touchdown pass. With two games remaining in the season, Favre needs eight more touchdown passes to pass Marino's career mark of 420. Favre now has 4,974 career completions, seven ahead of Marino. Last week, Favre extended his record of most consecutive and overall seasons with 3,000 yards passing to 15.

(GREEN BAY) - It might have been Brett Favre's final fling at Lambeau Field, and it wasn't pretty. But after nearly throwing the game away, Favre helped the Packers pull out yet another come-from-behind victory. Favre watched an interception get returned for a touchdown in the third quarter, then rallied the Packers for a late field goal and a victory against the Vikings. Packers kicker Dave Rayner, who had missed two field goals earlier in the game, hit a 44-yarder with 1:34 remaining. It was the 36th game-winning comeback for Favre, who has not yet announced whether he will play next season and did not speak with reporters following the game. He held the ball aloft after the final gun, and hugged a couple of former teammates now with the Vikings, safety Darren Sharper and kicker Ryan Longwell. He also saluted his family in a Lambeau skybox, along with the fans surrounding the tunnel to the locker room. Favre finished the game 26-for-50 for 285 yards with the two interceptions. He didn't throw a touchdown for the second successive game, meaning he still needs eight more TD passes to break Dan Marino's career record of 420. Favre won ugly for the second successive week -- he was intercepted three times in a victory against Detroit on Dec. 17 -- but he certainly outperformed Vikings rookie Tarvaris Jackson, who was making the first start of his NFL career. Jackson, a second-round draft pick out of Alabama State, was 10-for-20 for 50 yards and one interception.

(CHICAGO) - If, indeed, this was his last game, Brett Favre went out in style. The rocket-like passes that defined his career were on full display, zooming between helpless defenders and into receivers' hands. And when it was over, his voice cracked. Tears flowed. Is this really it, though? "If this is the last game, I couldn't be more pleased with the outcome," Favre said after the Packers closed out the season with a 26-7 victory against the Bears. Favre had his way, Rex Grossman looked lost, and the Bears bore little resemblance to a No. 1 playoff seed. Favre showed he still has some plenty left in that powerful right arm, passing for 285 yards to lead the Packers. But he tearfully hinted that he's seriously considering retirement, as he did in the last offseason. "If this is my last game, I want to remember it," Favre said, his voice cracking and tears streaming from his eyes. "It's tough. I love these guys. I love this game. What a great way to go out against a great football team. I couldn't ask for a better way to get out." Favre said he would discuss retirement with his family and make his announcement soon, "probably within the next couple of weeks." For now, the only certainty is he's scheduled for ankle surgery Jan. 1 in Green Bay. The three-time MVP completed 21 of 42 passes with a touchdown and interception. He had 209 yards in the first half alone as the Packers grabbed a 23-0 lead, and he moved into a tie with Dan Marino for second place on the victories list with 147. Favre needs one more to tie John Elway. Favre was in vintage form, but the inconsistent Grossman showed his bad side. He was 2-for-12 with three interceptions, two of which were returned for touchdowns and a zero passer rating in the first half and did not come out for the second. It was the first time a quarterback recorded three interceptions and two completions since New Orleans' Richard Todd in 1984. And the debate over whether he or Brian Griese should start for the Bears (13-3) is back on, even if coach Lovie Smith said he won't make a change. The Packers were all but eliminated from the postseason when the New York Giants beat Washington on Dec. 30. And their final hopes were dashed before the kickoff. Still, they took it to a Chicago team that has home-field advantage throughout the playoffs and was trying to become only the fourth team to go undefeated in conference play since the AFL-NFL merger in 1970.

Mike McCarthy became the first Packers coach to face the Bears in his debut since Vince Lombardi in 1959. The game also kept one of the oddest NFL facts intact - no Packer coach has played his first official league on the road:
* CURLY LAMBEAU (October 23, 1921) - Green Bay 7, Minneapolis Marines 6 (Hagemeister Park) - After the Marines took the lead on a 3-yard run by Ben Dvorak, the Packers won late in the fourth, when Art Schmeal ran four yards for the tying score. Lambeau kicked the extra point for the win.
* GENE RONZANI (September 17, 1950) - Detroit 45, Green Bay 7 (City Stadium) - Bo McMillan's "new" Detroit Lions, sparked by Bobby Layne's passing, romped over the Packers. The former Texas whiz completed eight of 12 passes for 171 yards and one touchdown all in the first half.
* LIZ BLACKBOURN (September 26, 1954) - Pittsburgh 21, Green Bay 20 (City Stadium) - It was a 37-yard pass from Jim Finks to Ray Matthews in the last five minutes of play that pulled the Steelers into a tie. Ed Kissell, who kicked Pittsburgh's first two extra points, aggravated a back injury and Paul Held came in to kick the game-winning point, just clearing the crossbar.
* SCOOTER MCLEAN (September 28, 1958) - Chicago Bears 34, Green Bay 20 (City Stadium) - Willie Galimore scored three touchdowns on rushes of one and eight yards and a 79-yard pass for the Bears. On the bright side, rookie LB Ray Nitschke forced a fumble, blocked a field goal attempt, and pressured Chicago QB Ed Brown into an interception.
* VINCE LOMBARDI (September 27, 1959) - Green Bay 9, Chicago Bears 6 (City Stadium) - The last time Green Bay held the "Monsters of the Midway" without a touchdown was in 1938 when the Bears won, 2-0. Jim Ringo pounced on a fumble on the Bears' 26 to set up the victory. Paul Hornung and Jim Taylor, took turns rushing, until Taylor swung around end from the five for the score.
* PHIL BENGSTON (September 15, 1968) - Green Bay 30, Philadelphia 13 (Lambeau Field) - The Packers were 17-point favorites. Bart Starr hit on 14 of 18 passes for 230 yards and two first half touchdowns. And a 50-yard kickoff return by Herb Adderley, Bob Jeter's interception and rookie Francis Winkler's recovery of an Eagle onside kick kept the Packers rolling.
* DAN DEVINE (September 19, 1971) - NY Giants 42, Green Bay 40 (Lambeau Field) - A pair of second-quarter TDs on fumble recoveries just six seconds apart by LB Ralph Heck and S Joe Green on the ensuing kickoff, along with three TD receptions by WR Rich Houston, led the Giants. Green Bay's Ken Ellis tied an NFL record by returning a missed FG 100 yards for a touchdown. Devine broke his leg in a pileup following a 4th quarter interception by Doug Hart.
* BART STARR (September 21, 1975) - Detroit 30, Green Bay 16 (County Stadium) - The Lions convered three Steve Broussard blocked punts, two by Levi Johnson and one by Ben Davis into three touchdowns.
* FORREST GREGG (September 2, 1984) - Green Bay 24, St. Louis 23 (Lambeau Field) - Neil O'Donoghue missed a game- winning 45-yard field goal with 2:10 left in the game, as the Packers won their fifth straight opener.
* LINDY INFANTE (September 4, 1988) - Los Angeles 34, Green Bay 7 (Lambeau Field) - Green Bay lost 4 fumbles in the game, including 3 in the first quarter, and was intercepted 3 times, as the Rams ran out to a 21-0 halftime lead
* MIKE HOLMGREN (September 6, 1992) - Minnesota 23, Green Bay 20 (OT) - Terry Allen's 45-yard run to the Packer 11 set up Fuad Reveiz's 25-yard FG, giving Dennis Green the win in his first game as Vikings coach.
* RAY RHODES (September 12, 1999) - Green Bay 28, Oakland 24 - Brett Favre led the Packers on an 11-play, 82-yard TD drive in the final 1:51
* MIKE SHERMAN (September 3, 2000) - NY Jets 20, Green Bay 16 - Jets safety Victor Green intercepted a Favre pass deep in Jets' territory to dash Green Bay's hopes of a fourth-quarter comeback.
