SEASON REVIEW - Coming off a winning season in 1978, the Packers were filled with optimism heading into the 1979 campaign. Unfortunately, the worst rushing defense in the league, the dismissal of a long-time member of the franchise, and a long list of injuries led to a disappointing 5-11 record. For the first time, Bart Starr's future as head coach was being openly questioned. The only bright spots appeared to be the return of Lynn Dickey, the first win over Minnesota in five years, and the successful debut of Monday Night Football at Lambeau Field. Green Bay's defense allowed more than 150 yards rushing in 14 of the 16 games and the team went 3-11 in those contests. No other defense was rushed on as much (639 carries), and the 2,885 yards given up on the ground was the fourth-worst in NFL history up to this point. Defensive coordinator Dave Hanner was fired in December after 28 years with the Packers organization. As for injuries, the parade started in the first game when top draft choice Eddie Lee Ivery went down with a torn knee ligament. Mike Hunt, Barty Smith, Bobby Kimball and Steve Atkins were also lost for the season with various ailments. Mark Koncar (ankle), John Anderson (broken arm), Ezra Johnson (ankle), Mike Butler (elbow) and Terdell Middleton (shoulder) all missed significant playing time.

August 18: Green Bay (2-1) 7, Buffalo 6
(GREEN BAY) - Lynn Dickey, playing in his first game since Nov. 13, 1977, connected with James Lofton with 15 seconds left to give the Packers a victory over the Buffalo Bills Saturday night. The Packers improved their record to 2-1 while Buffalo's record dropped to 0-3. "I feel David (Whitehurst) is still the No.l quarterback." said Dickey. "I don't feel I'm able to go through a game and get away from people the way he's able to do." There was little question who was No 1 Saturday night. Whitehurst had only nine completions in 17 passes for 40 yards while Dickey completed 10-of- 19 for 126 yards and the winning touchdown.

August 25: Green Bay (3-1) 45, Atlanta 35
(MILWAUKEE) - David Whitehurst said he felt compelled to have a big game, but had not expected the Green Bay Packers to have their highest-scoring exhibition game since they beat Philadelphia in 1959. Whitehurst passed for 238 yards, including touchdowns of 7 yards to Paul Coffman and 30 to James Lofton, leading the Packers over the Atlanta Falcons Saturday night. Rookie Eddie Lee Ivery scored on a 3-yard run and turned a short pass from Lynn Dickey into a 42-yard touchdown play for the Packers. Green Bay, against a team that had the National Football League's fifth best defense last season, gained 442 yards.

August 4: Green Bay (1-0) 14, Kansas City 10
(GREEN BAY) - Green Bay No. 1 draft pick, Eddie Lee Ivery, slithered through the Kansas City Chiefs for six yards on his first official carry as a Packer. He gained six more yards on his first pass reception. On his first blocking assignment, he not only missed his man but nearly tripped over a teammate. Well, two out of three ain't bad. "Overall, I'd say I did pretty good," said Ivery after being voted the most valuable offensive player in the Packers' pre-season victory over the Chiefs Saturday night. Ivery gained 49 yards in nine carries and caught three passes for 32 yards, including a 22-yard run with a screen pass that put the Packers ahead for good in the third quarter. The Chiefs, trying to rebuild from a disastrous 4-12 season, had taken a 10-7 halftime lead on Jan Stenerud's 44-yard field goal and quarterback Pete Woods' one-yard sneak. But they mounted just one serious threat in the second half and that fizzled when a pass by pnze rookie Steve Fuller was picked off in the end zone by rookie defensive back Carlos Henderson.

August 11: Cincinnati 20, Green Bay (1-1) 5
(CINCINNATI) - Archie Griffin scored two first-half touchdowns and Chris Bahr kicked two field goals to lift the Cincinnati Bengals over the punchless Packers. Griffin, the nation's only two-time Heisman trophy winner while at Ohio State, scored on a 2-yard run in the opening quarter and on an 18- yard pass from Ken Anderson in the second period. Bahr added field goals of 25 and 40 yards to complete the Cincinnati scoring. Green Bay, which managed only three first downs in the first half, got its only scoring on a 46-yard field goal by Chester Marcol late in the third quarter and on a safety in the final period. The safety came when a snap by Cincinnati rookie center Max Montoya sailed over the head of punter Pat Mclnally and out of the end zone.

THE FIRST MONDAY NIGHT GAME IN GREEN BAY
The New England Patriots were a pre-season Super Bowl contender. The Green Bay Packers were coming off their first winning season in six years. The Packers, who some had picked to win the NFC Central, were off to a dismal 1-3 record, while the Pats were living up to their expectations at 3-1. And for the first time in franchise history, Monday Night Football was coming to Green Bay.
The three previous Monday Night games in Wisconsin had all been played in Milwaukee, due to the simple fact that there were lights at County Stadium. The hype for the game was noticeable, especially since days before the game, the Brown County sheriff’s office received a death threat aimed at Cosell. With help from the FBI, Cosell was kept safe and sound.
Green Bay came into the game in disarray. When Bart Starr chose to run out the clock late in a tie game in Minnesota the week before, a game the Vikings went on to win, he nearly had a locker-room mutiny on his hands. Star wide receiver James Lofton threw his pads into his locker during the Packers' postgame prayer and had words with Starr. He also dropped some passes observers felt he should have caught, leading a Green Bay newspaper to run a cartoon in which he was called a "ham-handed and overpaid receiver."
Green Bay came into the Patriots game as 8 1/2 point underdogs. When Tim Fox intercepted a David Whitehurst pass in Packer territory and Steve Grogan threw a scoring pass to TE Russ Francis, it appeared the rout was on. Instead, it was the Patriots who turned into bumblers, with six turnovers. SS Johnnie Gray came up with the first of the Packers’ five interceptions, and the subsequent 41-yard, five-play drive ended FB Barty Smith dove a yard for the tying score.
The Packers took the lead for good on a 74-yard drive that ended with a Whitehurst pass to WR Aundra Thompson. The victory was the highlight of a dismal 5-11 year. The season would continue to unravel, punctuated during a loss to the Jets at Green Bay in November. The fans booed Lofton for fumbling a fourth-quarter pass. His reply was a middle-finger slate. In a postgame TV interview, he said he was bleeped-off at the stupid bleeps in the stands. That prompted a Packers public-relations man to say of him, "He needs to grow up. He's a prima donna." As for the Patriots, they would bounce back to win their next three, but a losing streak late in the season sent them to a 9-7 record, and no playoff berth despite those lofty predicitions.
