September 12 : Green Bay Packers (1-0) 28, Oakland Raiders (0-1) 24
(GREEN BAY) - Brett Favre led the Packers on an 11-play, 82-yard touchdown drive in the final 1:51 as the Packers stunned the Oakland Raiders 28-24 to make Ray Rhodes a winner in his Packers debut. The three-time league MVP engineered the 11th fourth-quarter comeback of his career, capped by a 1-yard TD toss to Jeff Thomason with 11 seconds left. Favre, who also had three passes intercepted, was 28- 28-of-47 for 333 yards and four touchdowns. His late-game heroics prevented the Packers' second loss in the last 32 games at Lambeau Field. Green Bay also kept a fourth-quarter scoring drive alive by using instant replay to reverse a call. It was a winning debut for Rhodes, who took over after Mike Holmgren left for Seattle after last season. Holmgren led the Packers to two Super Bowls, including a championship in 1997.

September 19 : Detroit Lions (2-0) 23, Green Bay Packers (1-1) 15
(DETROIT) - Brett Favre ran out of miracles. A 91-yard kickoff return by Terry Fair and the heady play of Charlie Batch brought Detroit back for a 23-15 win over the Packers, keeping the surprising Lions unbeaten. It was the sixth loss in the last seven trips to the Silverdome for the Packers, who bolted ahead 15-14 with 12:55 left in the fourth quarter. But the Lions came up with some fireworks of their own to stay undefeated despite playing without All-Pro Barry Sanders, who retired in frustration over the Lions' 5-11 finish in 1998. Fair returned the kickoff to the 8, and three plays later, Batch made a nice fake and took it in on a bootleg to put Detroit back in front, 20-15, with 10:57 remaining. Jason Hanson's 48-yard field goal, capping a 63- yard, 10-play drive, made it 23-15 with 2:46 left. That seemed like plenty of time for Favre, who brought the Packers back in the final 1:51 for a victory over Oakland in their opener. Favre alternated runs by Dorsey Levens with passes of 22, 13 and 8 yards to drive the Packers to Detroit's 27. But on fourth-and-2, his pass intended for Antonio Freeman was swatted away by Robert Bailey, and the Lions killed the final 1:02.

September 26 : Green Bay Packers (2-1) 23, Minnesota Vikings (1-2) 20
(GREEN BAY) - Brett Favre says he can't do this every week. Maybe just every other week. Favre led the Packers to another comeback win, hitting Corey Bradford with a 23-yard touchdown pass with 12 seconds left, giving the Packers a 23-20 victory over the Minnesota Vikings. Bradford's catch capped a 77-yard, 104- second drive led by Favre, who beat the Oakland Raiders in Week 1 with a similar last-ditch drive. It was Favre's 12th fourth-quarter comeback, and the 15th game-winning drive of his career. Favre was 6-of-7 on the final drive, hitting Bradford twice and Dorsey Levens three times as the Packers scored their only offensive touchdown of the game against Minnesota's fired-up defense. Randy Moss caught a 10-yard touchdown pass - just his second reception of the game from Randall Cunningham with 1:56 to play, giving Minnesota a 20-16 lead. Both teams struggled to mount sustained offensive drives until the game's fabulous finish. Minnesota took one last shot at the end zone, but rookie defensive back Antuan Edwards made his second interception of the game as time ran out. Favre, who wept after the Oakland win, collapsed onto a sideline bench shortly after throwing the final pass and was helped off the field by medical staff.

October 10 : Green Bay Packers (3-1) 26, Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2-2) 23
(GREEN BAY) - Brett Favre gave himself quite a birthday present. Favre, who turned 30 on Sunday, led Green Bay on a last-minute, game- winning drive for the third time this season, hitting Antonio Freeman with a 21-yard touchdown pass with 1:05 left as the Packers beat the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 26-23. The winning pass capped a six-play, 73-yard drive Favre directed in 40 seconds against the Buccaneers' top-ranked defense. The Packers racked up 452 yards of total offense against Tampa Bay but looked to be in trouble when Mike Alstott's 22-yard touchdown run with 1:45 to play put the Bucs up 23-19.

October 17 : Denver Broncos (2-4) 31, Green Bay Packers (3-2) 10
(DENVER) - Brian Griese threw two touchdown passes to Ed McCaffrey and ran for a third as the Broncos finished with a huge edge in total offense (514-133) and time of possession (45:14-14:46). Olandis Gary, elevated to a starting role because of injuries to Terrell Davis and Derek Loville, carried 37 times for 124 yards and a score, and the Broncos intercepted Brett Favre three times. Favre, who three times this season rallied his team to a comeback victory in the final two minutes despite a sore thumb on his throwing hand, was only 7-for-23 for 120 yards in, statistically, his worst performance as a pro. "I didn't expect to play like this," said Favre, the three-time league MVP. "I didn't expect to lose like this. Games like this happen It was ugly. This is a character check. My thumb has been bothering me all year, but it is not an excuse."

(SAN DIEGO) - Brett Favre rebounded from his worst pro game with three TD passes, and Green Bay had six interceptions against the Chargers. Favre, 7-pf 23 for 120 yards with three interceptions in last week's loss at Denver, was 12-of-22 for 173 yards with one interception.

November 1 : Seattle Seahawks (5-2) 27, Green Bay Packers (4-3) 7
(GREEN BAY) - During his seven years in Green Bay, Mike Holmgren helped make Brett Favre a superstar. In Holmgren's first trip back, his Seattle defense made Favre took less than ordinary. Led by Cortez Kennedy and Shawn Springs, Holmgren's Seahawks forced seven turnovers, six by Favre, as they beat the Packers, 27-7, Monday night. Jon Kitna chipped in with touchdown passes to Derrick Mayes and Shawn Dawkins, Ricky Watters ran for 125 yards in 30 carries, and Springs returned a blocked punt 61 yards for a touchdown. Green Bay, which lost for only the second time in 35 games at Lambeau Field, also contributed to its own demise with 10 penalties for 103 yards. That included two personal fouls on one play against offensive tackle Earl Dotson, who was so frustrated trying to block Kennedy that he got thrown out of the game for shoving him twice. But the defense did the real work for Seattle, which has won five of its last six and moved into a tie with Kansas City for the lead in the AFC West. Favre had an abysmal game. He finished 14-of-35 for l80 yards and threw four interceptions for just the second time in his career.

(GREEN BAY) - Brett Favre drove the Packers 73 yards in the last 3:19, but Ryan Longwell's 27-yard field goal attempt was blocked by Bryan Robinson as time expired. The Bears snapped a three-game losing streak despite losing starting quarterback Cade McNown with a sprained right knee after the second series of the game. The Packers lost for the third time in four games, including consecutive home defeats for the first time since 1991.

GAME 9 - November 14 : Dallas Cowboys (5-4) 27, Green Bay Packers (4-5) 13
(DALLAS) - Maybe losing superstars Troy Aikman, Emmitt Smith and Michael Irvin was the jolt the Dallas Cowboys needed. Backup quarterback Jason Garrett snowed the poise and accuracy of Aikman, and safety George Teague helped the defense withstand a typical late game charge by Brett Favre to give Dallas a 27-13 victory over Green Bay. Playing without their Big Three for the first time in a decade, the Cowboys ended a two-game losing streak and leaped from third in the NFC East to a first-place tie with Washington and the New York Giants, both losers Sunday. The Packers lost their third straight and fourth in five games to fall below .500 in the second half of a season for the first time since 1994. This was their eighth straight loss at Texas Stadium. Dallas, which had blown leads of 17, 14 and 10 points in losing three of its last four games, looked to be on its
way to another one despite having led 20-3 with 10 minutes, 40 seconds left. Favre shook off three quarters of missed opportunities — both by him and his receivers — to throw a 26-yard touchdown pass to Antonio Freeman with 6:53 to go, then set up Ryan Longwell's 31-yard field goal with 1:21 to play to close Green Bay to 20-13. The Packers recovered the onside kick and moved to the Dallas 25 with 21 seconds left before Teague intercepted a pass on the sideline and coasted 95 yards for a touchdown.

November 21 : Green Bay Packers (5-5) 26, Detroit Lions (6-4) 17
(GREEN BAY) - After watching a taunting Lions secondary beat him earlier, Brett Favre returned the treatment with two gleeful throat-slitting gestures while the Packers pulled away from the Lions. Favre, who was 26-of-40 for 309 yards and no interceptions, twice taunted Lions CB Robert Bailey, who had done the same, in Detroit's victory in September. The second gesture earned Favre an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty and a possible fine from coach Ray Rhodes. Favre said he'd be happy to pay the fine. Dorsey Levens had 146 total yards, Ryan Longwell kicked four field goals and the Green Bay defense shut out the Lions in the second half. The victory snapped the Packers' three-game losing streak and two-game home losing streak.

November 29 : Green Bay Packers (6-5) 20, San Francisco 49ers (3-8) 3
(SAN FRANCISCO) - The Packers revived their season while extending the 49ers' losing spiral. Brett Favre threw touchdown passes of 13 yards to Corey Bradford and 10 yards to Tyrone Davis as Green Bay defeated the 49ers 20-3 Monday night and pulled within a game of the NFC Central lead. Ryan Longwell added two short field goals for the Packers, who have rebounded with two consecutive wins after dropping three straight. For the 49ers, it was their seventh straight loss. They have one offensive touchdown in the last five games, and have clinched their first non-winning season since 1982. Things have gotten so bad for San Francisco that it has come to this: Steve Stenstrom went back to pass in the second quarter and dropped the ball without being hit. Favre, who made his 120th straight start to extend his NFL record for consecutive starts by a quarterback, went 25-of-36 for 246 yards. He has had two straight solid games after struggling with a thumb injury for much of the season.

December 5 : Green Bay Packers (7-5) 35, Chicago Bears (5-8) 19
(CHICAGO) - Rookie De'Mond Parker ran for two fourth-quarter touchdowns and Keith McKenzie returned a fumble on a botched punt 45 yards for another score as Green Bay won its third straight at cold, rainy Soldier Field. Parker gained 113 yards on 19 carries to help the Packers overcome the absence of leading receiver and rusher Dorsey Levens, out with cracked ribs. Brett Favre was 17-of-24 for 155 yards to become just the second quarterback to surpass 3,000 yards passing in eight straight seasons. Dan Marino once did it nine straight.

December 12 : Carolina Panthers (6-7) 33, Green Bay Packers (7-6) 31
(GREEN BAY) - Steve Beuerlein completed a magnificent day by rushing for a 5-yard touchdown as time expired, giving the Carolina Panthers a 33-31 victory over the Green Bay Packers. Beuerlein, who was 29-of-43, picked apart the Packers' confused pass defense for 373 yards and three touchdowns. He also led the Panthers on a 63-yard drive in the final 3:52 for the winning score. A 5-yard quarterback draw by Beuerlein, one of football's least mobile quarterbacks, was the final improbability in Carolina's emotional win at one of football's toughest venues. Green Bay had its three-game winning streak snapped and took a severe blow to its playoff hopes.

December 20 : Minnesota Vikings (8-6) 24, Green Bay Packers (7-7) 20
(MINNESOTA) - Cris Carter kept his starting streak alive, but his services weren't needed. Randy Moss was all over the field Monday night. Moss caught five passes for 131 yards and two touchdowns as the Vikings outlasted the Packers. Moss also atoned for his fumbled punt that led to a Green Bay touchdown by hauling in a 36-yard pass from Jeff George that set up Leroy Hoard's 1-yard run for the winning score with nine minutes left. The Vikings snapped a two-game skid and moved within a game of NFC Central leader Tampa Bay. The Packers fell to 7-7, tied with the New York Giants, Dallas and Carolina in the wildcard logjam. The Packers had one last chance, driving to the Minnesota 27, before Brett Favre was intercepted by Robert Griffith in the end zone on the final play. George's two touchdown tosses to Moss and the longest scramble of his 10-year career staked the Vikings to a 17-13 lead after three quarters. But rookie Basil Mitchell, who forced two fumbles that led to 10 points, jarred the ball loose from Moss on a punt return and Tod McBride recovered for Green Bay at the Vikings' 37. The Vikings appeared to stop the Packers at the 9, and Ryan Longwell came in for his third chip-shot field goal. But holder Matt Hasselbeck, Favre's backup, threw a touchdown strike to tight end Jeff Thomason for a 20-17 lead with 12:31 remaining. Carter extended his starting streak to 111 games despite a severely sprained right ankle that had him in a cast all week But he was no factor, playing just a few snaps in the first quarter and not getting any balls thrown his way. The Packers led 13-10 at haiftime on the strength of Dorsey Levens' 1-yard run and two Longwell field goals. Levens returned to the lineup after missing two games with a cracked rib and gained 99 yards on 26 carries. But the Vikings converted three third downs on their way to the go-ahead touchdown in the third quarter, including a 17-yard scramble by George to the Green Bay 42, George's longest run ever.

December 26 : Tampa Bay Buccaneers (10-5) 29, Green Bay Packers (7-8) 10
(GREEN BAY) - After a 45-0 loss at Oakland, the worst in franchise history, anything would have looked good. A postseason berth was particularly pretty as the Bucs closed in on their first division title in 18 years. They equaled a club record for regular-season victories and can take the NFC Central title by winning at Chicago next week. "It's a sign of a good team to be able to bounce back after the debacle last week," Bucs defensive tackle Brad Culpepper said. Tampa Bay forced four turnovers and handed the Packers their third straight defeat.

January 2, 2000 : Green Bay Packers (8-8) 49, Arizona Cardinals (6-10) 24
(GREEN BAY) - The Pack can pack for the off-season. Green Bay's six-year run in the NFL playoffs ended Sunday, even though the Packers won their regular-season finale with their highest scoring output in 16 years. Dallas' 26-18 victory over the Giants gave the Cowboys the NFC's final wild card spot, even though they, like the Packers, finished 8-8. Dallas beat Green Bay head-to-head this season. "A lot of what ifs," Green Bay quarterback Brett Favre said after the Packers defeated the Arizona Cardinals 49-24 Sunday — their most points since scoring 55 against Tampa Bay in 1983 — behind four Dorsey Levens touchdown runs.

RAY RHODES FIRED (January 2, 2000) - One year of mediocrity was one too many for Ron Wolf. The Green Bay Packers' autocratic general manager fired first-year coach Ray Rhodes and his entire staff just hours after the Packers missed the playoffs for the first time in seven years, a source close to the team told the Associated Press late Sunday night. The source, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the Packers will announce the firings at a news conference today. The move comes almost exactly one year after Wolf signed Rhodes to a four-year, $4 million contract to replace Mike Holmgren. Less than a month ago, Wolf dismissed as "ludicrous" the idea that he would fire Rhodes after his first season. The Packers (8-8) thrashed the Arizona Cardinals 49-24 Sunday in their regular-season finale, but the Cowboys' 26-18 victory over the New York Giants put Dallas (8-8) into the NFC's final playoff spot. Green Bay hadn't missed the playoffs since 1992, Holmgren's first year with the team. Rhodes endured intense fan and media scrutiny, as the Packers struggled to their worst season since 1992.
MIKE SHERMAN HIRED (January 18, 2000) - Mike Sherman is Ron Wolf’s surprising choice to take the Green Bay Packers back to the top of the NFL. Sherman, the Seattle Seahawks’ offensive coordinator and a former Green Bay assistant, was hired Tuesday as coach of the Packers. Sherman is a longtime college assistant coach with just three years of NFL experience, two as Mike Holmgren’s tight ends coach in Green Bay. He gained a reputation as a detail- oriented disciplinarian, much like Holmgren himself. “Mike’s qualifications are outstanding,” Wolf said. “He has the experience, dedication, determination and discipline. He understands football.” Wolf fired Ray Rhodes and his staff on Jan. 3 after an 8-8 season, Rhodes’ first in Green Bay. The Packers missed the playoffs under Rhodes for the first time since 1992, the first of Holmgren’s seven years in Green Bay. Sherman was one of eight assistant coaches Holmgren took with him from Green Bay to Seattle last year, but Wolf decided to bring him back to Wisconsin after the pool of coaching candidates began to dry up. “I realize this is a huge undertaking and responsibility I’m undertaking. But I’m ready and excited,” Sherman said. “Will I make mistakes? Yes, I will make mistakes. Will my players make mistakes? Yep. But we will correct the mistakes we make, move forward and hopefully win a bunch of football games.” Wolf’s early favorites — former Chiefs coach Marty Schottenheimer and Rams offensive coordinator Mike Martz — took themselves out of the running. The Packers broke off talks with Schottenheimer over the weekend, apparently because Schottenheimer’s salary demands would have been more than Wolf was willing to pay. The Packers owe Rhodes and his staff at least $2 million next season. Martz signed a two-year extension with the Rams on Monday and removed himself from consideration for any new jobs. Unlike Schottenheimer or Martz, the Packers will not need to offer Sherman’s former team compensation for his services.
SEASON REVIEW - With Ray Rhodes now holding the coaching reigns, the Packers got off to a 3-1 start winning all three games in the final minute. After losing four of their next five as Brett Favre played through a sprained thumb, the Packers looked to have the playoffs sewn up. However, three straight losses would drop them out of the playoffs, as they won their last game of the season to finish 8-8. Saying that the Packers lacked the toughness and fire he desired, GM Ron Wolf relieved Rhodes on his head coaching duties the evening of the team's final game, also firing all of the assistant coaches.

(NEW ORLEANS) - Green Bay scored three second-half touchdowns, including two TD passes by backup quarterback Matt Hasselbeck. Brett Favre, who left last week's game early last week because of a bruised thumb, was 11-of-19 for 162 yards and two TDs for the Packers. New Orleans quarterback Billy Joe Hobert, who spent last season on injured reserve after rupturing his Achilles' tendon in the first game of the year, suffered a cracked rib in the first quarter.

September 2: Green Bay (4-0) 25, Miami 17
(GREEN BAY) - Undrafted rookie Basil Mitchell caught two second-half touchdown passes and Green Bay used instant replay to negate a touchdown on a kickoff return by Miami. Again relying on a superior cast of reserves, the Packers overcame an 11-0 deficit. Backup quarterback Matt Hasselbeck threw two touchdown passes for the Packers, giving him nine for the preseason. Instant replay played a part in tonight's game as Dolphin kick returner Kio Sanford ran back the ensuing kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown, only to have the score overturned when the Green Bay coaching staff noticed Sanford's foot stepping on the sideline as he raced by them. The Dolphins lost several players to injury. Miami's more seriously wounded players include safety Calvin Jackson (twisted knee); safety Brock Marion (ligament damage in hand); cornerback Patrick Surtain (groin strain); quarterback Damon Huard (bruised right quadriceps); safety Shawn Wooden (broken right thumb); and enigmatic rookie defensive lineman Dimitrius Underwood (dislocated shoulder)

August 14: Green Bay (1-0) 27, New York Jets 16
(GREEN BAY) - Jets coach Bill Parcells suffered just his second exhibition loss in three years with New York. The Packers reserves got the victory, but New York's starters outplayed Green Bay in the first half. The Green Bay offense was inconsistent under Favre and Rick Mirer, while Jets quarterback Vinny Testaverde directed two razor-sharp scoring drives. Testaverde was 11-of-13 for 147 yards, and Keyshawn Johnson caught five passes for 57 yards as the Jets' first-string offense scorched the Packers' defensive backs. Dorsey Levens, who held put and didn't play in any exhibition games last year, rushed for 40 yards on Green Bay's opening play from scrimmage. Favre then hit Derrick Mayes for a 13-yard touchdown.

(MADISON) - Backup Matt Hasselbeck threw three touchdown passes in the first half as the Packers beat the Broncos Monday at rain-soaked Camp Randall Stadium. Before a sellout crowd, the Packers scored 24 first-half points against the Broncos, who struggled for the first time this year after two easy preseason wins. A steady rain fell until moments before game time, soaking into the artificial turf. The conditions resulted in numerous slips by both teams, but Hasselbeck and the Packers moved the ball easily, scoring 17 points on their first three possessions and putting the game away early. Brett Favre started at quarterback for the Packers but left after eight plays when he was knocked to the ground by John Mobley and landed awkwardly on his right hand. Favre stayed on the sideline for the first half but watched the second half from the locker room. The Packers said no X-rays were taken of Favre's hand and the injury wasn't serious. Hasselbeck spent last year on the Packers' practice squad but got the backup job when Rick Mirer was traded last Friday to the New York Jets.

RAY RHODES - WHAT WENT WRONG?
Ray Rhodes and Scooter McLean remain the only two men to spend one season as head coach of the Green Bay Packers. McLean's tenure was a 1-10-1 disaster, despite the fact he had a roster filled with future stars. Rhodes found himself with an 8-8 team that was a Super Bowl participant two years earlier. He was fired one year after signing a four-year, $4 million contract to replace Mike Holmgren. So what went wrong in Green Bay?
With less than a month to go in the season, Packer GM Ron Wolf dismissed as "ludicrous" the idea that he would fire Rhodes. Yet, Wolf fired Rhodes just hours after Green Bay missed the playoffs for the first time in seven years. "This decision was extremely difficult because of the respect and admiration I have for all the coaches and families involved," general manager Ron Wolf said today. "For whatever reason, our players did not respond to this program. We will begin our search for a new coach at once."
Wolf sounded like a man who had hired a coach who did not deliver what he promised or projected. "Is he a different coach than I thought he was?" he said of Rhodes. "Yes, the answer to that is yes. What I think we have to have here is a well disciplined, tough, hard-nosed football team. That's the way you're successful in this business. We have to develop that. We don't have that here." When asked what Rhodes' response to his dismissal was, Wolf said: "I don't think he's very pleased with it, but I think he understood. We had a long and involved conversation last night."
The Packers started out 4-2, but two three-game losing streaks sent the season down in flames. As the streaks occurred, grumblings began that Rhodes didn't assert enough control over his players. It was an ironic twist for the players, who quietly criticized Holmgren for being too dictatorial when he left Green Bay a year ago. Even Brett Favre sounded a bit like a player who did not completely understand where the wheels fell off.
"This is a total surprise," Favre told the Green Bay Press-Gazette after the firing. "I thought he was a real good coach. Guys related to him well because he was a former player. I think what happened, to a certain degree, guys took advantage. And Ray, he wanted to trust in guys."
Packer president Bob Harlan, in his autobiography, explained, to the best account we have found so far, the final steps in the end of the Rhodes era: He (Wolf) pretty much stuck with Ray until we got into December, and then his whole attitude changed. The college football season had ended, giving Ron time to go down to the practice field where he could watch the team during the week. After we lost back-to-back games to Carolina and Minnesota, alarm had really set in with him, and he told me, "I think we're going to make a change, but let's see where we are."
I asked him what had changed his mind, and he said, "He's a different coach than I thought he was." He told me that things looked good when he watched the team during training camp, but there was a different pulse on the practice field now and it was being reflected in our play. "These players aren't having any fun," he said. "There's no drive down there. Ray has lost the team."
