(MILWAUKEE) - The Rams doubleteamed Sterling Sharpe and they still couldn't stop the Packers' record-setting receiver in Sunday's season opener. Sharpe caught a 50-yard touchdown pass when two Rams' defenders, leaping in front of him, tipped the ball into the end zone. And when Sharpe wasn't open, he had seven catches for 120 yards, TE Jackie Harris was, as Green Bay routed the Rams. Harris caught five passes for 92 yards. "A lot of times Jackie was our second guy," Brett Favre said. "He was open ... and I got the ball to him. You can see after the catch he can make some big plays." But no play was bigger than the one Sharpe made in the first quarter. It set the tone for the game and gave the Packers a 9-3 lead. As Favre scrambled and heaved the ball toward the end zone, Sharpe got behind leaping defenders Pat Terrell and Todd Lyght and held onto the ball after both Rams tipped it into the end zone. "I knew Sterling was deep and I tried to throw it up as hard as I could," Favre said. Sharpe, who caught an NFL-record 108 passes last season, wasn't around to describe his catch because he won't talk to the media. Both Terrell and Lyght said it was a play they both should make. The Packers scored on their final possession of the first half and first two of the third quarter, and their defense stifled the Rams before a crowd of 54,648. Favre, who completed 19-of-29 for 264 yards, directed a 76-yard drive in 10 plays' as the Packers beat the clock ending the first half and took a 19-6 lead. Starting with 3:37 left, Favre hit passes of 26 and 21 yards to Harris, then flipped a 4-yard touchdown pass to Mark Clayton with 40 seconds remaining. Edgar Bennett's 11-yard run capped a 66-yard, third-quarter drive, highlighted by a 26-yard Favre-to-Sharpe pass, as Green Bay took a 26-6 lead. On the next series, Favre hit passes of 16 and 14 yards to Harris, and after Lyght interfered with Sharpe in the end zone, Bennett rammed in from the 1.

Roger Ruzek kicked a 30 yard field goal with 5 seconds to go as the Eagles, Reggie's old team, rallied with 13 fourth quarter points to beat Reggie's new team. Randall Cunningham, twice stripped of the ball by White in the first half, eluded his former teammate on a rollout and heaved a 40-yard touchdown pass to Victor Bailey to tie the score 17-17 with 4:14 left. The Eagles got the ball back on the Green Bay 45 with 3:15 remaining after the Packers managed only 3 yards on three plays. On third-and-10 from the 50, the Packers blew their coverage, and Jim McMahon, who had rolled right to avoid the rush, spotted Guliford all alone at the 11. Guliford went 6 more yards before he was pushed out of bounds by Mike Prior. Reveiz, whose 49-yard attempt hit the crossbar with 2:40 left, then kicked a 22-yarder for the Vikings' fifth victory in their last six games against Green Bay. The five field goals were a career high for Reveiz, who had been bothered by an ankle injury. His other kicks were from 35, 19, 29 and 51 yards. McMahon, signed as a free agent in the offseason, has won his last nine starts against the Packers. Murray, signed two weeks ago, tied a club record with five field goals, including long-distance 48 and 50 yarders, as the defending NFL champions climbed back to .500 with a 36-14 drubbing of the Green Bay Packers. Dallas, which had lost its first two games thanks in part to poor placekickmg by Lin Elliott, evened its record at 2-2 while the Packers, last-second losers in two games, fell to 1-3. Aikman, who was in flawless form, hitting 18 of 23 passes for 317 yards, threw one touchdown pass and Smith, making his first start after his bitter contract dispute with owner Jerry Jones, scored on a 22-yard run and had 71 yards on 13 carries. But it was Murray's day as the 14-year veteran tied the team mark set by Roger Ruzek in 1987 against the Los Angeles Rams with a 5-for-5 performance. Each time a Cowboys' drive fizzled, Murray drilled one right down the middle. His other three field goals went 33 and 19 yards twice. The Cowboys built a 16-7 halftime lead on three Murray field goals and a 61-yard touchdown strike from Aikman to Michael Irvin. Brett Favre completed six consecutive passes on Green Bay's opening drive with a 1-yard run by Edgar Bennett producing the touchdown.

(GREEN BAY) - The Packers built a seemingly safe 30-7 halftime lead before John Elway led the visiting Broncos on another comeback. Reggie White made sure this one fell short. White broke through for back-to-back sacks of Elway in the final 1:50 to stop a Denver drive and the Packers held on for a 30-27 Sunday night victory. Le Lo Lang's interception, the Broncos' third of the second half, at the Green Bay 43 gave Denver one last chance with 2:05 to play, but White brought down Elway for losses of 8 and 14 yards, the final sack with 1:27 to go. Green Bay broke a three-game losing streak. Elway set career highs in pass completions with 33 and pass attempts with 59 and he finished with 367 yards. Vance Johnson caught a career-high 10 passes for 148 yards against the porous Packers defense. The Packers, behind Brett Favre's passing to Sterling Sharpe and Jackie Harris, scored on all six of their first-half possesions - three touchdowns and three field goals - for a 30-7 lead. But the Broncos stopped the Packers time after time in the second half, and the Packers couldn't contain Elway until the end. Mike Croel picked off a screen pass and returned it 22 yards for a score in the third quarter, pulling the Broncos within 30-14. Elway hit four different receivers in a 68-yard drive capped by Rod Bernstein's 2-yard run and it suddenly was 30-21. Elway later launched a 49-yard pass to Johnson to the Green Bay 16. A penalty knocked Denver back, but Jason Elam hit a 47-yard field goal with 14:13 to play.

(TAMPA BAY) - The Green Bay Packers found another way for Sterling Sharpe to attack a defense. Sharpe caught four touchdown passes in a 37 14 victory over the host Tampa Bay Buccaneers and also lined up at quarterback for two plays - running for 5 yards on one and completing the only pass he's thrown during his career on the other. Sharpe, who set a NFL single season record with 108 receptions last year, finished with 10 catches for 147 yards, the 21st 100-yard game of his career and his third against NFC Central rival Tampa Bay. Brett Favre completed 20 of 35 passes for 268 yards for Green Bay, which forced three turnovers and held the Bucs to 65 yards total offense in the opening half. Craig Enckson, benched in the first half with Tampa Bay trailing 14-0, returned late in the third quarter to throw two touchdown passes to Horace Copeland and help the Bucs avoid being shut out for the second consecutive game. Terrell Buckley and LeRoy Butler each had interceptions off Enckson in the opening quarter, and Johnny Holland snatched a Steve DeBerg pass and returned it 30 yards to set up Green Bay's third touchdown. Sharp began that drive at quarterback, lining up in shotgun formation and breaking up the middle for 5 yards on first down. He threw to Mark Clayton for 1 yard on second down before Favre, who had been watching from the sideline, returned. The Green Bay quarterback threw 6 yards to Sharpe on third-and-4, and the Packers continued marching with Sharp gaining 20 yards on a pass from Favre. On second-and-6 from the Tampa Bay 10, Sharpe broke free in the end zone for his third touchdown reception.

(GREEN BAY) - LeRoy Butler's quick hands and Green Bay's harassing defense meant another rough day for Jim Harbaugh and Chicago. The Packers sacked Harbaugh seven times, and Darrell Thompson ran 17 yards for a touchown with 1:54 left to seal Green Bay's victory. Despite the rough treatment, Harbaugh tried to rally the Bears early in the fourth quarter. Trailing 10-3, the Bears moved from their 22-yard-line to the Packers' 12. But blitzing safety Butler hit Harbaugh's arm, forcing a fumble on third down that was kicked around and then recovered by Butler at the Packers' 37. The Bears got the ball back but were forced to punt after a holding penalty and a third-down sack by George Koonce. Reggie White became the all-time sacks leader with 130 1/2, getting two of the Packers' seven traps of Jim Harbaugh. He moved one ahead of Lawrence Taylor.

(KANSA CITY) - With no Joe Montana, the Chiefs needed the defense to provide some offense. So Dan Saleaumua took over where the injured Montana left off. Saleaumua ran 16 yards for a touchdown early in the third with a fumble stripped by Derrick Thomas from Brett Favre to set the Chiefs on a 17-point run that led them over Green Bay on Monday night. Then the 6-foot, 300-pounder forced a fumble by Darrell Thompson that Tracy Rogers recovered in the end zone just as the Packers threatened to go ahead with just under six minutes left. An interception by Martin Bayless, Kansas City's third of the game, ended Green Bay's final threat with 1:40 left. The victory kept the Chiefs in first place and ended a three-game winning streak for the Packers. But it wasn't easy. The Kansas City offense was limited to just 60 yards in the half and could have gone off trailing by more than the 9-3 score by which the Packers led. In fact, the defense produced those points, a 23-yard field goal by Nick Lowery. Green Bay, meanwhile, failed on a first and goal from the 2 when Thomas forced a third down fumble and chose to kick a field goal on fourth down from the Kansas City 1 in the final minute of the half and settled for Chris Jacke's field goals of 23, 51 and 19 yards. Then, on Green Bay's first offensive play after intermission, Thomas broke behind Favre and swiped at the ball, knocking it straight at the feet of Saleaumua. He grabbed it like a shortstop and rambled 16 yards into the end zone to give the Chiefs the lead. It was the Packers' first Monday Night game since 1986.

Jacke's clutch kick came after Morten Andersen hit his only field goal, a 27-yarder with 3:38 to go. Brett Favre, sacked six times and pressured most of the game, then set up Jacke's game-winner with a 54-yard pass to Sterling Sharpe, who gained only 25 yards on his other five receptions. Favre completed 18 of 32 passes for 150 yards and a touchdown. Both defenses played tough and seized opportunities. By the time Johnny Holland latched onto Wade Wilson's pass in the fourth quarter for the Packers' second interception of the game, New Orleans had coughed up the ball four times. Green Bay took advantage of three of them for scores. Wilson completed 20 of 29 passes for two touchdowns, two interceptions and 197 yards.

Jacke hit his fourth field goal of the game, a 34-yarder with 9:03 remaining, as Green Bay, struggling for touchdowns inside the 20 most of the game, took a 19-17 lead. The field goal was set up by a 32-yard pass from Brett Favre to Mark Clayton, who minutes earlier had been involved in the game's most controversial play. First, an ineligible receiver down field was flagged and then so was a taunting call on Clayton, who had spiked Ihe ball. After a five-minute delay while officials tried to sort out the double call, the Packers were assessed both penalties, moving the ball all the way back to the 27. Favre was then sacked on the next play and Jacke, who'd kicked three field goals giving him a club record 17 straight, missed from 53 yards on the final play of the third quarter.

Tampa Bay took a 10-6 lead with 7:33 to go when Craig Erickson hil Courtney Hawkins with a 9-yard louchdown pass, capping a 63-yard drive. But Green Bay moved 75 yards in 15 plays as Favre and Sharpe, who had only three catches to that point, warmed up during the Packers' only sustained drive. Favre hit Ed West with an 11-yard pass on third down and a 28-yarder to Mark Clayton right after a holding penalty. Sharpe, who had 10 catches and four touchdowns against Tampa Bay a month ago in a Green Bay rout, also had receptions of 15 and 7 yards before his touchdown grab. Green Bay got a first down at the 7 after a 9-yard pass to West and 2-yard run by Edgar Bennett. Favre rolled around the end on second down with 1:21 left and look a hard hit to the knee from Barney Bussey. After a timeout, Favre limped to the sidelines and then returned. He rolled out again, this time flipping the ball to Sharpe in the corner for the winning score.

(CHICAGO) - Dante Jones intercepted a pass and lateraled for one touchdown and returned a fumble for another score, leading the Bears past the Packers and creating a three-way tie for the NFC Central lead. Mark Carrier intercepted a pass by Brett Favre and returned it 34 yards with 1:41 left for the third touchdown of the day by the Bears' defense, cutting off Green Bay's hope for a comeback. This was the first time in 30 years that the Bears and Packers have met this late in a season with winning records, and Chicago's victory gave it an 82-59-6 lead in one of the NFL's longest rivalries. The Bears won their fourth straight game and ended a three-game winning string by the Packers. Chicago, Green Bay and Detroit, which lost 13-0 to Minnesota, are tied at 7-5. Favre completed a Packer-record 36 passes for 402 yards in the loss.

Tony Bennett and Johnny Holland stuffed fourth-down attempts by San Diego and Terrell Buckley and Mike Prior intercepted Stan Humphries' passes in the closing minutes to preserve a Sunday night win over the Chargers. With 4:42 to play, Bryce Paup slowed Natrone Means and Holland held the back for no gain on fourth-and-1 at the Green Bay 37. Then the Chargers, who have scored only six touchdowns in seven home games, had the ball at the Green Bay 43 approaching the two-minute warning. Buckley picked off Humphries' pass intended for Nate Lewis and returned it 31 yards to the Chargers' 48. San Diego got the ball back in the closing seconds, but Prior got Green Bay's third interception of the night.

(MILWAUKEE) - The Packers' postseason parade was delayed Sunday by nemesis Jim McMahon, whose passing revived the Vikings' chances of repeating as Central champions. McMahon threw for three touchdowns - matching his season total entering Sunday's game - in leading the Vikings over the Packers. It was his 10th consecutive winning start against Green Bay. The Packers had won six straight at County Stadium, including five under second-year coach Mike Holmgren. But Holmgren left the game with an 0-4 mark against Vikings coach Dennis Green, another former San Francisco assistant. Scottie Graham rushed 30 times for 139 yards - only 35 fewer than he had gained in his entire NFL career - as Minnesota moved into a third-place tie with Chicago. Green Bay, seeking its first playoff berth in a non-strike season since 1972, had the ball at Minnesota's 2-yard line with 2 1/2 minutes left. But the Vikings' NFC- leading defense pushed the Pack back. (GREEN BAY) - The Packers returned to the playoffs for the first time in 11 years with a numbing victory on another icy December afternoon at Lambeau Field. Green Bay shut out the Raiders, a win that coupled with Philadelphia's 37-26 victory over New Orleans earned the Packers their first berth since the strike-shortened 1982 season and first in a non-strike year since 1972. The Packers, now assured of a wild-card berth, can win their first division title since 1972 next Sunday by beating the Lions, who defeated Chicago 20-14 Sunday. The Raiders, who lost QB Jeff Hostetler to a concussion, can still make the playoffs but will need to beat Denver next week to do so. Los Angeles quarterbacks were sacked eight times Sunday. The kickoff temperature was zero, the second coldest in the history of Lambeau Field, and the wind chill was minus 22 degrees, the third coldest in the history of the fabled stadium. Sunday marked the fourth straight year the Packers have had a December home game with wind chills below zero. Players had trouble with the footing and catching the football, and fans, accustomed to the cold, came bundled in orange hunting garb and every combination of winter wear. There were 5,025 no-shows. Green Bay has put together back-to-back winning seasons for the first time since 1966-67 when it won the first two Super Bowls. Green Bay's Sterling Sharpe made some history of his own Sunday, becoming the first NFL receiver to have two 100-catch seasons when he grabbed a 26-yard pass from Brett Favre in the first quarter. Sharpe, who set an NFL record with 108 catches last season, caught seven Sunday, including a 23-yarder from Favre to give the Packers a 14-0 lead in the third quarter. He now has 106 receptions this season. The Lambeau Leap began on this date, with a fumble. Los Angeles Raiders RB Randy Jordan coughed up the ball. (DETROIT) - The Lions, with Erik Kramer and without Barry Sanders, won the NFC Central title for the second time in three years. Kramer threw an 8-yard, fourth-quarter touchdown pass to Rodney Holman and Sanders' replacement - Eric Lynch - had 115 yards and two TDs Sunday in the Lions' win over the Packers. The Lions' reward is they will play host to the Packers next weekend in a first-round playoff game. It was the first time since 1954 that the Lions have been in first place since the start of the season. Kramer completed 15 of 29 passes, while Lynch, the third-string tailback making his second straight start, scored from the 5 and the 1. Jason Hanson added field goals of 37, 53 and 48 yards for the Lions. Sanders has been out with a knee injury. Favre, second in the NFL with 20 interceptions entering the game, completed 23 of 37 for 190 yards, including a 39-yard TD pass to Edgar Bennett. Bennett also had a two-yard TD run and Chris Jacke added field goals of 54 and 47 yards for the Packers. Sterling Sharpe had six receptions for 33 yards, giving the Pro-Bowl receiver 112 catches for the season, breaking his own NFL record of 106 receptions in 1992. The Packers led 20-16 after Jacke's last field goal with 47 seconds left in the third quarter. But Mel Gray returned the kickoff 38 yards to the Packers' 44-yard line. With Kramer hitting on 3 of 4 for 35 yards, the Lions mounted a 44-yard, eight-play drive that ended In Lynch's one-yard TD run. That put the Lions ahead 23-20 with 11:50 left.

Reggie White's 37-day whirlwind tour ended Tuesday when the NFL's most prized free agent chose to play in the league's smallest city with the Green Bay Packers. White, a seven-time All-Pro defensive end with the Philadelphia Eagles, was wooed by the San Francisco 49ers, Washington Redskins, New York Jets, Cleveland Browns and Packers, among others. His contract calls for $17 million over four years, including $9 million in the first year, half in a signing bonus and half in salary, a source said. "There wasn't any place he didn't visit that he didn't like," said Jimmy Sexton, White's agent. White, 31, said his first priority in finding a team was one that would give him a chance to win a Super Bowl before he retires. White's choices included Washington, San Francisco and Dallas, but the 49ers and Super Bowl champion Cowboys had financial limitations, while the Redskins offered $14 million over four years. Washington's concern was the salary cap, which will almost certainly take effect next year. The 49ers were limited by free agent restrictions because they were among the league's final four teams this year. The 49ers had a $19.5 million, five-year deal on the table, but most of the money was at the end of an non-guaranteed contract. "He was afraid that they'd wake up one morning saying, 'We can't afford a 34-year-old defensive lineman making $5 million and cut him.'" Sexton said. "Then we'd have to do all this again." "I felt the dollars offered by Green Bay were just far too much to overcome," 49ers president Carmen Policy said. "Without guaranteeing the contract; which we couldn't do, we couldn't come close to matching the deal." So Green Bay prevailed, its main attractions being money and coach Mike Holmgren, who took over last year and helped the Packers improve from 4-12 to 9-7. "He liked everyone he met up there in Green Bay. He just hit it off with Mike Holmgren," Sexton said "They're both straightforward guys and they had instant chemistry. He was very close to Buddy Ryan in Philadelphia and he felt the same way about Mike. In the end, it came down to him wanting to play somewhere where he knew he would finish his career. It was the best choice for him with money and they did an incredible job impressing him. It was hard, really hard He was impressed with the field, he was impressed with the new indoor facility." Green Bay is planning to build a $3 million indoor practice facility with completion set for April 1994.

(DETROIT) - Brett Favre got the last laugh on the Lions, despite a record performance by Barry Sanders. Favre, ridiculed after throwing four interceptions against the Lions a week ago, hooked up with Sterling Sharpe for three TD passes Saturday, the last with 55 seconds remaining, as the Packers defeated Detroit. The Packers advanced to the NFC divisional playoffs against the NFC East champion Cowboys in Dallas next Sunday. The Lions had downed the Packers six days earlier for their second NFC Central title in three years. Sanders, who hadn't played since spraining his left knee on Thanksgiving Day, came back to rush 27 times for 169 yards, both single-game club playoff records. Brett Perriman also set a club record with 10 catches for 150 yards, but it wasn't enough against the gritty Packers, who came from behind three times. Sharpe, who broke his own NFL reception record with 112 catches during the regular season, had five catches for 101 yards. His touchdown catches covered 12, 28 and the game-winner of 40 yards. Favre completed 15-of-26 passes for 204 yards with one interception, which Detroit's Melvin Jenkins returned 15 yards for a touchdown. Erik Kramer, the hero of the Lions' late-season turnaround, completed 22-of-31 for 248 yards, including a 1-yard. TD toss to Perriman. But Kramer also threw two interceptions, one of which George Teague returned 101 yards for a touchdown, giving Green Bay a 21-17 lead late in the third quarter. The Lions had second-and-goal at the Green Bay 5 when Teague stepped in front of a pass intended for Ty Hallock. His return was the longest TD in playoff history, the longest TD in NFL playoff history, topping the old mark of 98 yards by Darrol Ray of the New York Jets against Cincinnati in 1982. Undaunted, the Lions took the kickoff and drove 89 yards in 15 plays for a go-ahead TD by Derrick Moore with 8:27 left in the game. The Lions appeared to be in control during the fourth quarter.

(DALLAS) - The Super Bowl champion Dallas Cowboys are back in the NFC championship game against the San Francisco 49ers, but they aren't flawless. The Cowboys earned the rematch against the 49ers with a 27-17 victory Sunday over the Green Bay Packers. Dallas won despite two interceptions, a lost fumble, and untimely penalties in the ragged divisional playoff game before 64,790 fans at Texas Stadium. The Packers gave the ball back too, with Brett Favre throwing two interceptions and losing a fumble. Troy Aikman threw three touchdown passes to offset his interceptions while Emmitt Smith was sidelined most of the second hall when he hurt his separated right shoulder trying to block. Smith, who wore special shoulder pads to protect the injury rushed 13 times for 60 yards and caught two passes for 27 yards before coming out after trying to block Tony Bennett. After the game, Smith said his shoulder was fine. With a 7-3 lead late in the first half, the Cowboys struck for 10 points in 18 seconds to make it 17-3 and discourage the Packers. The scoring spree started with Eddie Murray's 41-yard field goal with 23 seconds left. On the ensuing kickoff, Kenny Gant's tackle knocked the ball away from Green Bay's Corey Harris and Joe Fishback recovered after a wild scramble on the Green Bay 14. Two plays later, Aikman hit Jay Novacek in the end zone from six yards away with five seconds left. 1993 IN REVIEW: Last year, Brett Favre gave the Packers a playoff-caliber offense. This year, DE Reggie White joined the Green and Gold and gave them a playoff-caliber defense. White signed a 4-yard, $17-million deal in April, shocking the NFL. Green Bay's defense improved from 23rd to second, its highest finish since 1972. This turnaround came about despite the loss of LB Brian Noble, whose career ended in Week Two with a knee injury. For the first time since the NFL went to a 16-game schedule in 1978, the Packers held opponents to an average of less than 300 yards per game. WR Sterling Sharpe had another spectacular season, breaking his own NFL record with 112 receptions. Favre did not have the season many expected. He threw 24 interceptions, and showed he had much to learn. Green Bay clinched its first playoff berth since 1982 in Week 15, and had a chance to win the NFC Central when they met the Lions in the finale. Detroit won 30-20, and the Packers went into the playoffs as a wild-card.

Rookie Mark Brunell started the second half for the Packers and immediately led a a 66-yard touchdown drive with Dexter McNabb carrying in from the 1. Brunell also threw two touchdown passes in the closing minutes, a 9-yarder to Sanjay Beach with 4:56 left and a 22-yarder to Ron Lewis with 1:58 left after the Chiefs fumbled a punt. The Chiefs got a safety on a bizarre play late in the third quarter. Kansas City tight end Mike Dyal caught a deflected pass, fumbled at the Packers 5. Green Bay's George Teague recovered but then fumbled himself and teammate George Koonce fell on the ball in the end zone, giving Kansas City two points and a 22-7 lead. The 6-foot-6 Blundin, who also played basketball at Virginia, later led a 71-yard, 14-play drive with Darius Turner scoring from the 5 with 9:59 left to make it 29-7. Krieg completed 8 of 13 passes for 71 yards in the first quarter. Blundin was 11 of 16 for 141 in the second quarter and finished 17 of 25 for 222 yards.

(GREEN BAY) - Brett Favre directed three long scoring drives, one in the final two minutes of the first half, as the Packers routed the Colts Friday night to avoid a winless exhibition season. Marcus Wilson scored twice on special teams plays in the fourth quarter and the Packers added a field goal to build on a 24-3 lead after three quarters. Wilson, a second-year runing back, scooped up a fumbled punt and returned it 40 yards for a touchdown. Then with 1:37 left, he grabbed an onside kick and took it 42 yards for the final score. Favre moved the Packers 67 yards in 11 plays at the end of the second quarter, hitting Shawn Collins for a 4-yard touchdown with 9 seconds remaining to put Green Bay ahead 10-3. The score come at the end of a sloppy, mistake-filled half for the Packers, who were penalized seven times for 50 yards.

Interceptions by Charles Haley and Darren Woodson in the second half negated any comeback thoughts. Favre was 28-for-45 passes for a team playoff record 331 yards. The slow-starting Cowboys finally got their high-powered offense into gear in the second period after two turnovers. They drove 68 yards to score on a 25-yard pass from Aikman to Alvin Harper.

PACKERS AND FREE AGENCY
The first free agent period, which began in 1993, was ushered in with perhaps the biggest impact signing of all time. The Packers gave defensive lineman Reggie White a 4-year contract worth $17 million. He amassed 68 ½ sacks in six seasons with Green Bay and led the Packers to a Super Bowl win. White was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2006. The Packers have not made many bad decisions, and some of their decisions not to sign players turned out to be wise:
* DESMOND HOWARD (1997 - Signed a 4-year, $6 million deal with Oakland) - Howard broke the single-season record for punt return yards in Super Bowl XXXI. He was named the Super Bowl MVP after returning a kickoff for a touchdown, and then left for the Raiders, with the promise that Oakland would use him as a wide receiver. The former Heisman Trophy winner caught six passes for 46 yards during his two seasons with the Raiders. He did return two punts for touchdowns in 1998, but his two-year total of 751 punt return yards didn't even match his 1996 season.
* DOUG EVANS (1997 - Signed a 5-year, $22.5 deal with Carolina) - Evans was another Super Bowl member who cashed in after the game. He played four years in Carolina, picking off 14 passes in 57 games.
* MARCO RIVERA (2005 - Signed 5-year, $20 million deal with Dallas) - On the heels of three consecutive Pro Bowls with Green Bay, Rivera'ssigning bonus of $9 million equaled the largest ever given to a guard at that point. Although he missed just two games in two seasons as a Cowboy, he underwent two back operations during that time and was cut after the '06 season. With Rivera on the way out, Dallas signed Leonard Davis to a seven-year, $49.6 million contract with $18.75 million guaranteed.
* AHMAN GREEN (2007 - Signed 4-year, $23 million deal with Houston) - After averaging 4.5 yards per rush over seven seasons for the Green Bay Packers, Ahman Green entered the free agent market looking for a big contract. Although he had just sustained a serious injury, the Texans felt the need to sign him. Over 2 seasons, Green played in 14 games and scored five touchdowns. He was released in February 2009.
THE BIGGEST FREE AGENT BUST FOR THE PACKERS
* JOE JOHNSON (2002 - Signed a 6-year, $33 million deal with Green Bay) - A two-time Pro Bowl defensive end with the Saints, Johnson was guaranteed $14 million over the first three seasons of this deal. He only lasted two seasons, making two sacks and 12 tackles in just in 11 games.
OTHER MAJOR SIGNINGS
* DE SEAN JONES (1994) - Signed a a three-year, $7.8 million contract
* DT SANTANA DOTSON (1996) - Signed a three-year, $4.8 million contract.
* CB CHARLES WOODSON (2006) - Signed a seven-year deal for $52.7 million, including $10.5 million in the first year of the contract.
When they finally had to punt, the Packers had the ball on their own 29 with only 2:26 remaining. But Favre picked up 27 yards on three passes and Edgar Bennett ran for 4 yards to give the Packers second-and-4 at the Detroit 40. Favre then found Sharpe all alone in blown coverage behind Kevin Scott and hit him in the right corner of the end zone for the go-ahead TD. "I thought I was supposed to bump Sterling and let him go," Scott said. "I was playing the coverage I thought I was supposed to be in. It was a miscommunication. We weren't all playing the same defense. It's just a sad way for us to lose." It was a tough loss.for the Lions. They gained 410 yards while holding Green Bay to 293, and Detroit had possession 35:34 to 24:26 for the Packers. But the Packers made the plays when they had to.
