September 8 : Green Bay Packers (1-0) 37, Atlanta Falcons (0-1) 34 (OT)
(Green Bay) - Ryan Longwell's 34-yard field goal with 5:15 left in overtime gave Green Bay a victory over Atlanta. Atlanta's Jay Feely sent it into overtime with a 52-yard field goal with five seconds left in regulation. That capped a six-play, 35-yard drive that followed William Henderson's dive into the end zone on fourth-and-inches with 1:10 left that had given Green Bay a 34-31 lead. The Packers avenged their only home loss last year behind Brett Favre, who completed 25 of 36 passes for 284 yards and two touchdowns, and Ahman Green, who rushed 27 times for 155 yards. Michael Vick, the top pick in last year's draft, was 15-of-23 for 209 yards and rushed nine times for 72 yards.

September 15 : New Orleans Saints (2-0) 35, Green Bay Packers (1-1) 20
(New Orleans) - Aaron Brooks outperformed mentor Brett Favre by throwing two touchdown passes, and the relentless New Orleans defense led the Saints past Green Bay. Brooks, who spent the 1999 season as Green Bay's third-string quarterback, was 16-of-28 for 217 yards as New Orleans jumped out to an early 21-3 lead. The Saints (2-0) allowed 357 total yards, but the Packers (1-1) had just 95 on the ground. Green Bay converted just 3 for 13 third downs, compared with 7 of 12 for the Saints. Favre, who had been 9-0 in the Superdome, including a Super Bowl win and two college victories, was on the run all game. He was 29-of-44 for 270 yards and two touchdowns. He was sacked once and broke his string of 158 straight passes without an interception when Darrin Smith picked off one in the first quarter. OT Mark Tauscher was lost for the season, after he went down late in the second quarter with an injury to the medial collateral ligament in his left knee and possibly cartilage damage.

September 22 : Green Bay Packers (2-1) 37, Detroit Lions (0-3) 31
(Detroit) - Brett Favre threw for 357 yards and three touchdowns as the Packers (2-1) held off the Lions (0-3) at the new Ford Field, spoiling rookie Joey Harrington's first start. Favre completed 31 of 47 passes and moved past Warren Moon for fourth on the NFL's all-time list with 294 TD passes. Detroit scored two TDs, including a 52-yard pass to James Stewart with 1:37 left, to cut the deficit to 34-31. An offside penalty negated the Lions' recovery on the onside kick, and Ryan Longwell's 47-yard field goal ended the scoring.

September 29 : Green Bay Packers (3-1) 17, Carolina Panthers (3-1) 14
(Green Bay) - Brett Favre found Donald Driver for a 22-yard touchdown with 4:10 left, leading the Packers to a 17-14 victory over the Carolina Panthers. Shayne Graham, signed by the Panthers two days ago to bolster their kicking game, missed a 24-yard field goal with 13 seconds left that would have tied the game. Favre was 18-of-32 for 200 yards with one interception. He now has 3,414 career completions, passing Joe Montana for fifth place on the all-time list. Driver had the first two-touchdown game of his career—though he caught the first one from Bubba Franks on a trick play in the second quarter. FB William Henderson's 114-game playing streak, the second-longest streak on the team behind Brett Favre's 163 straight, ended when he was inactive. He was sidelined by a knee injury suffered in the Detroit game. The attendance, 63,329, established a new Lambeau Field record. The previous mark, 63,127, was set at the regular season opener against Detroit (September 8).

October 7 : Green Bay Packers (4-1) 34, Chicago Bears (2-3) 21
(Chicago) - Champaign, Chicago, Green Bay. It doesn't matter where Brett Favre is when he plays against the Bears. Favre threw three first-half touchdown passes Monday night, surpassed 40,000 yards passing for his career and led the Packers to a 34-21 victory over the Bears. Favre, now 17-4 in his career against Chicago, had an 85-yard TD pass to Donald Driver in the first quarter—the second longest of his career—as the Packers (4-1) took a 24-14 halftone lead. Green Bay took control in the third quarter when Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila intercepted Chicago quarterback Jim Miller and lumbered 72 yards for a touchdown as the Bears (2-3) lost their third straight. The rivalry that began in 1921 has turned one-sided in recent years, thanks to the brilliance of Favre. Green Bay's victory Monday night was its 15th in the last 17 meetings with the Bears, this one coming on the grass-like artificial surface at the University of Illinois where Chicago is playing this season as Soldier Field is bring overhauled.

October 13 : Green Bay Packers (5-1) 28, New England Patriots (3-3) 10
(New England) - Brett Favre outplayed host New England's Tom Brady, throwing three touchdown passes to lead Green Bay to their fourth straight victory. Favre now has 301 TD passes for his career, moving him past John Elway into third place on the career list. Only Dan Marino (420) and Fran Tarkenton (342) have more. Favre also made his 163rd straight start, a record for NFL quarterbacks. Brady threw three interceptions and was just 24-of-44 for 183 yards. Favre was 17-of-27 for only 147 yards, but he didn't throw an interception. The revamped Packer defense opened the game with Tod McBride at left cornerback in place of Mike McKenzie, rookie Marques Anderson at strong safety in place of Darren Sharper, joining Matt Bowen in the secondary, where he had replaced starter Antuan Edwards four weeks earlier, after Edwards had suffered a broken arm. Additionally, rookie Aaron Kampman and third-year pro Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila, normally a designated pass-rusher, stepped in at the ends for Vonnie Holliday and Joe Johnson. Holliday is sidelined with a torn pectoral muscle and Johnson with a season-ending triceps injury.

October 20 : Green Bay Packers (6-1) 30, Washington Redskins (2-4) 9
(Green Bay) - Brett Favre hobbled off the field, leaving Green Bay to wonder how long it might be without its star quarterback. Favre, who started for the 164th consecutive time, sprained his left knee when he was sacked by LaVar Arrington in a victory over Washington. Ahman Green had the first three-touchdown rushing performance of his career, helping the Packers (6-1) to their fifth straight victory. Green ran for 88 yards on 24 carries and scored on runs of 24, 2 and 8 yards, the last one following Redskins quarterback Patrick Ramsey's fifth sack and third fumble, which was recovered by Rod Walker at the Washington 23 in the fourth quarter.

November 4 : Green Bay Packers (7-1) 24, Miami Dolphins (5-3) 10
(Green Bay) - Dave Wannstedt has been on the losing end three of the four times Brett Favre has come back from injury during his career. This time, the Miami Dolphins coach got to share his misery with Cris Carter, who came out of retirement only to watch Favre steal the show again. Favre had a much better return than Carter on Monday night, guiding Green Bay to a 24-10 victory over the Dolphins despite a sprained left knee that had threatened to end his decade-long starting streak. Carter, coming out of retirement following a nine-month layoff, had three inconsequential catches for 31 yards. He fumbled away his first reception, leading to the Packers' first touchdown, and was the target on an interception by linebacker Nate Wayne in the second half. Favre, knocked out of his last game, extended his NFL record for consecutive regular-season starts by a quarterback to 165. He overcame an early interception in the end zone to lead the Packers to their sixth straight victory. Favre didn't play like he was protecting his knee. Several times he scrambled toward the first-down marker with his usual abandon. The Packers, who have the NFL's best record at 7-1, also recorded four more takeaways to increase their league-leading total to 27 and held Miami running back Ricky Williams to 47 yards. Darren Sharper's 89-yard scoring runback of an interception was the fifth-longest in team history, surpassing the 88-yard runback of Bob Summerhays against Philadelphia on October 14, 1951, which had been the fifth-longest.

November 10 : Green Bay Packers (8-1) 40, Detroit Lions (3-6) 14
(Green Bay) - Brett Favre threw for 295 yards in the first half and finished with 351 yards and two scores, and the Packers ran off 37 straight points after falling behind 7-3. The Packers improved their NFL-best record to 8-1 while taking a five-game lead over second-place Detroit (3-6) in the NFC North. Green Bay has won seven straight, its longest regular-season streak since 1963.

November 17 : Minnesota Vikings (3-7) 31, Green Bay Packers (8-2) 21
(Minnesota) - It doesn't matter how well Green Bay is playing. The Packers always seem to have trouble in Minnesota. Daunte Culpepper threw for a touchdown and ran for another one, and the Vikings intercepted Brett Favre three times in a 31-21 victory. The Packers (8-2) have lost nine of 11 at the Metrodome and missed out on a chance to become the earliest team to clinch a division title in a 16-game season. Michael Bennett ran for 130 yards on 20 carries.

November 24 : Tampa Bay Buccaneers (9-2) 21, Green Bay Packers (8-3) 7
(Tampa Bay) - If the Packers have to come back to Tampa Bay later this season, it sure will be a heated game. The Buccaneers intercepted four of Brett Favre's passes and beat the Packers 21-7 in a meeting Sunday of the teams with the NFL's best records. The superb effort was overshadowed by an obscenity-laced exchange between Packers coach Mike Sherman and Tampa Bay defensive lineman Warren Sapp as they walked off the field. Sherman was angry about a block Sapp put on Chad Clifton during Brian Kelly's interception return in the third quarter that set up the Bucs' go-ahead touchdown. Sherman thought the hit was questionable and felt Sapp made it worse by standing over Clifton. "I just don't think there's any place in the game for that," Sherman said. "Maybe 1 overreacted to the hit. But what I saw looked kind of cheap. But who knows?" Clifton, who was not near Kelly, was knocked out of the game with a right hip injury. Sapp was unapologetic. "I didn't clip him from behind or block him below the waist. I didn't hit him in the head. I didn't hit the quarterback. I didn't rough anybody," Sapp said. "I didn't pick him up and slam him. What's the problem here?" Brad Johnson threw two second-half touchdown passes as the Bucs (9-2) improved on their best start ever and thrust themselves into position to make a run for home-field advantage in the playoffs. Favre was sacked three times and the Packers (8-3) didn't score after the first quarter. "We realized what was at stake and realized it was another brick in the road to the Super Bowl that has to come through Tampa," Sapp said.

December 1 : Green Bay Packers (9-3) 30, Chicago Bears (3-9) 20
(Green Bay) - Spectacular touchdown-saving plays by two backups named Walker allowed the Packers to win their first division title in five years. The Packers won despite losing Ahman Green to a knee injury after he had produced 123 yards of offense. Rookie Tony Fisher ran for 91 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries as the Packers (9-3) remained the only team without a loss at home. The Packers trailed 14-6 at halftime after rookie receiver Javon Walker ran about 100 yards and chased down Roosevelt Williams as he was about to dance into the end zone at the end of the first half. Green Bay still appeared on its way to another defeat when nose tackle Rod Walker snatched the ball from center Olin Kreutz just as he was snapping it to quarterback Jim Miller. Rod Walker timed the snap perfectly, grabbed the ball and pulled it back to his chest, covering up all in one fluid motion. "I had a friend who did it all the time in high school," Walker said. Defensive coordinator Ed Donatell saw something similar in peewee football; some teammates said they saw it in high school, but nobody could remember it happening in college. And never in the pros. The Packers then drove 90 yards — with Fisher accounting for half of them — and went ahead for the first time on Ryan Longwell's 27- yard field goal that made it 16-14. On a cold, windy day at Lambeau Field, the Packers improved to 33-0 at home when the temperature is 34 or below. The Bears (3-9) also lost their starting running back, Anthony Thomas, who broke his right index finger.

December 8 : Green Bay Packers (10-3) 26, Minnesota Vikings (3-10) 22
(Green Bay) - Tony Fisher's 14-yard touchdown run with 1:06 left gave the Packers their first lead of the game and a 26-22 victory over the Vikings. Darren Sharper picked off Daunte Culpepper's desperation pass as time expired and returned the ball 66 yards before finally going down at the Minnesota 16. The bad blood between the border rivals boiled over at that point as Vikings tight end Jim Kleinsasser gave a two- handed shove to Packers safety Marques Anderson near the Minnesota bench.

December 15 : Green Bay Packers (11-3) 20, San Francisco 49ers (9-5) 14
(San Francisco) - Brett Favre passed for 201 yards in a steady downpour, and the Green Bay defense stopped one last rain-soaked drive at its own 11 with 22 seconds left as the Packers beat the 49ers 20-14 on Sunday. Ahman Green ran for 90 yards and a touchdown, and Donald Driver caught a TD pass as the Packers shrugged off the pelting rain and swirling wind of Candlestick Park to score 17 points in the second half while holding San Francisco scoreless in the fourth quarter. Both teams already clinched their divisions and playoff berths with victories in recent weeks.

December 22 : Green Bay Packers (12-3) 10, Buffalo Bills (7-8) 0
(Green Bay) - Vonnie Holliday's best day as a pro came after the worst night of his life. Holliday set a team record by sacking Drew Bledsoe five times, forcing him to fumble on three of them, in Green Bay'swin. Thanks to Holliday, the Packers are the league's only team to win all its home games this season. His exceptional performance came less than 24 hours after his 16-year- old cousin died of a congenital heart defect. Holliday's first forced fumble led to Green Bay's only touchdown, and his last one ended Buffalo's hopes with 1:13 left and the Bills at the Green Bay 17. He collapsed on the field, then again on the sideline, crying. Holliday, plagued by a torn chest muscle and a sprained knee this season, had just one sack coming into the game. He took off a restrictive shoulder harness last week against doctors' orders and had a solid game against San Francisco. But nothing like Sunday, when he broke Bryce Paup's club record of 4 1/2 sacks set on Sept. 15, 1991, against Tampa Bay. The Packers need to win at the Jets next week and also for the Eagles or Tampa Bay to slip up to get anything more than a first-round playoff game at Lambeau Field, where they've never lost in the postseason. Green Bay lost its best defender in safety Darren Sharper, who sprained his right knee on his league-leading seventh interception return in the first half. Sharper took helmet in his knee and will be re-examined today.

December 29 : New York Jets (9-7) 42, Green Bay Packers (12-4) 17
(New York) - Had the Jets' fans broken into chants of "P-A-T-S," it wouldn't have been a shock. In this wackiest of NFL seasons, the defending Super Bowl champions gave the Jets hope for the playoffs, and Chad Pennington made it reality. New England had beaten Miami in overtime, and then it was the J-E-T-S' turn. Behind Pennington's four touchdown passes, they routed Green Bay 42-17 to win the AFC East. What Curtis Martin called a sinking ship two months ago is sailing into the NFL playoffs. Not only did the Jets surge back from a 1-4 start, they knocked both their saviors, the Patriots, and the Dolphins from contention. New York (9-7) hosts Indianapolis next weekend. The Packers (12-4) blew a chance for home-field advantage throughout the NFC playoffs; the Eagles own that. They awaited the outcome of Tampa Bay's game at the Chicago Bears later Sunday night before knowing their playoff seeding. Pennington had touchdown passes of 18 and 12 yards to Wayne Chrebet, who has gone from goat after a late fumble in a loss to Chicago to the hero. He has a career-high nine TDs this season.  Pennington also had a 1-yarder to Richie Anderson and a 13-yarder to Santana Moss. Martin ran for a 5-yard score, as well. Whenever threatened by Green Bay, the spunky Jets responded. The Packers finished the first half with a touchdown drive that was vintage Favre, but the Jets moved 60 yards in six plays with the second-half kickoff, ending with Martin's touchdown run. LaMont Jordan added a late 3-yard touchdown run Martin finished with 83 yards Sunday and 1,094 for the year, his eighth straight over 1,000. Pennington, the AFC's most efficient passer, had a 134.7 rating for the game as the Jets beat Green Bay for the sixth straight time.  Green Bay's secondary struggled without injured Pro Bowl safety Darren Sharper.

Atlanta Falcons (9-6-1) 27, Green Bay Packers (12-4) 7
(Green Bay) - It looked so perfect for Green Bay. Snow falling. Packers in green and gold. Lambeau Field in January. Only it wasn't Brett Favre making all the plays. It was Michael Vick. Undaunted by the storied stadium where his own coach lost in the "Ice Bowl" 35 years ago, Vick made history of his own. The 22-year-old improvisational genius led the Atlanta Falcons to a shocking 27-7 upset of the Packers in a wild-card playoff before a record crowd of 65,358 stunned souls. The Packers were the only team to go unbeaten at home during the regular season. And they had never lost a home playoff game since the NFL instituted a postseason in 1933 in going 13-0 -- 11 of the victories coming at Lambeau and two more in Milwaukee. The closest they had come was on New Year's Eve 1967, when Bart Starr knifed into the end zone with 13 seconds left to give Green Bay a 21-17 victory over Dallas in the coldest game in NFL history. Falcons coach Dan Reeves threw a 50-yard touchdown pass on a halfback option that gave the Cowboys a 17-14 fourth-quarter lead in that game. Favre had built a reputation as the game's greatest cold-weather quarterback, winning all 35 of his starts at home in which the temperature was 34 or below. It was an unseasonably warm 31 degrees at kickoff. But by the time
2002 IN REVIEW - The Packers came flying out of the gates winning eight of their first nine games as they had the newly established NFC Northern Division clinched by midseason with their other three divisi0n opponents on the way to losing ten or more. Once again Brett Favre would be the driving force passing for 3,658 yards while starting every game for the 11th straight season. After stumbling at the end of November with road losses to the Minnesota Vikings and Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the Packers appeared to be on the verge of securing home field advantage needing just a win over the New York Jets in the final game of the season. However, the Jets would trounce the Packers 42-17, as the Packers who finished with a 12-4 record not only lost home field, but also their first round bye in the playoffs. In the playoffs, the Packers who had a perfect regular season record at Lambeau Field were stunned in the snow by the Atlanta Falcons 27-7, in what was their first home playoff loss in franchise history.

PRE-SEASON - August 10: Philadelphia 20, Green Bay (0-1) 13
(PHILADELPHIA) - Brett Favre outplayed Donovan McNabb, but Philadelphia's Tim Hasselbeck was the best of the backups. Hasselbeck was 4-for-5 for 57 yards and one touchdown, leading the Eagles over the Packers on Saturday night. Rod Smart, who wore "He Hate Me" on the back of his jersey in the defunct XFL, caught a 31-yard TD pass and Pro Bowl kicker David Akers picked up where he left off, converting both of his field-goal attempts. Favre, a three-time NFL MVP, and McNabb, a two-time Pro Bowler, each played three series. Favre led the Packers on one touchdown drive, finishing 6-for-10 for 52 yards and one interception. He was back to his old form after throwing six interceptions, three returned for TDs, in a playoff loss to St. Louis seven months ago. McNabb, who was 52 yards away from leading the Eagles to victory over the Rams in the NFC championship game before throwing an interception, was 5-for-5 for only 15 yards. His only touchdown drive was against Green Bay's second-team defense. Dorsey Levens, cut by the Packers in the offseason, had 64 yards on eight carries in his only series. His 7-yard TD run tied it at 7 midway through the second quarter.

PRE-SEASON - August 17: Green Bay (1-1) 29, Arizona 21
(ARIZONA) - Vonnie Holliday and Green Bay's defense turned up the heat on a sweltering Saturday night as the Packers beat Arizona. The temperature at kickoff for Arizona's first home game of the preseason was 105 degrees, the fifth-hottest game in the Cardinals' 15 years in the desert. Arizona wants to have a big-play attack this season, but the first unit's lone touchdown came after a Packers turnover deep in Green Bay territory. The Packers scored the next 29 points. Holliday had one sack and recovered a fumble for the Packers, and Brett Favre played nearly the entire first half, completing 9 of 17 passes for 125 yards and a touchdown. Donald Driver, starting because of injuries to Terry Glenn and Robert Ferguson, caught five passes for 73 yards, including a 21-yard touchdown.  Fourth-string quarterback Preston Parsons rallied the Cardinals to two fourth-quarter touchdowns against the Green Bay reserves. He connected with fellow rookie Jason McAddley on a 74-yard touchdown play. Rookie Damien Anderson's 1-yard run cut the lead to 29-21 with a minute to go.  The Packers sacked Arizona quarterbacks seven times.

PRE-SEASON - August 26: Green Bay (2-1) 27, Cleveland 20
(GREEN BAY) - Renovations at Lambeau Field are 70 percent complete, and the Green Bay Packers' own makeover remains very much a work in progress. Despite beating the Browns, the Packers culminated a week of sloppy practices with an ugly performance by their starters. Plus, Terry Glenn failed to make his much-anticipated Packers debut in the first game at the "new" Lambeau Field, which is halfway through a two-year, $295 million refurbishing. The Browns returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown and took a 14-0 lead by the time Brett Favre had taken his fourth snap. Last week, Sherman was so disgusted with sloppy practices that he forced his players to return for a full-pads workout. Browns quarterback Tim Couch took advantage of the Packers' missing starting cornerbacks and perfectly executed screens to complete 14 of 18 passes for 112 yards and a touchdown before leaving with a mild strain of his right elbow. X-rays were negative, but Couch will undergo an MRI in Cleveland. All three phases of Green Bay's game gave Sherman fits early on until Cletidus Hunt blocked a field-goal attempt by Phil Dawson and Darren Sharper scooped it up and ran the final 35 yards for a touchdown 19 seconds before halftime that brought the Packers to 14-10. Until then, the record crowd of 62,668 hadn't had much to cheer. The Packers had only three first downs in the first half.

(GREEN BAY) - Third-string quarterback Craig Nall solidified a roster spot by leading the Packers on three second-half scoring drives in a 21-20 victory over the Titans. Billy Volek threw a 13-yard touchdown pass to Eddie Berlin with eight seconds left in the game to pull the Titans to within a point, but the 2-point conversion failed when the ball went off the hands of Berlin wide open in the end zone.  Nall completed 12 of 19 passes for 182 yards. Nall led the Packers on scoring drives of 73, 46 and 82 yards after rookie John Simon returned the second-half kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown that gave Tennessee a 7-3 lead. Tennessee tied it at 14 when running back Robert Holcombe took a short dump-off pass from Volek and rumbled 25 yards to the 1, where he fumbled into the end zone. The ball was recovered by wideout Justin McCareins for a 14-all tie with 12:19 left. Nall hit Lee from 25 yards out after another fumble by Holcombe.

snow began falling at halftime, the Falcons had an astonishing 24-0 lead. Favre was without Pro Bowl running back Ahman Green (knee) and leading receivers Donald Driver (shoulder) and Terry Glenn (concussion) in a futile second-half comeback attempt. He finished 20-of-42 for 247 yards. Vick was 13-of-25 for 117 and rushed 10 times for 64 yards, numerous times turning sure sacks into big plays.

FAREWELL TO THE NFC NORTH
2002 marked the debut of the NFC North Division, which was the NFC Central minus the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. When the AFL and NFL merged in 1970, there were five different alignments under consideration for the Central.
Plan 1  - Chicago, Green Bay, Detroit, New Orleans
Plan 2 - Dallas, St. Louis Cardinals, New Orleans , Atlanta
Plan 3 - Chicago, Detroit, Green Bay, Minnesota
Plan 4 - Chicago, Green Bay, Detroit , Atlanta
Plan 5 - Chicago, Green Bay, Dallas, St. Louis Cardinals
In Plan 2, Green Bay would have been in the West with San Francisco, Los Angeles, Chicago and Detroit (Minnesota would have been in the East), in what was geographically the most convoluted alignment. Of course, Plan 3 was selected, and Tampa Bay joined the foursome in 1977 after spending one year in the AFC West.
