1963 IN REVIEW: One team kept Green Bay from a fourth consecutive Western Conference title and a shot at a third straight NFL championship - the hated Chicago Bears. The Packers only lost twice during the season, giving them a 3-year record of 35-6-1, but both losses came to Chicago. At the end of the season, the Bears finished one-half game ahead of the Packers. Green Bay was hurt by the loss of Paul Hornung, who was suspended for the season due to gambling issues. The Packer running game dropped to second in the league behind Cleveland. Defensively, Green Bay was second to the Bears, and allowed a league-low nine touchdown passes. Only the Giants scored more points, and only Chicago allowed fewer on defense. When the season ended, Green Bay had the third best winning percentage in NFL history for a team not to make the playoffs since the format was adopted in 1933.
Green Bay Packers (11-2-1) 40, Cleveland Browns (10-4) 23
(MIAMI) - When the season ended, Green Bay had the third best winning percentage in NFL history for a team not to make the playoffs since the format was adopted in 1933. The Packers were favored in the Playoff Bowl and would not disappoint. They easily handled the Browns, 40 to 23. Green Bay was led by Tom Moore, who had two touchdowns, including a 99-yard pass reception from Bart Starr. The pass completion tied an NFL record for longest completion in history. Unfortunately, the statistics from exhibition games are not included in the permanent NFL record annals. The record is currently shared by 9 individuals, including the Packers’ Robert Brooks (Sept. 11, 1995). Bart Starr was voted MVP of the game as he completed 15 of 18 passes for 259 yards. The Browns' Frank Ryan completed 18 of 28 for 310 yards and two touchdowns in the losing effort.

September 15: Chicago Bears (1-0) 10, Green Bay Packers (0-1) 3
(GREEN BAY) - "They beat us." Jim Ringo said it, the first time such a phrase had been uttered in a Green Bay Packer home dressing room in three years. "We had nothing going," said Coach Vince Lombardi. "We couldn't even get our hands on the ball. We were lucky to get away 10-3." That was the score by which the Chicago Bears upended the mighty Packers in the surprise of the day as the National Football League got off to its 44th season. The powerful Packers, gunning for a third straight league title and beaten only once last season, never got untracked against the Bears' crushing defense. The Bears picked off four Bart Starr passes, limited the Packer quarterback to 11 completions in 22 attempts for 73 yards and held the vaunted Packer ground game to 77 yards, 53 in 12 attempts by Jim Taylor. Tom Moore had 24 in nine. The Bears' Bob Jencks kicked a 32-yard field goal and Jerry Kramer matched it from 41, both in the first quarter. The Bears broke the tie in the third period with Billy Wade directing a 68-yard march and passing them into position on the one. Joe Marconi rammed over from there.

September 22: Green Bay Packers (1-1) 31, Detroit Lions (1-1) 10
(MILWAUKEE) - Tom Moore's apprentice days are ended. No longer an understudy, the former Vanderbilt flash is bidding for National Football League stardom as a replacement for suspended Paul Hornung. Moore, the Packers' top draft choice in 1961, scored twice on jaunts of 15 and 77 yards as the defending NFL champions rebounded from an upset by the Bears and belted the Detroit Lions, 31-10. Moore pulled the Packers out of danger with his 15-yard dash around end after the Lions had cut the deficit to 10-3. Then, with the score 17-10, he broke through the left side, spun and twisted out of the grasps of two tacklers on his 42 and went on his 77-yard jaunt in the fourth quarter. For the day, he gained 122 yards on 17 carries. The Packers overpowered the Lions with a tremendous defense which surrendered a total of 147 yards grudgingly. The Lions managed to complete only six of 26 passes including one desperation scoring toss which covered 23 yards.

September 29: Green Bay Packers (2-1) 31, Baltimore Colts (1-2) 20
(GREEN BAY) - Bart Starr turned a fumble into a 35-yard scoring pass to Boyd Dowler on the first play of the final quarter and the Packers rallied for a 31-20 victory over the Baltimore Colts. Held scoreless in the first half by an alert Baltimore defense, the Packers caught fire in the final two quarters and rolled. The Packers couldn't get started, while Johnny Unitas was having one of his good days, but Green Bay finally went ahead on a messed up line play that turned into a 35-yard scoring pass. The Packers, trailing 17-14, had third down and four on the Colt 35 as the fourth quarter opened. The ball was fumbled in the backfield on an intended end sweep and bounced around on the Colt 45. Starr found it and threw it to Boyd Dowler on the 25. He trotted over for the touchdown. Jim Taylor, who carried 16 times for 72 yards, sat out most of the second half for Green Bay with a right leg injury, although he returned to action at the end.

October 6: Green Bay Packers (3-1) 42, Los Angeles Rams (0-4) 10
(GREEN BAY) - Herb Adderley returned the opening kickoff 93 yards on a brilliant scoring jaunt and set the tempo as the Packers humbled the Los Angeles Rams 42-10. The Packers, still smarting from an opening loss to the undefeated Chicago Bears, wore down the Rams in 84-degree heat. The Rams managed to sting the pride of Green Bay's awesome defense by rolling 76 yards in nine plays to tie the count in the sixth minute of play, but then the Packers took charge. On the final play of the opening period, Willie Davis and Bill Forester broke through and dropped Ram quarterback Roman Gabriel in the end zone for a safety and the Packers were in front to stay. The Packers broke the game wide open after the intermission with 20 points in the third period and another seven in the final.

(MINNESOTA) - The Vikings, trailing the Packers 30-14 in the final period, narrowed that gap to two points. Fran Tarkenton passed 29 yards to Paul Flatley for one touchdown and then set up Bill Brown's one yard touchdown plunge with two minutes remaining. Herb Adderley then saved the day, by blocking a potential game-winning field goal try by Fred Cox with less than two minutes to play. Hank Gremminger picked up the loose ball and ran 80 yards for a clinching touchdown as the Packers won, 37-28. Bart Starr passed for 253 yards and two touchdowns in the win.

October 20: Green Bay Packers (5-1) 30, St. Louis Cardinals (4-2) 7
(ST. LOUIS) - The Green Bay Packers scored the first five times they had the ball and stormed past the St. Louis Cardinals, 30-7, in a game marked with roughing penalties. The Packers lost quarterback Bart Starr on a hand injury late in the third quarter after a fist-swinging incident in which Cardinal DB Jimmy Hill was ejected. John Roach replaced him for the rest of the game. Jerry Kramer kicked field goals of 39, 26 and 34 yards, and Tom Moore and Jim Taylor each scored from one yard out for Green Bay. Then after the Cardinals connected on a 40-yard pass play from Charley Johnson to Bobby Joe Conrad late in the third period, Taylor plunged another yard for the final score. The game was played before 32,224, the largest ever to see a regular season Cardinal game in St. Louis. The Packers outgained the Cardinals, which led the league in offense, 238 yards to 58 and had a 14-3 bulge in first downs in the first half.

October 27: Green Bay Packers (6-1) 34, Baltimore Colts (3-4) 20
(BALTIMORE) - Elijah Pitts, one of two substitutes in the backfield, raced 34 yards for a touchdown late in the fourth quarter to give the Green Bay Packers a 34-20 victory over the Baltimore Colts. Pitts was playing for Tom Moore, who was inactivated with a pinched nerve in his neck. His touchdown run, set up with a great block by guard Fuzzy Thurston, broke a 20-20 tie which the Colts had forged on 17 points in the last half. Jim Taylor added a 17-yard run after the Colts failed to make a first down on their 20 when Henry Jordan brought down Johnny Unitas in his tracks. John Roach, playing for the injured Bart Starr, kept the Packers moving and threw an 11-yard touchdown pass to Marv Fleming, filling in for Ron Kramer who hurt a knee early in the first half. Fleming's touchdown, Taylor's first TD on a plunge and a 46-yard field goal by Jerry Kramer provided Green Bay with a 17-3 halftime lead. During the wild second quarter, the Packers lost fumbles on the Colt 5 and 3. They intercepted two passes and recovered a Colt fumble. The Colts, who could make only two first downs in the first half, came to life in the third quarter and scored a touchdown in six plays covering 80 yards. Unitas threw 13 yards to Lenny Moore to reduce the score to 20-10. Jim Martin made it 20-13 with his second field goal after the Colts were denied a chance for a touchdown when Unitas was penalized for intentionally grounding the ball. The Colts tied the score on a 48-yard pass play, John Mackey making a spectacular overhead catch. After Jordan blocked an attempted 47-yard field goal by Martin, the Packers were moved into winning position for Pitts' run by a pass interference call against Lenny Lyles on Max McGee. Roach completed nine passes in 20 attempts for 156 yards and one touchdown. He had two passes intercepted.

November 3: Green Bay Packers (7-1) 33, Pittsburgh Steelers (4-3-1) 14
(MILWAUKEE) - Green Bay punished Pittsburgh's defense with a bruising ground game powered by Jim Taylor and set up four field goals by Jerry Kramer in belting the Steelers, 33-14. Taylor, the 1962 rushing and scoring king, bulled his way for one touchdown and 141 yards in 30 carries as the Packers kept pace with the Chicago Bears, each with 7-1 records. Kramer, an All-NFL choice as an offensive guard, booted field goals from 23, 36, 12 and 23 yards out when Green Bay drives stalled. He also contributed four conversions. Elijah Pitts
scored two touchdowns in spelling Tom Moore on brief occasions for the Packers. Pitts tallied on a two-yard burst in the third period and on a one-yard plunge with less than two minutes remaining. The Steelers stung the Packers with a touchdown after 11 seconds of play. Gary Ballman returned the opening kickoff 93 yards to the Green Bay two and Dick Hoak hit left guard for a touchdown on the initial play from scrimmage. The Packers then took charge but the best they could do was add three field goals by Kramer before halftime. Kramer booted his fourth field goal at the outset of the final quarter before the Steelers managed their other touchdown.

November 10: Green Bay Packers (8-1) 28, Minnesota Vikings (3-6) 7
(GREEN BAY) - John Roach rallied a sluggish Green Bay offense and passed for three touchdowns as the Packers defeated the upstart Minnesota Vikings 28-7. Roach, making the most of his starting status while Bart Starr recuperates from a broken hand, fired scoring strikes to Marv Fleming, Boyd Dowler and Tom Moore as the Packers posted their eighth straight victory. The triumph set the stage for a showdown between the Packers and the Bears at Chicago for the Western Division lead next Sunday. The Bears defeated the Packers in the season opener. Minnesota scored on an 18-yard pass from Fran Tarkenton to Paul Flatley in the first period and checked the Packers until Hank Gremminger picked off a pass and returned to the Viking 39 in the second quarter. On the ninth play Roach passed to Fleming, subbing for the injured Ron Kramer, for a 12-yard scoring play. With their ground attack stifled by the inspired Minnesota defense, the Packers took to the air at the outset of the second half and moved 83 yards in six plays to go in front to stay. Roach passed to Dowler for 49 yards for the big gainer and then hit his lanky flankerback for 20 yards to cap the drive. Roach passed to Moore on a 45-yard maneuver for another touchdown in the 11th minute of the final quarter before retiring. Zeke Bratkowski, obtained on waivers from Los Angeles two weeks ago, then made his Green Bay debut at quarterback. The Vikings surrendered the ball at their 21 when Tarkenton was dropped trying to pass on fourth down. And five plays later Bratkowski passed 10 yards to Moore in the end zone.

November 17: Chicago Bears (9-1) 26, Green Bay Packers (8-2) 7
(CHICAGO) - The supercharged Chicago Bears rode a crunching ground game and Roger LeClerc's four field goals to a 26-7 humiliation of the defending National Football League champion Green Bay Packers. The Bears, with LeClerc trying seven field goals in all, were far more impressive than their season-opening 10-3 triumph at Green Bay. Not only did the vaunted Bear defense almost completely throttle Green Bay's vaunted offense, but Chicago played almost a perfect offensive game with the running of Willie Galimore and Rick Casares spear-heading ripping thrusts through the Packer defense. Galimore ran 27 yards for a touchdown in a 13-point Bear first quarter which set the tempo before a roaring Wrigley field crowd of 49,166. In addition to the 12 points by Leclerc's field goals of 29, 46, 19 and 39 yards, the Bear scoring was wrapped up in the final period on Bill Wade's five-yard scoot after a 44-yard pass interception by Bennie McRae. The outplayed Packers, who had five passes intercepted and fumbled away the ball three times, finally scored with 4:10 left on Tom Moore's 11-yard run. The Bears played a brilliant ball-control game. The Packers stuck with John Roach until it became obvious the erstwhile able replacement of Bart Starr, was helpless against the hard-rushing Bears. Roach connected only eight times on 20 passes for 92 yards and two interceptions. Zeke Bratkowski, former Bear, entered the game late in the third period with the Packers trailing, 16-0, but couldn't get Green Bay rolling.

(MILWAUKEE) - The Green Bay Packers welcomed the return of Bart Starr from the injured ranks and belted the San Francisco 49ers 28-10 with a high-powered first half attack. The Packers marched 82 yards with the opening kickoff for a touchdown and then added 21 points in the second period before easing up in the second half. Starr, sidelined with a broken hand since October 20, passed 11 yards to Boyd Dowler for the initial touchdown. He was a master strategist in engineering the three scoring drives in the second quarter.

November 28: Green Bay Packers (9-2-1) 13, Detroit Lions (4-7-1) 13 (Tie)
(DETROIT) - The Green Bay Packers suffered another shattering loss in their traditional Thanksgiving Day game with the Detroit Lions Thursday, but this time it wasn't the game. The favored Packers, who were blitzed a year ago in the holiday game, were tied by the fired-up Lions, 13-13, in the final 16 seconds. But in the process, the Packers lost their standout middle linebacker, Ray Nitschke, who broke a bone in his right forearm in the fourth period. Nitschke's injury wasn't believed serious after the game, but X-rays taken when the team returned to Green Bay revealed the fracture that sidelined him for the season. The ailing Lion defense, which gave up 28 points to Los Angeles and 34 to Minnesota in its last two games, was keyed up for the Packer 'game and bolstered by the return of Dick Lane and Yale Lary to the defensive backfield even though they were still slightly hampered by injuries. The defense dominated throughout as the clubs played to a 6-6 halftime tie and then traded touchdowns in the final period. Bart Starr tossed a seven-yard pass to Ron Kramer for the TD to put the Packers ahead, 13-6, with 9:07 remaining in the game. Lion quarterback Earl Morrall then directed a slow but steady 78-yard drive that was climaxed when Nick Pietrosante leaped over from the one-foot line on fourth down with 16 seconds left. The Lions' ability to move on key third down plays and a pass interference call on Jesse Whittenton on the goal line were the key factors in the drive.

December 7: Green Bay Packers (10-2-1) 31, Los Angeles Rams (5-8) 14
(LOS ANGELES) - Bart Starr threw three touchdown passes to Max McGee to pace the Green Bay Packers to a come-from behind 31-14 win over the Los Angeles Rams. The Rams delighted the crowd of 52,337 by grabbing a halftime lead of 14-10. But in the third quarter, Jim Taylor, who had been held to 23 yards in the first half, broke through the Ram line on a draw play and bobbed and weaved 40 yards to a touchdown. Jerry Kramer's conversion put the Packers out in front 17-14 and the Rams seemed to fall apart after that. Green Bay opened the scoring in the first period on a 25-yard pass from Starr to McGee, who fooled the Ram defenders all afternoon. Carver Shannon took the ensuing kickoff on a 55-yard run back after he appeared to have been stopped in a pileup on the Ram 22. He was finally run out of bounds on the Packers' 39-yard line and nine plays later Dick Bass went over from the three for a touchdown. The Rams went out in front 14-7 midway in the second quarter when Roman Gabriel engineered a 74-yard, nine-play touchdown march that included a 43-yard pass to Ben Wilson. Gabriel rammed the ball over himself from the one-yard line. Kramer kicked a 40-yard field goal to end the first half scoring. After Taylor's touchdown run in the third quarter, Starr hit McGee with a 16-yard six-pointer, and in the fourth quarter connected to McGee on a 13-yard touchdown play. In the fourth quarter, the Rams' Eddie Meador blocked a Kramer field goal attempt from the 46-yard line, but Packer Jim Ringo recovered the free ball on the Ram 25. Taylor bounced up the middle for 12 yards and then Starr threw his 13-yarder to McGee.

December 14: Green Bay Packers (11-2-1) 21, San Francisco 49ers (2-12) 17
(SAN FRANCISCO) - The Green Bay Packers kept their championship hopes alive with a long-bomb attack that edged the San Francisco Forty Niners, 21-17. Green Bay defeated the Niners in a Saturday afternoon game at Kezar Stadium, but could not catch the Bears as they won over Detroit the following afternoon at Soldier Field. Fought to a standstill on the ground by an aroused Forty Niner defense, the Packers took to the air for the victory. Bart Starr found Boyd Dowler behind the San Francisco secondary with passes that were good for 53 and 50 yard touchdowns. That spelled the difference. The Packers had marched 78 yards to a score the first time they got the ball with Tom Moore piling over from the one. But the Forty Niners came back with an 80-yard ground drive of their own featuring J. D. Smith and the veteran Joe Perry. The score came when Smith piled over from the two. On the ensuing kickoff, Green Bay fumbled and San Francisco recovered on the Packer 23. When this Niner attack stalled on the 15 for some unaccountable reason, the Forty Niners decided to try for a touchdown on fourth down instead of going for a field goal that would have given them a 10-7 lead. Two minutes after the Packers got the ball, Starr faked and then hit Dowler with his first touchdown bomb. San Francisco came right back to knot the count at 14-14 when Smith broke over tackle and went 52 yards to score. Starr's next bomb to Dower came in the third quarter and put the Packers ahead to stay. Tommy Davis, who tied the league record of 156 consecutive converions with his points after on the second San Francisco touchdown, kicked a 44-yard field goal in the last quarter. Jim Taylor gained 59 yards for Green Bay to bring his total for the season to 1,010 yards — the fourth consecutive year in which he has gained 1,000 or more.

August 2: College All-Stars 20, Green Bay Packers (0-1) 17
(CHICAGO) - All-Star coach Otto Graham basked in the applause due a winner today, but the eventual winners from Friday night's collegiate win over the Green Bay Packers probably will be the Minnesota Vikings, the Chicago Bears and the Washington Redskins. The Vikings have tide to All-Star quarterback Ron VanderKelen, the Bears to place-kicking, pass-catching end Bob Jencks and the Redskins to pass-catcher Pat Richter. They were the key men in the Stars' triumph, an upset scored by a two-touchdown underdog team that ignored the odds, and even Packer coach Vince Lombardi complimented his conquerors. "We wanted to ran," he said,"but they wouldn't let us, I thought we were up, but we just went flat. I expected them to play a fine game and they did." Vanderkelen, who played about 75 per cent of the game on offense, completed eight of 10 passes, one of them for 21 yards to Richter, his Wisconsin teammate, to set up a five-yard touchdown run by Iowa's Larry Ferguson, and another for 73 yards to Richter for the clinching touchdown. But VanderKelen's other throws kept the Packer defense off balance to set up ground gains of 141 yards, and when the offense stalled, Jencks took over. He kicked field goals of 20 and 33 yards in addition to the point after both touchdowns.

August 10: Green Bay Packers (1-1) 27, Pittsburgh Steelers 7
(MIAMI) - The Green Bay Packers scored in three plays and went on from there to whip the Pittsburgh Steelers in an exhibition game before 26,577 fans in the Orange Bowl last night. The Packers used their bench and superb defense to handcuff the Steelers. Tom Moore, replacing suspended Paul Hornung, scored Green Bay's first touchdown and set up the second score, a field goal, with a 33-yard sprint to the Steeler five. Green Bay outgained the Steelers, 108 to 60 yards rushing and 270 to 133

August 17: Green Bay Packers (2-1) 31, Dallas Cowboys 10
(DALLAS) - As far as Dallas football fans are concerned, the Green Bay Packers haven't changed unless it's for the better. The same old tough defense, the hard running, the strong passing, and the opportunism of the two-time NFL champions greeted a crowd of 53,121 Saturday night in the Cotton Bowl. The Packers beat the Cowboys for the third straight year in an exhibition. The score was 31-10, not as wide a margin as the previous two years but more impressive in view of the fact that Dallas obviously has a better team and had really expected to give the Packers a good ball game. Several questions were answered. Jim Taylor had been favoring an injured knee. He said the knee hurt a little in the game with the Cowboys but it couldn't be detected the way the big guy ran with the ball. He carried 12 times for 86 yards, an average of 7.2. There was no evidence that Paul Hornung was being missed. His replacement, Tom Moore, ran 11 times for 70 yards and once got off an option pass for 17 yards to show he could do everything Hornung could do. yards passing.

August 24: Green Bay Packers (3-1) 26, Chicago Bears 7
(MILWAUKEE) - The mighty Green Bay Packers, tuning up in hopes of a third straight title, survived a sputtering start and overpowered the Chicago Bears 26-7 Saturday night before a packed crowd of 44,592 in the 14th annual Midwest Shrine game. Unable to get rolling, the Packers spotted the Bears a 7-6 halftime lead and then rallied for seven points in the third period and 13 in the finale in pulling away to their 21st straight exhibition triumph over NFL rivals.

September 2: Green Bay Packers (4-1) 24, New York Giants 17
(GREEN BAY) - Throw a lion and a tiger into the same arena and there's sure to be
action. It's the same when the Green Bay Packers and the New York Giants square off, whether in an exhibition or National Football League title showdown. The Packers came out on the short end of a wild second period, but then settled down and pulled out a victory over the Giants Monday night in a rugged duel before a packed crowd of 42,327 at City Stadium. The largest turnout in Green Bay history expected a repeat performance of the Packers' triumph over the Giants in the NFL championship game. The hometown fans weren't disappointed as both teams acted as if they were playing for $5,000 per man instead of the pre-season rate of $50 a game. A 100-yard return of a kickoff by the Packers' Herb Adderley and a 91- yard maneuver on which Jim Patton intercepted a pass and lateraled to Dick Lynch for a New York touchdown featured the fantastic second period.

September 7: Green Bay Packers (5-1) 28, Washington Redskins 17
(CEDAR RAPIDS, IA) - The Green Bay Packers needed lightning-bolt touchdown strikes of 83 and 80 yards Saturday night to show the Washington Redskins who is boss in the NFL. The Packers thrilled a crowd of 13,500 in Kingston Stadium by coming from behind with two fourth-period scores to win their final preseason game. But the Pack, winners of five straight since their upset by the College All-Stars, will have to look sharper than they did in the first three quarters if they hope to stay unbeaten long in the NFL Western Division race that opens next Sunday against the Bears in Green Bay. They fumbled away the ball four times and averaged only 30 yards on three punts. The sponsoring West Side Civic club again enjoyed a perfect September evening. This was the largest crowd in the series of four pro football promotions, and it insured a sizeable profit for local charities, youth and athletic projects. Many of the fans couldn't resist pulling for an upset. Elijah Pitts' 83-yard touchdown sprint with a Redskin punt, with a minute and a half to play in the half, gave the Packers a 14-10 halftime lead. Norm Snead, who sat out the first half with a sore throat, sent the Redskins back in front early in the period with a 7-yard scoring toss to Fred Dugan. The Packers took the lead for keeps when Tom Moore slipped over from the two after Starr had set up the score with a 47-yard pass to Dowler.
