St. Louis Cardinals (9-3-2) 24, Green Bay Packers (8-5-1) 17
(Miami) - The Cardinals’ Billy Gambrell had caught passes for 398 yards during the 1964 season, but the Playoff Bowl was to belong to him in 1965. Gambrell had a career day as he and Charley Johnson hooked up on touchdown passes of 80 and 10 yards and the Cardinals built a 17-3 third quarter lead. Jim Taylor tried to bring the Packers back, rushing for a pair of touchdowns. But, a Paul Hornung option pass was intercepted by Jimmy Burson at the goal line late in the game to preserve the St. Louis victory. On the day, Gambrell finished with 184 yards receiving on 6 catches. Green Bay was only able to gain 131 total yards from scrimmage on the day. The Packers got on the board first on a 40 yard field goal by Paul Hornung in the first quarter. In the second quarter Gambrell caught his 80 yard touchdown reception from Charley Johnson to give the Cards a 7-3 halftime advantage. The Cardinals extended their lead to 17-3 in the 3rd quarter off Jim Bakken's eight yard field goal and Gambrell's ten yard touchdown reception from Johnson. The final St. Louis score came on a 4th
September 13: Green Bay Packers (1-0) 25, Chicago Bears (0-1) 12
(GREEN BAY) - Paul Hornung booted three field goals, one on a free kick under a seldom-used rule, and Bart Starr tossed two touchdown passes as the Packers belted the Chicago Bears 23-12. Hornung, the slightly-tarnished "Golden Boy" who sat out last season under suspension for gambling on games, played a key role as the Packers launched their bid to regain the NFL title from the defending champion Bears. The former Notre Dame star's running and passing threat on the halfback option upset the vaunted defense which led the Bears to two victories over the Packers en route to the championship last year. The Packers roared for a touchdown the second time they had possession of the ball in the first period. The running of Hornung and Jim Taylor set up big gaining passes by Starr.

September 20: Baltimore Colts (1-1) 21, Green Bay Packers (1-1) 20
(GREEN BAY) - Green Bay Coach Vince Lornbardi, a conservative strategist on the football field, took an unusual gamble. It's doubtful he'll do it again. Lombardi's strategy, conceived with Bart Starr during the officials final two-minute warning, backfired as the Packers dropped a 21-20 decision to the Baltimore Colts. "I called it," Lombardi said glumly after Starr's pass was intercepted by Colt linebacker Don Shinnick on the first play after the time out. The Green Bay field boss, who also doubles in brass as general manager, refused to elaborate on the crucial play. However, in a sense, he described it in another manner. "We threw the ball game away," Lombardi said". Lombardi couldn't be blamed for the turn of events which dropped the Packers into a Western Conference tie with Baltimore with 1-1 records. Foiled by a pass interception by the Colts' Jerry Logan after driving to the Baltimore 28 early in the final period, the Packers forced a kick and stormed right back. With a first down on the Colt 32, Starr was blitzed, but managed to get to the line of scrimmage. Then Starr kept for one yard to the 31 and the officials called time to give the two-minute warning. Green Bay scoring ace Paul Hornung scored touchdowns on runs of 20 and four yards, but shared the goat's role. Hornung missed the second of his three extra point attempts, spelling the difference in the final outcome. The Colts scored all their points in the first half, then dug in to withstand the Packers' charge in the final half. This would be Jerry Kramer's last game before undergoing abdominal surgery.

September 28: Green Bay Packers (2-1) 14, Detroit Lions (1-1-1) 10
(DETROIT) - The Packers took advantage of a lethargic Detroit Lion defense on a Monday night to grind out a 14-10 decision before the largest pro football crowd in Detroit history. The Packers showed the power of their defensive unit in holding the Lions to a field goal for the first 56 minutes. The Lions marched 80 yards to score their lone touchdown with 3:59 to play on a 16-yard Earl Morrall pass to Pat Studstill. The Lions held the Packers on downs and forced a punt, gaining control with 1:57 to play on their own 32, but Studslill fumbled a pass and Hank Gremminger recovered at the Green Bay 49 to wrap up the victory. All the Packers scoring occurred in the second quarter as Bart Starr solved the Detroit defense with some accurate passing and shifty running. Starr sat out most of the second half and Zeke Bratkowski ran the Green Bay offense that was about as effective as the Lions'. The Packers took a 14-3 halftime lead by marching 47 and 58 yards to score touchdowns in the second quarter. After a Detroit punt early in the period, the Packers scored their first TD in four plays, a 40-yard Starr-to-Paul Hornung pass to the Detroit four highlighting the march.

(GREEN BAY) - Fran Tarkenton hit Gordy Smith with a 44-yard pass on 4th-and-22, leading to Fred Cox's game-winning field goal with 18 seconds left as Minnesota beat Green Bay for the first time ever. The Vikings gained their victory margin over Green Bay when Rip Hawkins blocked Paul Hornung's attempted placement kick after the Packers' first touchdown in the second period. Hornung, who plunged over for Green Bay's second TD just before halftime, added a 20-yard field goal with less than five minutes to play to give the Packers a 23-21 lead.

October 11: Green Bay Packers (3-2) 24, San Francisco 49ers (2-3) 14
(MILWAUKEE) - The Green Bay Packers, powered by the running of fullback Jim Taylor and an electrifying 42-yard punt return by Willie Wood, came from behind in the final period to score a 24-14 victory over the upsetminded San Francisco 49ers. Taylor, who sat out last week's game with an injured shoulder, ran for 133 yards and two touchdowns, his second on a 27-yard run pulling the Packers from a 14-10 deficit to a three-point lead. The 49ers, with quarterback John Brodie leading the way, had moved out to a 7-0 lead in the second quarter on Mike Lind's one-yard plunge. The Packers tied it at halftime on Taylor's first score and took a 10-7 lead midway through the third period on Paul Hornung's 21-yard field goal. But the 49ers drove right back 75 yards to take the lead again with Brodie rolling out one yard for the score. The fourth quarter was only four plays old when Taylor broke off right tackle on his 27-yard touchdown run. The play culminated a 58-yard drive which started on the first play of the period. Midway through the fourth period, Wood ran a Tommy Davis punt back to the 49er 25-yard line to set up the insurance score on a eight-yard pass from Bart Starr to Boyd Dowler. An exchange of fumbles immediately preceded the touchdown with Dave Wilcox recovering Taylor's fumble and Dave Hanner recovering a Brodie miscue. Taylor's total yardage pushed him into third place in the NFL's alltime totals ahead of Steve Van Buren of the Philadelphia Eagles. Van Buren picked up 5,860 yards for the Eagles between 1944 and 1951. Taylor has now gained 5,959 since joining
Green Bay in 1958. Davis, with two extra points, extended his NFL consecutive kicking streak to 169 points after touchdown. Hornung, who suffered a pinched nerve midway through the second quarter, did not return to action as a runner and sat the bench while Wood kicked the Packers' first conversion.

(BALTIMORE) - Lenny Moore's second touchdown of the game on a five-yard run with one minute to play earned the Baltimore Colts a 24-21 victory over the Green Bay Packers. The come-from-behind victory by the Western Division leaders, their second over Green Bay this season, was set up on a 36-yard runback on a blocked field goal attempt by Paul Hornung. Jerry Logan picked off the errant kick, which was deflected by tackle Billy Ray Smith on the Colt 30, and returned it to the Packer 34. It took the Colts four plays to go the rest of the way, with Moore bulling over from the five. Moore scored his first TD in the third period on a 20-yard run. Hornung had one of his poorest days in years as a field goal kicker, missing on five attempts, including the blocked kick. The close battle saw the Packers go in front 21-17 early in the final period on a brilliant 65-yard punt return by Elijah Pitts. Green Bay held a 14-7 halftime advantage on a 16-yard run by Jim Taylor and a 42-yard pass play from Bart Starr to Max McGee. The Colts had opened the scoring on a four-yard plunge by Tony Lorick. The Colts came back in the third period to take a 17-14 lead on a 40-yard field goal by Lou Michaels and Moore's scoring scamper. The Packers scored their first two touchdowns by captalizing on Colt miscues. Both touchdowns came within four minutes in the second period.

October 25: Los Angeles Rams (4-2-1) 27, Green Bay Packers (3-4) 17
(MILWAUKEE) - The Los Angeles Rams, sparked by the running of rookie Les Josephson and a ''fearsome foresome" defensive forward wall, struck three times from long range to upset the Green Bay Packers, 27-17. Josephson, the game's leading ball carrier with 90 yards in 10 carries, brought the Rams to life toward the end of the second period when, with the Packers leading 17-0, he took a handoff from Roman Gabriel and swept left end for 53 yards and a touchdown. Within two minutes, Gabriel collaborated with rookie Bucky Pope on a 55 yard pass play and the Rams were only three points behind at halftime. A 94-yard return of a partially blocked field goal attempt by Bobby Smith put the Rams ahead midway through the third period and field goals of 37 and 43 yards by rookie Bruce Gossett capped the Rams' scoring. The Packers, led by the running of Paul Hornung and the passing of Bart Starr, took their early lead largely because of breaks - and the score could have been ever more if Green Bay had been able to take advantage of all of its opportunities. The Rams dominated not only the scoring but the statistics as well, picking up 161 yards rushing to 119 for the Packers, and 121 yards passing to only 60 for Green Bay. The Rams averaged 5.6 yards a play, and Green Bay only 2.8. Jim Taylor was held to 31 yards rushing in 13 carries.

(MINNESOTA) - Green Bay, bent on soothing its wounds from four defeats, rode a three-touchdown second quarter barrage to a 42-13 victory over Minnesota before a record crowd of 44,278. Bart Starr threw two touchdown passes each to Max McGee and Jim Taylor to lead the Packers' romp over the Vikings. Starr, who wound up with 12-for-17 and 186 yards, combined with McGee for scoring aerials of 22 and 45 yards and with
Taylor for payoff tosses of 35 and 10. Taylor also banged out 118 yards rushing - 46 more than the whole

(GREEN BAY) - The Green Bay Packers, striking from long range and taking advantage of their best defensive performance in two years, threw a serious crimp in Detroit's title hopes by handing the Lions a 30-7 licking. Jim Taylor scored on runs of one and 84 yards and gained 145 yards on 19 carries and Paul Hornung kicked field goals of 40, 19 and 34 yards for the Packers, who held the Lions to 50 yards rushing. The Lions didn't score their touchdown until the fourth period when Milt Plum passed 23 yards to Gail Cogdill. Bart Starr completed 14 of 20 passes for 217 yards for the Packers.

(SAN FRANCISCO) - Rookie quarterback George Mira, aided by an alert San Francisco defense that set up all the points led the Forty Niners to an upset 24-14 victory over the Green Bay Packers. Mira, getting his first test as a starter in pro ball, went the full distance and his top contribution was to engineer a 39-yard touchdown march. However, he kept the Green Bay defense off balance with his pass-run option plays. Bart Starr was injured early in the second quarter and the Green Bay offense wasn't able to click under the guidance of Zeke Bratkowski. Green Bay was given the ball four times on fumbles, two by Mira, but wasn't able to cash in even with a field goal as Paul Hornung missed from 43, 38, 35 and 27 yards.

November 22: Green Bay Packers (6-5) 28, Cleveland Browns (8-2-1) 21
(MILWAUKEE) - With their conference title hopes gones, the Packers turned gamblers behind Bart Starr, to upend the Eastern Conference leading Cleveland Browns, 28-21, before a record Wisconsin pro football crowd. The loss cut the Browns' lead over the St. Louis Cardinals to a game and a half with three games to play. The Browns had taken a 14-7 lead behind the running of Jim Brown and the receiving of Paul Warfield in the first quarter and made it stand up until just after the second half started. Then, with the Packers in possession on their own 44 and facing a fourth down and inches situation, Starr dropped back and tossed a short pass to Max McGee, who raced all the way to the one to set up Jim Taylor's game-clinching scoring run a play later.

(DALLAS) - Bart Starr passed for three touchdowns and ran for one and the Green Bay defense intercepted three passes and picked up two fumbles for touchdowns as the Packers lashed the Dallas Cowboys 45-21. It was one of the worst defeats for the Cowboys in their five years in the National Football League and was viewed by the second best crowd of the season. Green Bay ran up a 17-0 lead before Dallas could score, first driving 47 yards after a short Billy Lothridge punt, with Jim Taylor running for 17 yards and Elijah Pitts 17 and Starr passing to Boyd Dowler for six and a touchdown. Then Ray Nltichke intercepted a pass from Lothridge, filling in for the injured Don Meredith, and set up a 15-yard field goal by Paul Hornung. Henry Jordan and Lionel Aldridge both returned fumbles for touchdowns. Jordan's 60-yard return was a Packer record until George Cumby had a 68-yard fumble return in 1981.

December 5: Green Bay Packers (8-5) 17, Chicago Bears (5-8) 3
(CHICAGO) - Willie Wood set up all the Green Bay Packer scores in a Saturday afternoon game on two long punt returns and a clutch interception for a 17-3 victory over the Bears. Paul Hornung, having one of his better games in a disappointing season, and Jim Taylor, who became the first man in National Football League history to run for more than 1,000 yards each of five consecutive seasons, scored the points. But it was Wood who put the Packers into scoring territory, dashing through the frustrated Bear defenders for their two touchdowns and a field goal. He started the Packers on their way in the second quarter when he took a Bobby Joe Green punt and bolted down the sideline almost unmolested until he was caught from behind on the Bear 16. Hornung took it over from the five, falling into the end rone four plays later. Wood was at it again in the third quarter when he gathered in Green's punt on the Packer 45 and dashed through the middle of the Bear defenders 42 yards to the Bear 13. On the next play Taylor put his head down and ripped through for the touchdown. Later in the same period, Chicago had a chance to score but Wood intercepted a Bill Wade pass on the Packer 26 and came charging back 28 yards to the Bear 46. The Chicago defense held on the two. So Hornung stepped back and kicked a nine-yard field goal which wound up the scoring. Wade, the forgotten man of the Bears, came off the bench to quarterback when Rudy Bukich was injured late in the second quarter and helped Chicago to its only score of the game. Wade's passing got the Bears down to the Packer 15 but a penalty forced them back and Roger LeClerc kicked a 31-yard field goal with only seconds to play in the first half. Bukich went out when he tried to run deep in his own territory, tripped over Bear end Mike Ditka and injured his shoulder. Late in the game the Bear fans got most of their fun by pelting the Packers with snowballs.

December 13: Green Bay Packers (8-5-1) 24, Los Angeles Rams (5-7-2) 24 (Tie)
(LOS ANGELES) - The Packers tied Los Angeles 24-24 and deadlocked Minnesota for second place in the West but won the Playoff Bowl berth because they outscored the Vikings in their two meetings this season. Bart Starr broke a league record on the final day of the season, completing 26 passes without an interception for a string of 225 in a row without a steal. The old record of 208 was set by Milt Plum in 1959-60. Starr hit Boyd Dowler with a five-yard touchdown pass to start a 14-point fourth quarter against the Rams, then Jim Taylor got the tie with a yard plunge. The big play for Los Angeles was a 95-yard pass from Bill Munson to Bucky Pope.

1964 IN REVIEW: The Green Bay Packers had become a mediocre team. Two losses by a single point, nagging injuries, the loss of offensive lineman Jerry Kramer and Paul Hornung's struggles as kicker following a one-year layoff left the Packers at 3-4 at the midway point of the season. After a loss to the Rams in Week 7, Vince Lombardi held a closed-door meeting with his players in the lockerroom. Green Bay turned their season around with a 5-1-1 finish to end up tied for second in the Western Conference with the surprising Minnesota Vikings. Green Bay's defense, the best in the NFL, recovered a league-high 25 of the 34 fumbles they forced. Meanwhile, the Packer running game remained tops in the NFL, and Bart Starr did not throw an interception in the final eleven games. Added all together, the Green Bay Packers were a better team than their 8-5-1 record indicated, and their fling with mediocrity would be brief.

Hornung got to lug the ball five times, picking up 29 yards. He tried a field goal from the 26 early in the first stanza, but it was wide. One of the key St. Louis defenders was former Louisiana State All-America Jerry Stovall, starting his second year as a pro. He picked off a Bart Starr pass midway in the first period and returned it 24 yards to set up the first Cardinal score, a 24-yard field goal by Jim Bakken. Bakken added another field goal from the 37-yard stripe in the second quarter Sticking to the ground most of the way, Green Bay moved for its only score just before intermission.
