Bold  - Played for the Green Bay Packers
1962 IN REVIEW: Of all the teams to take the field under Vince Lombardi, the 1962 squad came the closest to perfection. Green Bay ripped off ten straight wins to start the season, before falling to Detroit 26-14 on Thanksgiving. The final three games went to the Packers, as did the NFL Championship game for the second straight year. Even a knee injury to Paul Hornung, which forced him to miss five games, could not slow down Green Bay. Adding in the exhibition season, the Packers went 20-1 in 1962. Green Bay scored a league- high 415, while holding opponents to a league-low 148. The running game set an NFL record with 36 touchdowns. The defense, led by Herb Adderly and Willie Wood, intercepted the most passes - 31 - in the NFL. The only question remaining at the end of the season was "Could Green Bay win three championships in a row?".

Green Bay Packers (13-1) 16, New York Giants (12-2) 7
(New York ) - The Giants outgained the Packers in yards, 291 to 244, but, in the end, New York lost the NFL Championship Game for the fourth time in five years. The key figure for the Packers was RB Jim Taylor, who tied the NFL playoff record with 31 carries, while gaining 85 yards and a touchdown. The score came in the second quarter, at a point when Green Bay already led 3-0 on a Jerry Kramer field goal. LB Dan Currie forced a fumble from Giants' HB Phil King, and Green Bay recoverd on the New York 28. On first down, Paul Hornung tossed a halfback option to Boyd Dowler for 21 yards. On the next play, Taylor blasted into the end zone. New York made its move into the third quarter, forcing the Packers to punt deep from their own territory. Erich Barnes blocked Max McGee's kick, and it was recovered in the end zone for a touchdown by Jim Collier. New
September 16: Green Bay Packers (1-0) 34, Minnesota Vikings (0-1) 7
(GREEN BAY) - Green Bay's Paul Hornung qualifies as a seasoned trooper. He lets the boys have their fun in dress rehearsals, then he takes charge. The 27-year-old halfback whose work was overshadowed in six staight exhibition victories went on a 28-point scoring spree as the Packers launched defense of their league championship by burying the Minnesota Vikings 34-7. Cheered on by a packed crowd of 38,669, Hornung personally wrecked the Vikings with touchdown runs of 37, 7 and 6 yards, a pair of field goals from 45 and 10 yards out and four conversions. Hornung appeared to be having trouble regaining his running legs after his release from the Army in July. However, neither Coach Lombardi or Hornung were worried. Herb Adderley, Willie Wood and Hank Gremminger led a Packer secondary that intercepted Fran Tarkenton five times. The scrambler was also sacked five times, resulting in 52 yards in losses.

(MILWAUKEE) - Green Bay's defense held the Cards' hard-running offense to 16 yards including 9 by John David Crow. The Packers' offense, led by Jim Taylor's 122 yards rushing and 40 yards receiving did the rest, with Paul Hornung scoring on a 3-yard run and Max McGee on a 19-yard pass from Bart Starr. Hornung, who had 28 points against Minnesota last week, added 11 with two XP and a 13-yard field goal.

The former LSU star now has 323 yards to Brown's 260. Green Bay's defense was as strong as its offense, intercepting five Bear passes, and allowing only 85 yards rushing. The Packers' defense unit has surrendered only one TD, to Minnesota in the first game. Paul Hornung, who sat out most of the game after pulling a leg muscle, converted after each of Green Bay's seven scores to run his league-leading point total to 46.

October 7: Green Bay Packers (4-0) 9, Detroit Lions (3-1) 7
(GREEN BAY) - Paul Hornung booted the defending National Football League champions into sole possession of first place in the Western Conference, kicking three field goals in a 9-7 victory over the Detroit Lions. As usual, he saved the best one for when it ras needed - this time 33 seconds from the finish. Herb Adderley set up Hornung's winning kick. The former Michigan State halfback intercepted one of Milt Plum's passes and ran 40 yards to Detroit's 21-yard line with less than two minutes to play. After two running plays, Horning stepped back and split the uprights from the 21-yard line. His other two boots were from the 15-yard line, one in the first period the first time the Packers had the ball and the other in the third quarter. The game served as the background for Lombardi's "Run To Daylight" book.

October 14: Green Bay Packers (5-0) 48, Minnesota Vikings (0-5) 21
(MINNESOTA) - The Green Bay Packers ably demonstrated they can get the job done even without the services of Paul Hornung. Hornung, the National Football League's scoring leader and an all-around star for the defending champion Packers, was forced to sit out the second half of the Packers' 48-21 victory over the Minnesota Vikings. Hornung suffered a twisted right knee after scoring Green Bay's first TD against the Vikings. But he was hardly missed as quarterback Bart Starr took over the controls and tossed touchdown passes of 15 and 55 yards to Max McGee and another of 18 yards to Boyd Dowler. Starr was on fire, completing 20 of 28 passes for 297 yards, including completing his first ten attempts.

October 21: Green Bay Packers (6-0) 31, San Francisco 49ers (3-3) 13
(MILWAUKEE) - Held in check until the final four minutes of the first half, the Green Bay Packers exploded behind Tom Moore for a 31-13 win over the San Francisco 49ers. Jim Taylor and Moore, who was standing in for the injured Paul Hornung, broke the game wide open in the second half by ripping the 49er defense to shreds. Taylor, the NFL's leading rusher, ran for 160 yards in 17 carries—130 them coming after the intermission. He scored touchdowns on runs of 17 and 25 yards. Moore added 84
yards to the Green Bay ground attack and went over for one touchdown. The final points came on a touchdown pass from Bart Starr to Ron Kramer and a 27 yard field goal by Jerry Kramer. San Francisco controlled the ball completely in the first quarter and up until there were slightly less than four minutes to play in the half, Green Bay had run only six plays. The Packers piled up 251 yards rushing with 197 of them coming after the intermission. Starr completed 10 to 12 passes for 107 yards. Probably one of the most deciding factors of the game was the punting of Boyd Dowler, who kicked four times for an average of 62.7 yards.

October 28: Green Bay Packers (7-0) 17, Baltimore Colts (3-4) 6
(BALTIMORE) - The Packers again relied on their defense, which halted the Colts eight times in Green Bay territory. Jim Taylor broke open the game with a 37-yard touchdown run following a pass interception by Ray Nitschke. Paul Hornung once again missed playing for the Packers because of an injured knee, but Bart Starr's passing, including a TD toss to Max McGee, was enough to beat the Colts. Dick Bielski's two field goals were all Baltimore could muster.

November 4: Green Bay Packers (8-0) 38, Chicago Bears (4-4) 7
(CHICAGO) - Jim Taylor scored four touchdowns and the Green Bay Packers capitalized on a bushel-full of breaks in a 38-7 rout over the Chicago Bears. The Packers didn't miss a stride in their drive towards a second NFL championship as they scored their 10th consecutive victory and their seventh straight over their one-time arch-rivals, the Bears. The Bears made it easy for the Packers, giving up the ball four times on fumbles and three tames on interceptions. Taylor's pile-driving legs and the passing of Bart Starr were the sparkplugs of the Packer offense. Packer coach Vince Lombardi didn't have to call on the assistance of his injured ace, Paul Hornung, who sat on the sidelines while replacement Tom Moore ran for 38 yards. Taylor's yardage total was 124 yards on 25 carries and included a 51-yard run around the left side of the Bear line. All his touchdowns were on short thrusts, twice from one yard out and twice again from the 2. The Bears got their only touchdown in the second quarter on a 78-yard march ending when Billy Wade hit Johnny Adams in the end zone from four yards out.

November 11: Green Bay Packers (9-0) 49, Philadelphia Eagles (1-7-1) 0
(PHILADELPHIA) - The relentless Green Bay Packers, a perfect balance of running and passing symmetry, buried the Philadelphia Eagles 49-0 for their ninth straight victory. Although fullback Jim Taylor scored four touchdowns, this was in every sense a team victory as the Packers gained more than a measure of revenge for their championship defeat here two years ago. With quarterback Bart Starr, the league's most accurate passer, completing 15 of 20 for 274 yards, and Taylor, the league's top runner, pacing a ground attack of 294 yards, the Packers made a farce of the game by half, taking a 35-0 lead. The Packers rolled 37 first downs, erasing the league record of 35 in one game set by Pittsburgh in 1958. Green Bay rolled for a total of 624 yards, 294 on the ground and 330 through the air.

November 18: Green Bay Packers (10-0) 17, Baltimore Colts (5-5) 13
(GREEN BAY) - The undefeated Green Bay Packers struggled to their tenth straight victory by edging the stubborn Baltimore Colts 17-13, with the help of a 103-yard kickoff return by Herb Adderley and two brilliant defensive stands. Baltimore outgained Green Bay in yards, 382-116, but still lost. The Packers pulled ahead on a 23-yard scoring dash by Tom Moore on the third play of the fourth period and then made a brilliant goal line stand to protect their slender margin with three minutes remaining. Outplayed most of the route, Green Bay had trouble penetrating the tough Baltimore defense. However, the Packers' tremendous defenders withstood an aerial blitz by Johnny Unitas and hung on to the end as the NFL champions posted their 18th straight triumph, including exhibitions, since the 1961 campaign. The win, though, came at a cost as LB Nelson Toburen's career ended when he broke his neck tackling Johnny Unitas in the fourth quarter.

November 22: Detroit Lions (9-2) 26, Green Bay Packers (10-1) 14
(DETROIT) - The bubble of perfection guarded so dearly by the mighty Green Bay Packers finally was burst. But don't count Vince Lombardi's charges out yet. If, as Lombardi suggests, their 26-14 defeat at the hands of the Detroit Lions was good medicine, they could make short work of the dwindling National Football League season. "I don't think anyone expected us to go undefeated, including me," Lombardi said after the nationally televised beating. Milt Plum got the Lions off to a 14-0 lead with scoring tosses of 33 and 27 yards to end Gail Cogdill, who made eye-catching snares of both passes in the end zone. Moments after Cogdill's second score, Sam Williams grabbed a Bart Star fumble and ran it four yards into the end zone for another touchdown. Roger Brown, the Lions' 300- pound tackle, led one of the most vicious charges ever put on by a Lion defensive line. Time after time he sparked the onslaught that dumped Starr and Jim Taylor. Brown set up one Lion touchdown when he forced Starr to fumble and also tackled the quarterback in the end zone for a safety, and a 23-0 lead. Plum booted a 47-yard field goal early in the third period to round out the scoring and push Detroit in front, 26-0, before the Packers' came to life. Bill Quinlan's four-yard runback of an intercepted Plum pass cut the Lions lead to 26-7 in the fourth quarter. Quinlan fumbled the ball into the end zone, where Willie Davis fell on it. Another Detroit mistake - Earl Morrall's fumble on his own 14 - was quickly converted.

December 2: Green Bay Packers (11-1) 41, Los Angeles Rams (1-10-1) 10
(MILWAUKEE - Green Bay's "Golden Boy", Paul Hornung, made his long-awaited comeback and teamed with Bart Starr and Jim Taylor to lead the Packers to a 41-10 victory over the Los Angeles Rams. Hornung, who hadn't seen extended action since an injury seven weeks ago against Minnesota, scored the Packers' first touchdown on a 30-yard pass from Starr and later took a 35-yard pass from Starr to set up Green Bay's second score. Taylor scored twice to run his NFL-leading total to 102 points. Starr also passed to Ron Kramer for four yards and a touchdown. December 9: Green Bay Packers (12-1) 31, San Francisco 49ers (6-7) 21
(SAN FRANCISCO) - One victory over the last place Los Angeles Rams next Sunday and the Green Bay Packers capture the Western Division title in the National Football League. Yet coach Vince Lombardi worries. "We're tired." declared the defending world champions' pilot after they staged a second half comeback sparked by Tom Moore, the replacement for Paul Hornung, to beat San Francisco 31-21. Hornung, who returned to action a week ago after being out with a leg injury, carried the ball only four times, gaining 4 yards on each. San Francisco wouldn't settle for a chance to tie Sunday, trailing 24-21 and facing fourth down at the Packer 12, they went for the touchdown and John Brodie's pass for Clyde Conner fell incomplete."A tie might have kept us from losing," coach Red Hickey explained. "But we weren't just playing for ourselves. A tie was as good as a win for the Packers." Hickey used a man-in-motion offense for the first time which left Brodie a lonesome quarterback, and the 49er passer hit 13 of 15 throws for 168 yards in the first half as San Francisco led 21-10.

December 16: Green Bay Packers (13-1) 20, Los Angeles Rams (1-12-1) 17
(LOS ANGELES) - Green Bay clinched the Western Conference title and set up a re-match with New York Giants for the National Football League championship as records tumbled from coast to coast. The Packers had the title wrapped up before they took the field against the Los Angeles Rams since the second-place Detroit Lions had fallen 3-0 to the Chicago Bears in a game that ended before the kickoff at Los Angeles. But the defending champions pulled out a 20-17 victory over the Rams for good measure. While they were about it, Jim Taylor broke an NFL record by scoring his 19th touchdown and the Packers set another mark by running their seasons's total of first downs to 281. Taylor set the touchdown record on a burst of 28 yards in the second quarter. The old mark was set by Steve Van Buren of Philadelphia in 10 games in 1945, and was tied by Jim Brown in 12 games in 1958. Taylor, of course, wound up the unofficial rushing champion, ending the five-year reign of Brown, who just missed making 1,000 yards for the fifth straight season. Taylor also succeeded teammate Paul Hornung as scoring champ with 114 points.

August 3: Green Bay Packers (1-0) 42, College All-Stars 20
(CHICAGO) - The Green Bay Packers finally wore down a surprisingly talented All-Star football team Friday night before 65,000, winning the 29th game in the classic series, 42-20, on the rifle passes of Bart Starr. But it was the passing of John Hadl of Kansas, drafted by the San Diego Chargers of the rival AFL, that kept the NFL champions scrambling until into the third period when the Packers finally took command. Hadl's passes put the All-Stars in front 7-0 on the opening kickoff, and after the Packers tied it 7-7, Greg Mather took advantage of a fumble to kick the first of twn field goals, this from the 26. to put the All-Stars ahead 10-7 in the second period. With the Packers leading at the start of the second half, Hadl passed 21 yards to Charlie Bryant to send the All-Stars in front 17-14. Then Mather kicked another field goal, this for 14 yards, to narrow the score to 21-20. But two fourth period touchdown passes from Starr to Max McGee, one for 20 and the other for 35 yards, put the game away.

August 10: Green Bay Packers (2-0) 31, Dallas Cowboys 7
(DALLAS) - Paul Hornung and Bart Starr made believers out of 54,090 Texans Friday night as they led Green Bay to an easy 31-7 exhibition victory over the Dallas Cowboys. The Packers scored in every period as they took their second straight triumph. They defeated the College All-Stars 42-20 last week, but actually had an easier time against the Cowboys. The Packers mixed slick running with an overpowering air attack in a sharp display of championship football before the big crowd, more than twice the Dallas turnout of a year ago. The fans and players alike sweltered in 90 degree temperature. The Packer aerial game picked up 233 yards, the ground attack 110. Dallas rushed for 114 yards and passed for 116. Green Bay rolled up 18 first downs, Dallas 13. Starr completed 11 of 14 passes for 164 yards and had able help from Roach who hit on three of five for 52 yards. Hornung completed his only pass for 17 yards. The heat limited the effectiveness of both teams, and prompted Packer Coach Vince Lombardi to offer, "It was too hot to tell anything."

August 18: Green Bay Packers (3-0) 41, St. Louis Cardinals 14
(JACKSONVILLE) - A devastating attack of the champion Packers meshed with a tremendous defense and chewed up the Cardinals 41-14 in an exhibition game Saturday night. Bart Starr quarterbacked the Packers to two touchdowns in the first 10 minutes. The defense assumed a starring role from there on. Defensive backs Willie Wood and Jesse Whittenton each picked off a pass by the Cardinals' Charles Johnson early in the second half and scored on 24 and 35 yard runbacks. Ray Nitschke followed their example with an interception and 54-yard runback in the final period to set up another Green B a y touchdown. Jimmy Taylor carried the brunt of the Green Bay running attack and scored three touchdowns on a four-yard sweep and two plunges.

August 25: Green Bay Packers (4-0) 35, Chicago Bears 21
(MILWAUKEE) - The Green Bay Packers, down 14-7 at halftime, rallied on the churning legs of Jim Taylor to score four times in the second half and defeat the Chicago Bears, 35-21, in the 13th Midwest Shrine Game at County Stadium Saturday night. The Packers all pro fullback, held to 15 yards before intermission, sparked the Packers to their 17th consecutive exhibition game victory since 1959. The "Bayou Blaster" scored two touchdowns and kept the sputtering Packers moving by picking up vital yardage throughout the second half. Taylor's 26-yard burst off left tackle with 11 minutes left in the game was the deciding tally.

September 3: Green Bay Packers (5-0) 20, New York Giants 17
(GREEN BAY) - Green Bay halfback Paul Hornung may be having trouble regaining his "ground" legs after nearly a year in the Army, but he apparently still has the old scoring touch. The NFL scoring king the past three seasons tallied 14 points in leading the Packers to a 20-17 victory over the New York Giants before a packed crowd of 38,669 Monday night in the second annual Bishop's Charities game at City Stadium. Hornung gained only nine yards in seven cracks at the New York line but had the golden touch at other times. He caught three passes for 77 yards, flashing his brilliant running form after each reception, and was a demon in the blocking department. Led by Jimmy Taylor, the Packers piled up 168 yards on the ground, while holding the Giants to a mere 42. New York had a 183-165 margin in the air, however, as Green Bay's passing game wasn't as sharp as usual. Taylor finished with 83 yards in 17 carries while his understudy, rookie Earl Gros, gained 52 in 10 attempts.

September 8: Green Bay Packers (6-0) 20, Washington Redskins 14
(COLUMBUS, GA) - The preliminary events out of the way in perfect order, the Green Bay Packers began looking forward today to defense of their NFL title. The Packers wound up the exhibition season Saturday night with a victory over the Washington Redskins. It gave them a clean sweep of six decisions in preliminary play this year. The victory also ran the Packers string to 19 consecutive decisions in exhibition games. They haven't been beaten in such games since 1959. Bart Starr and his understudy, John Roach, passed the Packers to their victory over the Redskins. Starr, who went off the field in the third quarter limping with an ankle injury, threw a 14-yard touchdown pass to Ron Kramer in the first period and another for three yards to Max McGee in the third quarter. Roach, who quarterbacked the Packers most of the second, half, added another touchdown on a 10-yard pass to Tom Moore in the second quarter.
