November 14: Minnesota Vikings (7-2) 3, Green Bay Packers (3-5-1) 0
(MINNESOTA) - The Minnesota Vikings turned back repeated Green Bay scoring threats and then got a 25-yard field goal from Fred Cox with 4:02 to play for a 3-0 win. The fired up Packers drove to the Minnesota 16, 21, 1, 10 and 8 yard lines but still came away without a point. The Vikngs arose with a deflected field goal attempt, a goal line stand, two interceptions and a fumble recovery - each time with their backs in the shadow of the posts. Charlie West, starting for the first time at strong safety, turned in the key defensive play when he intercepted Scott Hunter's pass intended for Rich McGeorge in the end zone and raced 50 yards to midfield. The Vikings, who until that point had made only 52 yards total offense, got first downs on Gary Cuozzo's 12-yard pass to Bob Grim and later on Dave Osborn's six-yard run to the 26 before calling in Cox, who has scored in a record 121 straight games. The field goal opened up Minnesota's lead in the Central Division with a 7-2 record. Rookie John Brockington carried the Green Bay offense almost single-handedly by picking up 149 yards on 23 carries. But when the Packers got close, the Vikings stiffened.

1971 IN REVIEW: Dan Devine's first game as head coach of the Green Bay Packers had him feeling literally run down. Besides losing to the New York Giants 42-40, the long-time college coach broke his leg midway through the fourth quarter in a sideline pileup following an interception by Doug Hart. Devine was taken to Saint Vincent Hospital where he listened to the remainder of the game on the radio. Devine, who had posted winning records at both Arizona State and the University of Missouri, struggled in his first year in the professional ranks. Inconsistency, turnovers and the lack of a passing game led to a 4-8-2 record, the worst for Green Bay in 13 years.

August 7 : Chicago 2, Green Bay (0-1) 0
(MILWAUKEE) - The Bears forced quarterback Frank Patrick behind his own end zone for a third quarter safety Saturday night, then held on for a 2-0 victory over Green Bay. The break which ultimately spoiled Dan Devines' Packer coaching debut in a bitter defensive struggle came when Bobby Joe Green boomed a 69-yard punt that rolled dead on the Green Bay 11-yard line late in the third period. Willie Holman nailed Patrick for a loss to the one, but the Packers momentarily got out of that hole when a defensive holding penalty gave them a first down on their own six. But on the next play, Patrick faded to pass under a fierce rush and three Bear linemen forced him behind his own end zone for the game's only score. Karl Kremser missed a 53-yard field goal try and Dale Livingston attempt from 43 for Green Bay. Kremser had tried another from 33 yards out in the first quarter, but was smeared after holder Donnie Anderson fumbled the snap. Reserve Bear quarterback Bobby Douglas was sacked 10 times for 95 yards in losses.

August 14 : Pittsburgh 16, Green Bay (0-2) 13
(GREEN BAY) - Terry Bradshaw capped a 98-yard fourth-period drive with a 33-yard touchdown pass to Dave Smith Saturday night to rally the Steelers to a 16-13 victory over the Packers. The Steelers took over on their own two-yard line after the Packers' Dave Hampton was racked for no gain on a fourth-and-one play. Bradshaw sparked the drive when, after fading to pass in his own end zone, he eluded a tackle by Mike McCoy and scampered 20 yards to the Pittsburgh 25. Bradshaw's passes of 10 and 11 yards to Ron Shanklin and a penalty moved the ball to the Packer 33, from where Bradshaw hit Smith with the winning touchdown. Green Bay, 0-2 under new Coach Dan Devine, had forged to a 13-9 lead on a three-yard touchdown run by Donny Anderson and field goals of 49 and 29 yards by Dale Livingston. Doug Hart gave the Packers a last chance when he picked off a Bradshaw pass with 1:35 left and returned it 19 yards to the Pittsburgh 45. But Frank Patrick threw three incomplete passes and then was run out of bounds when he tried to pass on fourth down.

(MILWAUKEE) - Scott Hunter passed 12 yards to John Hilton for a touchdown and Dave Conway kicked a 27-yard field goal Saturday night to lead the Packers over Miami. Conway's kick with 12:30 remaining provided the winning points as reserve quarterback John Stofa marched the Dolphins 65 yards in 11 plays to a seven-yard touchdown run by Hubert Ginn with 4.44 to play. The Dolphins, hampered by penalties, never got further than the Green Bay 38-yard line before that, as the Packers won their first game under new Coach Dan Devine. Hunter played most of the way and completed 10 of 22 passes for 104 yards. His touchdown pass to Hilton came with 46 seconds left in the first half. Hunter marched the Packers 40 yards in five plays, sparking the drive with 15 and six-yard passes to Dave Hampton. Ken Ellis returned a Miami punt 15 yards early in the fourth quarter to the Dolphins' 37. After a holding penalty stalled that drive, Conway kicked his field goal. Dale Livingston, Green Bay's regular place-kicker, earlier had missed field goal attempts from 42 and 39 yards.

August 28: Oakland 17, Green Bay (1-3) 13
(GREEN BAY) - Daryl Lamoniea made his first appearance of. the preseason for Oakland Saturday night and showed he had lost none of his opportunistic magic by passing the Raiders to the win. Lamonica broke the Packers' back with a 58-yard touchdown toss to Drew Buie midway in the second quarter and then led the Raiders downfield to a field goal with just 10 seconds to play in the half. The other Raiders touchdown came early .in the second quarter when rookie LB Greg Slough jumped on a John Brockington fumble in the Green Bay end zone. The only offense the Packers could manage against a tough Oakland defense was a pair of field goals by Dave Conway, both in the third quarter, and a touchdown on a 41-yard pass from Scott Hunter to Dave Davis with just seven seconds left. Lamonica completed only four of 11 passes for 99 yards. Ken Stabler, who played the rest of the game at quarterback, managed to control the ball with short, accurate passes.

September 10: Green Bay (2-4) 20, Buffalo 14
(BUFFALO) - Scott Hunter, a rookie quarterback from Alabama, may have earned a starting berth with Green Bay when the Packers open their season against the New York Giants a week from Sunday. Hunter took over from Zeke Bratkowski at the start of the second half against Buffalo Friday night and brought the Packers from behind for a 20-14 exhibition victory over the Bills. Hunter threw only six passes, but completed three for 86 yards. Two of the three were good for 39 and 31 yards. He engineered drives that set up two touchdowns by Dave Hampton and two field goals by Dave Conway.  Coach Dan Devine of the Packers said Hunter "has great leadership qualities" but wouldn't commit himself on the rookie starting against the Giants.

SECOND ROUND BUSTS
Prior to 2009, when the Packers cut QB Brian Brohm, one year after using a second-round choice on him, you would have to go back almost 40 years to find the last time the Packers released a 2nd-rounder this early in his career based on performance only.  In 1971, Dan Devine drafted RB Virgil Robinson of Grambling in the second round. He wanted him so bad, despite picking RB John Brockington in the first round, that he sent Travis Williams to the Rams for the draft pick. Robinson was tried as a running back, a wide receiver, and a defensive back, before the team released him the week before the regular season. Robinson would go on play 14 games with the Saints (101 yards rushing) before making a comeback with the WFL, where he ran for 550 yards with the Houston Texans and Shreveport Steamer.
More recently, the Packers parted with second-round draft picks after only one season four times, but they either traded the player or cut him because of a career-ending injury. In 2005, they drafted WR Terrence Murphy and released him the following April because of the neck injury that ended his career. In 1999, they drafted CB Fred Vinson then traded him in 2000 as part of the deal for running back Ahman Green. In 1992, they drafted LB Mark D’Onofrio, then cut him in 1993 because of a torn hamstring that ended his career. In 1975, they drafted OL Bill Bain, then traded him in 1976 for a third-round draft pick.
