(GREEN BAY) - Terry Allen's footwork on a slippery field brought the Vikings a 23-20 victory over the Packers in overtime in the first game for a pair of rookie head coaches. Allen's 45-yard run to the Green Bay 11 set up Fuad Reveiz's 25-yard field goal with 4:40 left, giving Dennis Green the win in his first game as Vikings coach. Until Allen's run - he had a 51-yarder in the fourth quarter to set up another score - the overtime was a series of slips and errors on a field made slick by a fourth-quarter rain. Green Bay's Don Majkowski completed his first pass of overtime for his 13th straight completion, but then was intercepted and threw four incompletions on his next five attempts. The Vikings, who lost a fumble in overtime, also couldn't move until Allen took a draw play handoff and picked his way through the Packers defense. QB Rich Gannon then carried for 2 yards before Reveiz hit his third field goal of the game.

(TAMPA BAY) - Vinny Testaverde shrugged off the flu to play the game of his career, leading host Tampa Bay over the Packers for the Buccaneers' first 2-0 start in 12 years. The often-criticized quarterback became the Bucs' career passing leader while completing 22 of 25 attempts for 363 yards and two touchdowns. He also scored on a 2-yard run, hitting Adrian White at the goal line and spiking the ball in the safety's face after forcing his way into the end zone. The Bucs' no-huddle offense wasn't the whole story, though. Tampa Bay's defense played well for the second straight week, limiting the Packers to Chris Jacke's 33-yard field goal. A Santana Dotson sack knocked Don Majkowski out of the game, so Brett Favre (8 of 14 for 73 yards with 1 INT) saw his first action. Favre's first NFL completion was actually a deflected pass to himself.

(GREEN BAY) - Brett Favre, forced into the game by a first quarter injury to Don Majkowski, threw a 35-yard touchdown pass to Kitrick Taylor with 13 seconds left, giving the Packers over the Bengals. With no timeouts, the Packers moved 92 yards in five plays during their game winning drive that took just 54 seconds. Favre had a key 42-yard completion to Sterling Sharpe in the drive, which capped Green Bay's 21-point fourth quarter. Taylor's catch behind the Bengals' defense and Chris Jacke's ensuing point after gave Mike Holmgren his first coaching victory and Cincinnati rookie head coach Dave Shula his first defeat. Green Bay trailed 17-3 after three quarters, but rookie first-round pick Terrell Buckley, in his first NFL game, returned a punt 58 yards for one touchdown and Favre, a second-year player, hit Sharpe for a 5-yard touchdown to cap an 88-yard drive. The Bengals took a 23-17 lead on Jim Breech's 41 yard field goal, his third of the game, with 1:07 to play. Breech missed from 36 yards, but got a second chance when the Bengals were called for motion.

(GREEN BAY) - Brett Favre, making his first NFL start, twice threw touchdown passes after special team breakdowns by Pittsburgh as the Green Bay Packers beat the previously unbeaten Steelers, 17-3. The Packers shut out the Steelers after Gary Anderson hit an early first-quarter field goal to give Pittsburgh a 3-0 lead. Favre, who stepped in last week for the injured Don Majkowski, hit Sterling Sharpe with a 76-yard scoring pass in the second quarter to put the Packers up 10-3 at the half after Green Bay had blocked a 20-yard field goal attempt by Anderson. Then after Rod Woodson muffed a punt early in the fourth quarter, Favre flipped an 8-yarder to Robert Brooks with 12:52 left to make it 17-3. It was the first points the Steelers had given up in the second half this season. Woodson let the ball bounce and then tried to catch it, but he lost the ball when hit by Tim Hauck. Green Bay's George Koonce recovered in the end zone for an apparent touchdown, but the officials then ruled that Woodson had muffed the ball and gave the Packers the ball at the Steelers 8. Favre then pump faked and lofted the ball to Brooks in the right corner of the end zone on the next play. Favre completed 14 of 19 passes for 210 yards. Down two touchdowns, the Steelers then drove 50 yards to the Green Bay 26, but Neil O'Donnell threw four straight incompletions. Pittsburgh reached the Green Bay 12 in the final two minutes but still couldn't score. O'Donnell finished with 16 completions on 41 attempts for 224 yards.

Miller threw three touchdown passes, two to Andre Rison, as the Falcons snapped a three-game losing streak with a 24-10 victory over the Green Bay Packers. Brett Favre, a rookie backup with Atlanta last year, completed 33 of 43 passes for 276 yards, but could produce only one touchdown for the Packers. The outcome left both teams with 2-3 records. Miller's scoring passes to Rison covered 10 and 21 yards. He also threw a 2-yard scoring pass to Mike Pritchard.

(CLEVELAND) - Cleveland's "bend, don't break" defense made it 13 straight quarters without allowing a touchdown, and Kevin Mack scored twice as the Browns beat the visiting Green Bay Packers, 17-6. The Browns, concerned about their offense in recent weeks because of the loss of quarterbacks Bernie Kosar and Todd Philcox to injury, won for the third time in four games by limiting the Packers to a pair of field goals by Chris Jacke. Mack scored his 49th and 50th career touchdowns on short runs to cap the Browns' first two possessions of the second half. Mike Tomczak and Eric Metcalf connected on a 30-yard completion to set up the first, and Lawyer Tillman helped set up the second with an 18-yard reception, his first catch since 1989. Tillman missed the last two seasons with leg injuries. The Browns entered the game ranked 24th in the NFL defensively, giving up an average of 350 yards per game. But they've repeatedly stopped opponents in the red zone, yielding a league-low six touchdowns. It happened again Sunday, with the Packers getting inside the Cleveland 30 five times but coming away with only six points. Green Bay squandered two excellent chances late in the first half, fumbling the ball away twice in a span of 15 seconds. Darrell Thompson fumbled at the Cleveland 24, but the Browns' Leroy Hoard gave it back at the Cleveland 26 one play later. Vince Workman finished off the sorry sequence by fumbling again on the very next play. Three plays, three lost fumbles. The Packers' best chance for a touchdown came late in the third period, when they had a first down at the Cleveland 9. A sack, an incomplete pass and a fumbled snap from center stalled the drive, and Jacke settled for a 37-yard field goal. Brett Favre, starting his third straight game, completed 20 of 33 passes.

(GREEN BAY) - Jim Harbaugh, who undoubtedly will be remembered for an imperfect decision that led to an earlier loss and public dressing down by coach Mike Ditka, was perfect for a good stretch. Harbaugh matched a 28-yearold club record of 13 straight complete passes while leading the visiting Chicago Bears to a 30-10 victory over the Green Bay Packers. Kevin Butler kicked three field goals and Darren Lewis had a 30-yard touchdown run to make it easy for the Bears. Harbaugh's string tied the record set by Rudy Bukich over two games in 1964 and included a 4-yard touchdown pass to Keith Jennings. The passing game also set up two of Butler's field goals. The streak began early in the second quarter and ended shortly before Butler kicked a 21-yard field goal with 36 seconds left in the third. Late in the fourth quarter, the Bears drove 74 yards in 11 plays to clinch the victory on Lewis' run with 3.37 left. The loss was the third straight for the Packers and marked the first time the Bears had won two in a row this season. Harbaugh completed 16 of 23 passes for 194 yards and one touchdown, and perhaps eased the pressure Ditka put on him October 4 after the quarterback called an audible with a 20-0 lead in the fourth period against Minnesota. The Vikings intercepted for a touchdown and came back to win 21-20. Brett Favre of Green Bay saw his string of 91 passes without an interception end in the third quarter when Donnell Woolford intercepted for Chicago.

(DETROIT) - The pattern was familiar. Barry Sanders couldn't run, and the Lions' once-potent offense couldn't move. Meanwhile, Brett Favre passed for 212 yards and two touchdowns. The Lions, who appeared to be rebounding from a 1-5 start after bombing Tampa Bay 38-7 a week earlier, fell to dead last in the Central, a notch below the Packers. Sanders, with only two 100-yard rushing games all season, was held to 38 yards on 12 carries by the Packers. He was almost as effective a receiver, catching five passes for 30 yards. Favre, gaining more confidence with each start, completed 22 of 37 passes, including a 14-yard touchdown toss to Jackie Harris and a 30- yard scoring flip to Sterling Sharpe that broke it open in the fourth quarter. Rodney Peete completed 14 of 28 passes for 148 yards for the Lions' faltering offense. He was sacked four times. Detroit's only touchdown came on the 7-yard return of a blocked punt by Bennie Blades. (NEW YORK) - As hard as they tried, the New York Giants couldn't give away Sunday's game to the Green Bay Packers. So Green Bay, trailing by six points and given a second chance by New York, handed it right back on Reyna Thompson's 69-yard interception return for the clinching touchdown in the Giants' 27-7 victory. The key series came with 4 1/2 minutes remaining. Pepper Johnson intercepted a weak pass by Brett Favre and, while returning it, made several turns rather than falling down. Favre then knocked the ball loose and Sanjay Beach recovered for Green Bay. Two plays later, Thompson stepped in front of tight end Jackie Harris, grabbed Favre's pass and sped down the sidelines. The quarterback missed a tackle on the only chance to stop
Thompson. Lawrence Taylor played what was probably his last game in the NFL. The star linebacker ruptured his Achilles' tendon late in the third quarter after he blocked a pass. Taylor, who earlier this year announced he will retire after the season, was carted off the field. The Giants, who have won three straight, improved to 5-4. The Packers took a 7-6 lead with a precision drive of 75 yards in 12 plays, taking up 8:08 in the second period. Vince Workman carried six times for 27 yards on the drive, scoring his first touchdown from the 3. The Giants were forced to punt on the next series after two monster hits by safety Chuck Cecil broke up plays. But Workman fumbled when hit by Taylor and Erik Howard recovered at the Packers' 41. Three plays later, Stephen Baker outjumped Terrell Buckley for a 34-yard gain on which Buckley never turned for the ball. Rodney Hampton scored from the 2 for a 13-7 lead.

Randall Cunningham, returning from a one-game benching, led the Eagles to two touchdowns in the fourth quarter and a 24-21 lead. The Packers tied it on Jacke's 31-yard field goal with 1:31 left, a score set up by Heath Sherman's fumble. The Eagles got the ball back, but Herschel Walker fumbled it away at the 23, Green Bay ran one play into the middle of the field and brought in Jacke. Cunningham, back after being replaced by Jim McMahon last week, completed 14 of 23 passes for 169 yards and one touchdown. Brett Favre hit 23 of 33 passes for 275 yards and two scores.

Brett Favre hit Sterling Sharpe with a 49-yard touchdown pass and scored on a 5-yard, broken-pass run to lead the Packers to a 17-3 victory over the faltering Bears. It was the third victory in the last four games for the Packers. The Bears sustained their fourth straight defeat, their longest losing streak since 1989, when they lost their last six. The teams traded first-possession field goals and, late in the first quarter, the Bears were forced to punt into the wind. Chris Gardocki managed just a 34-yard punt. On the next play, Favre and Sharpe combined on their 49-yard touchdown to put the Packers ahead to stay. It was the 66th consecutive game in which Sharpe, the league's leading receiver this year, has caught a pass. Favre completed 16 of 24 passes for 209 yards. Neither team scored in the second quarter as a light drizzle turned into rain.

Green Bay has now won four of its last five. Tampa Bay lost for the seventh time in its last eight games. The Bucs had beaten the Packers 31-3 on the second Sunday of the season. Favre completed 26 of 41 passes for 223 yards. Sterling Sharpe, the NFL's leading receiver, had nine catches, giving him 363 for his careers, the most ever in a player's first five years. Trailing 14-12, the Packers moved 69 yards in 15 plays as Favre passed to Harris for a 9-yard touchdown pass with 10:09 left for a 19-14 lead.

(MILWAUKEE) - The Pack got back over .500, scoring five first half touchdowns on a snow covered field and routing Detroit behind a strong defense and the passing of Brett Favre. Green Bay won four in a row for the first time in eight years as Favre passed for three first-half touchdowns, one a bizarre 65 yarder to Sterling Sharpe, and Tony Bennett returned a fumble 18 yards for another score. The Packers helped their wildcard playoff possibilities against the Lions, who had problems with footing and fumbles on a slippery afternoon at County Stadium. Green Bay led 35-10 at the half, the most points the Packers have scored in a half since 1983, and finished with a season-high 166 rushing yards. Detroit fumbled five times in the first half, losing two, and had eight for the game, losing four. Detroit's Barry Sanders gained 114 yards, joining Eric Dickerson, Tony Dorsett and Earl Campbell as the only players to rush for 1,000 yards in each of their first four NFL seasons. The win kept Green Bay a game behind Philadelphia and Washington in the race for the final wildcard berth in the NFC.

(HOUSTON) - The Packers hadn't won five games in a row since 1966 - until Sunday night. Flirting with their own history, Green Bay beat Houston 16-14 with the help of three field goals by Chris Jacke and a defense that gummed up the Oilers' run and-shoot. The victory gave the Packers new playoff potential, while the loss by the Oilers sealed the AFC Central title for the Steelers despite a 30-6 loss to Chicago. The Oilers tried to rally in the second half, but couldn't overcome their mistakes. Their fourth turnover, a fumble by Cody Carlson at the Packer 37, led to a 6-yard touchdown pass from Brett Favre to Sterling Sharpe with 3:33 left in the game, giving Green Bay a 16-7 lead. Favre completed all five of his passes in the drive. Houston came right back in closing seconds with a 77-yard drive capped by Lorenzo White's 2-yard run with 1:55 left. The Oilers then tried an onside kick that failed despite a scramble for the ball, and the Packers ran out the clock. The Oilers stymied themselves with two fumbles and two interceptions, with the Packers producing two field goals and a touchdown from the miscues. Field goals of 39, 36 and 20 yards by Jacke put Green Bay ahead 9-0 with 8:31 elapsed in the third quarter before the Oilers' offense woke up.

(GREEN BAY) - The Packers still are on the outside looking in for a playoff berth, even after beating the cold and the Rams for their sixth straight victory. The Packers scored four touchdowns in the final 6:48 of the second quarter for a 28-10 halftime lead behind the play of Terrell Buckley and Sterling Sharpe and then held on in frigid temperatures. Game-time temperature was 8 degrees with a wind chill of 15 below. By the second half, it had warmed up to 14 with the wind chill at 5 below. But to make the playoffs, the Packers will have to do so as a wild card after the Vikings beat the Steelers, 6-3, Sunday to clinch the NFC Central. Green Bay needs to win in the Metrodome next Sunday and hope that either Philadelphia or Washington loses. The Eagles (10-5) beat the Redskins (9-6) Sunday, 17-13. In case of a three-way tie, the Packers would still make the playoffs. Buckley made two interceptions, returning one for a 33-yard touchdown, and also made a touchdown-saving tackle. Sharpe, meanwhile, caught eight first-half passes, two for touchdowns, to move within four catches of tying Art Monk's single season record of 106 receptions. And Green Bay's defense made one goal line stand in the first half, giving up only a field goal after stopping the Rams three times from the 1. Los Angeles twice moved to the Packers 4 in the fourth quarter and came away scoreless. Jim Price dropped a pass in the end zone on a fourth down to end one series and Jim Everett threw incomplete on fourth to end the other. The Rams had an early 7-0 lead after Everett hit Willie Anderson with a 16-yard touchdown pass following a fumble by Green Bay's Darrell Thompson on the second play from scrimmage. Darryl Henley intercepted a Brett Favre pass in the end zone and then the Rams were on the verge of a 14-point turnaround when David Lang broke loose on a 71-yard run to the Packers 3 when Buckley chased him down and saved a touchdown. A penalty on Green Bay moved the ball to the 1 and from there the Packers stopped three straight running plays, forcing the Rams to go for Tony Zendejas' 19 yard field goal and a 10-0 lead. The Packers then moved 61 yards in nine plays, the big play a third down pass to TE Jackie Harris, who made a juggling catch for a 16 yard gain and first down at the 15. Thompson's 2-yard run touchdown run made it 10-7 with 6:48 until half. Everett then threw a floater into the 15 mph wind and Buckely made an over the-shoulder interception and zig-zagged across the field for the touchdown that made it 14-10. After a short punt, Favre and Sharpe hooked up four times for 59 yards on a 61-yard drive. Sharpe caught a 17-yard touchdown pass from with 1:20 left in the half as Green Bay took a 21-10 lead.

(MINNESOTA) - The Vikings made sure they wouldn't have to play the Packers again this season. Sean Salisbury ignited the Vikings' dormant pass offense, throwing for a career-high 292 yards and two touchdowns. The loss eliminated the Packers from playoff contention and stopped their six-game winning streak. Terry Allen ran for 100 yards and set the single-season rushing record for the Vikings. Allen finished with 1,201 yards, 46 more than Chuck Foreman gained in 1976 - Minnesota's last Super Bowl season. Not even Sterling Sharpe, who caught six passes to end the year with 108, eclipsing Art Monk's NFL-record 106-reception season of 1984, could get the Packers (9-7) into the playoffs. Because the Washington Redskins were upset by the Los Angeles Raiders on Saturday, the Packers knew going in that a victory would put them in the playoffs for the first time in a nonstrike season since 1972. Green Bay would have returned to the Metrodome next weekend. Instead, Minnesota on Saturday will be home for the defending Super Bowl champion Redskins (9-7), who have the tiebreaker advantage over the Packers because of a better record in conference games. The Vikings, who clinched the NFC Central title with last week's win at Pittsburgh, lost to Washington here, 15-13, on Oct. 25. Minnesota had relied almost exclusively on Allen's rushing and its outstanding defense to win the division. Between them, Salisbury and Rich Gannon combined for two touchdown passes since the Redskins game. Vikings coach Dennis Green has flip-flopped his quarterbacks the last five weeks, looking for a hot hand. He found one Sunday in Salisbury. Salisbury completed 20 of 33 passes, including a 13-yard first quarter touchdown pass to Steve Jordan and a 34-yard scoring pass to his other tight end, Mike Tice, in the second period.

1992 IN REVIEW: A new coach and one trade turned around the Green Bay Packer franchise. Mike Holmgren was brought in from San Francisco in January, where he was the offensive coordinator, to turn the team around. In February, GM Ron Wolf traded a first-round draft choice to the Atlanta Falcons for QB Brett Favre. The second-year player replaced Don Majkowski in Week Three and would remain as Packer quarterback into the next century. WR Sterling Sharpe responded well to the change, by setting an NFL record with 108 receptions. Chuck Cecil, Johnny Holland and Tony Bennett led the Packer defense, with Bennett racking up 13 1/2 sacks. Having already clinched a winning record, the Packers headed to Minnesota for the final game of the season. A win was needed to get Green Bay in the playoffs for the first time in ten years, but the Vikings rolled over them 27-7. It was the last time Green Bay would be denied a playoff berth for several years.

(LOS ANGELES) - Substitute Steve Domingos hit a 36-yard field goal in overtime to rally Los Angeles over Green Bay, the second straight game LA won on an extra-period kick. On the first possession of overtime, the Rams drove 45 yards in 9 plays to set up the kick by Domingos, a punter subbing for the injured Tony Zendejas. With the score tied at 13 with under two minutes left, the Packers got within field goal range, but Chris Jacke's 44-yard attempt went wide by about 2 feet as time expired.

(MILWAUKEE) - Hugh Millen hit Marv Cook with two second-quarter touchdown passes as New England finally won an exhibition game. The Patriots built a 17-10 halftime lead with the aid of several Packers mistakes and then used the second interception of Don Majkowski to set up a third quarter touchdown. Maurice Hurst picked off a pass and returned it 24 yards to the Green Bay 22. Millen's 15-yard pass to Irving Fryar and a defensive holding call against safety LeRoy Butler set up a 2-yard scoring run by Leonard Russell with 6:43 left in the period that gave the Patriots a two-touchdown cushion. Majkowski drew boos when he returned to the field. He completed 16 of 24 passes for 163 yards in three quarters as the Packers finished the exhibition season with three straight losses after winning their opener.

(GREEN BAY) - Brett Favre tossed a go-ahead, fourth-quarter touchdown pass to Jerry Evans after an interception by Brett Collins as Green Bay beat the Chiefs in Mike Holmgren's debut as Packers head coach. Collins, a rookie linebacker chosen in the 12th round, intercepted backup quarterback Mark Vlasic on the second play of the fourth quarter at the Chiefs 28. Favre hit a 9- yard pass to rookie Dexter McNabb, ran an 8-yard keeper and found tight end Evans from 5 yards out with 11:10 left as Green Bay took its first lead at 14-10. Dave Krieg, who completed 12 straight passes during one first-half stretch, hit a 13-yard pass to Fred Jones to reach Green Bay's 5 and then hit Bill Jones with a 2-yard touchdown pass with 8:37 left in the quarter

(MADISON) - Browning Nagle passed for two first-half touchdowns, one a 70-yarder to Rob Carpenter, and set up a third as the Jets stayed perfect in the preseason by beating the Green Bay Packers. The Jets improved to 3-0 in the penalty-filled game by striking for three second-quarter touchdowns and shutting down the Packers. Nagle, who completed only 2 of 11 passes last week against the Redskins, connected on 9 of 16 for 208 yards in his one half of play. In a span of 3:36, he hit Terance Mathis with a 7-yard touchdown pass and Carpenter with the 70-yarder that made it 17-7 with 7:19 left in the half. Nagle later found Chns Burkett with a 28-yard pass to the Packers 1 in the closing minute and Freeman McNeil earned the final yard for the touchdown with 30 seconds to go, giving the Jets a 24-7 halftime lead. Erik McMillan blocked a punt by Green Bay's Bryan Wagner, leading to a 32-yard field goal by Jason Staurovsky that put the Jets ahead 3-0 early in the game But Lewis Billups' 40-yard interception return less than three minutes later gave the Packers a 7-3 lead.

THE END OF THE GORY YEARS - WHERE DID THEY GO?
As Brett Favre, Mike Holmgren, Edgar Bennett and others took over center stage for the Packers in the 1992, they left behind a dismal legacy, known to some as the "Gory Years". While the record was less than stellar, there were some names and characters, who did not share in the Glory Days of the 1990s. What happened to some of those names and characters?
TOM BRAATZ (General Manager, 1987-1991) - Braatz came to the Packers from Atlanta, where he worked the first 22 years of the franchise's existence. His time in Green Bay was marked with some bad draft choices and an tense relationship with the fans and media. The Packers hired Mike Reinfeldt as the chief financial officer to take the burden of negotiating contracts away from Braatz and give him more time to concentrate on football issues, but some observers said Braatz had lost some clout in the organization while Lindy Infante had become more powerful. After his firing in Green Bay, Braatz joined the Dolphins in 1992 as Director of College Scouting and spent his final two years with the club as a college scout before retiring in 2003.
LINDY INFANTE (Head coach, 1988-1991) - Infante left Green Bay with a dismal 24-40 record. After the Colts saw popular and successful coach Ted Marchibroda leave the team when the contract offered him was far less than he was expecting, Infante was named head coach in 1996. He matched the previous year’s record of 9-7, but slid quickly, finishing the next year at 3-13, after which he was dismissed by owner Jim Irsay.
DON MAJKOWSKI (Quarterback, 1997-1992) - After being released on June 1, 1993, the Majik Man signed with the Indianapolis Colts as a backup for two seasons. He finished his career for the Detroit Lions, also in a backup role, in 1995 and 1996. In his final season, Majkowski faced the Packers, who were on their way to the Super Bowl, in a November game. He completed 15 of 32 passes for 153 yards and a touchdown. He was also sacked 5 times.
TONY MANDARICH (Offensive Tackle, 1989-1992) - Mandarich played in 14 games his first year as a reserve. He started 16 games in 1990 and 15 in 1991. In 1992, he was bothered by a viral infection and a thyroid condition, then was sidelined with a concussion in the Packers' exhibition opener August 8 against Kansas City. He never played for Green Bay again, and was released on February 28, 1993, when the team did not offer him a new contract. The question of steroid use has been discussed as a possible factor in Mandarich's spectacular failure. This accusation is one that Mandarich only admitted in 2008. Mandarich returned to football for three years between 1996 and 1998 with the Indianapolis Colts. He had a more successful, if not particularly noteworthy, career with the Colts before retiring from football in 1998. He claims that his time during the Colts he was "clean", stating he did not take steroids during this time.
DARRELL THOMPSON (1990-1994) - Thompson was selected in 19th overall in the 1990 NFL Draft. During his NFL career, he played in 60 games, gained 1640 rushing, 330 yards receiving, and scored 8 touchdowns. He was released in training camp in 1994, then brough back later in the season when LeShon Johnson was injured. It was his last hurrah in the NFL.
