Green Bay Packers (11-3) 37, New York Giants (10-3-1) 0
(Green Bay) - The Packers, and Paul Hornung in particular, dominated the Giants to win their first NFL title since 1944. Green Bay outgained New York 345-130 in total yards and intercepted Y.A.Tittle four times, while Hornung rushed for 89 yards, caught three passes, and scored 19 points. New York had some early chances, but they slipped away as Kyle Rote dopped a sure touchdown pass deep in Green Bay territory, and then halfback Bob Gaiters overthrew a wide-open Rote in the end zone. By the end of the first quarter, the tide had turned, and Green Bay erupted for 24 points in the second quarter. It started with Hornung's 6-yard touchdown run. Bart Starr then threw touchdown passes to Boyd Dowler and Ron Kramer, before Hornung nailed a short field goal just before the half. Two short field goals by Hornung and another touchdown pass from Starr to Kramer finished off the scoring for Green Bay. Meanwhile, the Giants could never get untracked, as Charlie Conerly finally relieved a battered Tittle late, but could nothing to move the Giants' offense.

September 17: Detroit Lions (1-0) 17, Green Bay Packers (0-1) 13
(MILWAUKEE) - The Detroit Lions shackled Green Bay's vaunted ground attack and stopped a late threat on Dick Lane's  pass interception in the closing minutes, defeating Green Bay, 17-13. Lane picked thr loose ball out of the air after Bart Starr's pass bounced off Gary Knafelc's fingers, ending Green Bay's final chance. Lane, a veteran defensive hack, hauled in the slippery ball at his seven, and returned it six yards. The Lions then ran out the clock in hree plays. The Detroit defense, rated by many as one of the finest in the league, surrendered a touchdown to Green Bay less than 3 1/2 minutes after the opening kickoff. But then the Lions settled down and bottled up the overland attack which led the Packers to the Western Conference championship a year ago. A couple of Yale Lary punts deep in Packer territory set up both Detroit scores.

Taylor piled up 130 yards by rushing, scoring once on a three-yard plunge. Hornung broke loose on fancy jaunts, picking up 59 yards. The Green Bay defense picked off four Chicago passes. The first, by Johnny Symank who returned it 29 yards to the Bears' 15, set up a first-period touchdown. (GREEN BAY) - Paul Hornung touched off a personal 33-point scoring spree with a 54-yard touchdown jaunt, and the Packers went on to rout the Baltimore Colts 45-7. Hornung, who set an NFL record by scoring 176 points a year ago, tallied four touchdowns, booted a 38-yard field goal and kicked six extra points as the Packers registered their third straight triumph since being upset by Detroit in the season's opener. Green Bay's stingy defense, which has allowed only 34 points in four outings, smothered Baltimore's vaunted passing attack triggered by Johnny Unitas. The Packers intercepted five Unitas passes and one by Lamar McHan, the Colts' No. 2 quarterback.

(CLEVELAND) - Jim Taylor put on a one-man show as the Packers swamped the Cleveland Browns, 49-17. Taylor scored four touchdowns on runs ranging from one to 45 yards, picked up 168 yards iri 21 tries and took a runaway lead over Jim Brown of Cleveland for the season's ground gaining laurels. The Packers scored on touchdown drives of 69, 68, 80 and 80 yards the first four times they had the ball and Cleveland's only score up to that time was Lou Groza's 27-yard field goal. Milt Plum hit Gern Nagler and Ray Renfro with scoring passes after that, but Green Bay made it a rout on a four-yard score by Taylor, a 48-yard pass from Bart Starr to Max McGee and a one-yard plunge by substitute quarterback John Roach. It was the biggest regular game score run up against the Browns since Pittsburgh beat them, 55-27, in 1954.

October 22: Green Bay Packers (5-1) 33, Minnesota Vikings (1-5) 7
(MINNESOTA) - Bart Starr's passing, Tom Moore's running and Paul Hornung's kicking overcame a tough Minnesota defense as Green Bay spanked the expansion Vikings and took over the Western lead.  Moore came into the game early in the first quarter when Paul Hornung aggravated a knee injury. The former Vanderbilt star ran hard many times, ripping through Minnesota arm tackles. The Packers moved at will up and down the field until they got within the Minnesota 20. Then the Vikings stood, four times forcing the Packers to settle for a Hornung field goal. Starr's 78-yard touchdown aerial to Boyd Dowler on the Packers' first offensive play of the game got Green Bay into an early lead. Minnesota moved against the Packers' defense but fumbles and interceptions stopped potential drives. The only Minnesota touchdown came on an 80-yard sustained march.

October 29: Green Bay Packers (6-1) 28, Minnesota Vikings (1-6) 10
(MILWAUKEE) - Green Bay's 28-10 victory over the Minnesota Vikings was a costly one for the Packers. "Minnesota kicked the heck out of us physically," said Green Bay defensive back Emlen Tunnell, "but we got the points and that's what counts." That was' the general feeling among the Packers after the Vikings succumbed for the second straight week. Bart Starr was the Vikings' principal antagonist, firing 18 strikes in 24 attempts for 311 yards and two touchdowns. Coming close to matching the Packers' quarterback was old pro Hugh McElhenny of the Vikings who ground out 99 yards in 12 carries. The Packers moved with seeming ease to a 21-0 halftime lead. The Vikings didn't buckle and quarterback George Shaw led an aerial assault that climaxed in a 19-yard scoring pass to Jerry Reichow in the third period. Mike Mercer followed through with a field goal in the third period before Green Bay regained its poise and connected for the game's final touchdown in the fourth period. Green Bay came out of the game with two of its most valuable players injured and another pair possibly lost to the army. Offensive guard Jerry Kramer suffered a possible cracked ankle when he made the tackle on a kickoff. Paul Hornung is slated to report to the Army in the next week. Green Bay will also lose linebacker Ray Nitschke to the army, while end Boyd Dowler received a short delay in his reporting. Another injury was to flanker Ron Kramer, who limped off the field with a sprained ankle.

November 5: Baltimore Colts (4-4) 45, Green Bay Packers (6-2) 21
(BALTIMORE) - Gambling Johnny Unitas and his Baltimore Colts offense came alive with a vengeance and ripped through the Green Bay Packers to the tune of 45-21 upset. The Packers had given up only 68 points in seven previous games of which they had won the last six. The Colts, gaining ample revenge for a 45-7 shellacking by the Packers a month ago, appeared to catch fire on a spectacular 38-yard touchdown run by Lenny Moore just before the half ended. It put the Colls ahead 21-14 and they killed the Packers both on offense and defense in the second half. Green Bay couldn't get past the Colt 45 until Jesse Whittenton returned
an intercepted pass 41 yards for a touchdown against Colt substitutes in the final couple of minutes. Unitas, who threw four passes for touchdowns, first showed his daring in the third quarter. With fourth down on the Packer 19, he waved off field goal kicker Steve Myhra and threw a 19-yard scoring pass to Jimmy Orr that hiked the Colt edge to 31-14 early in the fourth period.

November 19: Green Bay Packers (8-2) 35, Los Angeles Rams (3-7) 17
(GREEN BAY) - The Green Bay Packers, minus the services of scoring ace Paul Hornung, saw their offense sputter for one quarter Sunday and then catch fire behind the passing of Bart Starr for a 35-17 win over the Los Angeles Rams. Starr threw two touchdown passes to Max McGee and one to Boyd Dowler to lead the Packers from a 7-0 first quarter deficit to a 28-10 lead at halftime. Jim Taylor scored the other two Packer touchdowns on one-yard plunges, once in the second period and again in the fourth. The Rams drew first blood, turning an interception and a 31-yard runback by Lyndon Crow into a touchdown three plays later by Jon Arnett. They added a 27-yard field goal by Danny Villaneuva in the second period and another touchdown on a 41-yard pass from Frank Ryan to Ollie Matson in the final quarter. Ben Agajanian was signed to do the kicking for Green Bay as Paul Hornung's milirary service forced him to miss this game.

November 23: Green Bay Packers (9-2) 17, Detroit Lions (6-4-1) 9
(DETROIT) - Even coach George Wilson of the Detroit Lions was ready to concede that "only a miracle" can stop the Green Bay Packers from clinching the Western Conference title. "They'll have to lose their last three games, and that's not likely," said the dejected Wilson after the Packers' 17-9 victory over the Lions. It was the Green Bay defensive backfield and hard-running fullback Jim Taylor who made the difference. Both coaches admitted Herb Adderley's interception of a Jim Ninowski pass late in the third period, which set up the Packers' winning score, made the difference. With a first down on the Detroit 40 following Adderley's pick-off, the Packers marched in to score in four plays with Taylor bulling his way over for his second touchdown of the game. Taylor, held to .35 yards rushing in the first three periods, found running room in the final quarter and picked up 55 yards in 11 carries to spark the Packers' two final scoring drives.

Led by Jim Taylor and Paul Hornung, the Packers edged the Giants 20-17, wrapping up the Western title with a 10-2 record. The Packers won it as Taylor scored twice on runs of 14 and 3 yards, the last the clincher in the fourth quarter. He set a franchise record with 189 yards rushing. Hornung brought his league-leading point total to 143 with a pair of field goals and two extra points. The key defensive play was made by Packers' DB Jesse Whittenton, who stole the ball from Alex Webster on the Giants' 30 in the final quarter. The Packers, trailing 17-13, took advantage of the fumble, with Taylor going over for the winning touchdown from the 3.

December 10: San Francisco 49ers (7-5-1) 22, Green Bay Packers (10-3) 21
(SAN FRANCISCO) - The San Francisco 49ers stayed in contention for the NFL's Playoff Bowl with a movie script finish as Tommy Davis booted a 14-yard field goal with 11 seconds left to beat the champion Green Bay Packers 22-21. Green Bay had won the divisional title a week ago with their tenth triumph of the campaign. Yet Sunday's victory at Kezar Stadium proved especially gratifying to 49er Coach Red Hickey whose team won for the first time over the Packers since he took over in 1959. John Brodie hit 19 of 29 passes for 328 yards and seven for 127 went to flanker R. C. Owens. One was a 10-yard pitch for the second San Francisco touchdown. The first came on a 51-yard pass play with rookie Bernie Casey making the score. The end from Bowling Green also grabbed four others, making his yardage 118 for the afternoon. The 49ers awarded him the game ball. Scoring their first two touchdowns in the second period, the 49ers led 14-7 at the half with the Packer tally coming on a 22-yard pass from Tom Moore to Max McGee. When Charlie Krueger tackled Bart Starr behind the Packer goal in the third period, San Francisco held a 16-7 advantage and that safety eventually meant the difference between victory and defeat. For in succession came a touchdown by McGee on a 13-yard pass from Starr, a 10-yard field goal by Davis and a four-yard touchdown run by the Packers' Jim Taylor.

December 17: Green Bay Packers (11-3) 24, Los Angeles Rams (4-10) 17
(LOS ANGELES) - Green Bay survived sensational touchdown runs by Los Angeles' Dick Bass to complete their best National Football League season (11-3) in 20 years. Successive touchdown runs of 55 and 90 yards by Bass had put the Rams ahead 17-14 in the last quarter but the Packers retaliated with a touchdown and field goal for the 24-17 victory. Bass' 90-yard run was a record punt return for the Rams. Bart Starr promptly led the Packers back into command after Bass' second score. Starr maneuvered the Packers into Ram territory and Ben Agajanian kicked a 28-yard field goal to tie the score. Starr then took the Packers on a 66-yard touchdown drive with Elijah Pitts running the final 17 yards for the score. Tom Moore, filling in for Paul Hornung, scored Green Bay's first two touchdowns on a one yard plunge in the first quarter and an eight-yard pass reception from Starr in the second period. A 17-yard field goal by Danny Villanueva provided Los Angeles' only first half points.

1961 IN REVIEW: An expanded 14-game schedule proved to be no problem for the Packers, as they won their first championship since 1944. Led by Jim Taylor, Paul Hornung and Tom Moore, Green Bay racked up more rushing yards (2,350), more first downs (142) and more touchdowns (27) than anyone else in the NFL. Bart Starr completed 58 percent of his passes for a team record 2,418 yards. The defense ranked 6th in the league, giving up fewer points than anyone else but the Giants. The team also recored 29 takeaways, tied for Detroit as second best. After clinching the Western Conference title in Week 12, Green Bay had no problem in the NFL Title game, the first one ever held in Green Bay. They steamrolled the New York Giants, 37-0, holding them to six first downs and 130 yards on offense. The defense picked off Y.A. Tittle four times. To end speculation that Vince Lombardi may be heading to the Giants as head coach, Green Bay signed him to a new five-year contract in August.

August 11: Green Bay Packers (1-0) 30, Dallas Cowboys (1-1) 7
(DALLAS) - Green Bay's Packers got off to an auspicious start Friday night by trimming the Dallas Cowboys in an exhibition game. Bart Starr, the old Alabama ace, passed five yards to Paul Hornung for one touchdown, set up two more and his throwing and running combined with the dashes of Jim Taylor led to a fourth. Taylor's 16-yard field goal rounded out the Green Bay scoring. The Cowboys did not win a game in their first appearance in the NFL last year but got off to a fine start a week by ago beating the Minnesota Vikings 38-13. Dallas made its touchdown on a sensational play. It was an 80-yard pass play from Eddie LeBaron to Frank Clarke. Moore scored twice for Green Bay on runs of five and six yards. Taylor scored on a two yard plunge and kicked a 16 yard field goal and three out of four extra points. Homung grabbed a 4-yard pass for his touchdown.

August 18: Green Bay Packers (2-0) 31, St. Louis Cardinals 10
(ST. LOUIS) - Veteran Bart Starr, who passed the Green Bay Packers to the Western Division title last year apparently has lost none of his skill. The Green Bay quarterback passed the Packers to a 31-10 rornp over the St. Louis Cardinals in an exhibition game Friday night before a crowd of 31,056, the largest ever to see a football game in St. Louis. It was the Packers second exhibition victory in as many starts. Starr passed for two touchdowns, set up a third with his tosses and completed 10 of 19 for 193 yards. Jim Taylor, the bruising 215-pound fullback, scored 13 points for Green Bay with his running and kicking. The Cardinals lost the service of veteran halfback John David Crow, a 1,000-yard gainer last seaon, for six weeks when he fractured an ankle. His leg will be in a cast for about five or six weeks.

August 26: Green Bay Packers (3-0) 24, Chicago Bears 14
(MILWAUKEE) - Green Bay coach Vince Lombardi claims he's satisfied with the progress of his 1961 Packers. But even victory can't keep him from bristling at mistakes on the field. "I'm not too happy about our mistakes," Lombard! said after the Packers' 24-14 come-from-behind triumph over the Chicago Bears Saturday night in the 12th annual Midwest Shrine benefit game. "Yes, I'm satisfied with our progress in training for this time of year," the fiery mentor said. "But we made too many mistakes, both mental and physical, against the Bears." The Packers outplayed the Bears by a wide margin, but had to rally for a pair of fourth period touchdowns to post their third exhibition victory of the season and 11th straight since 1959. Playing before a Milwaukee County Stadium crowd of 42,560, the largest turnout in history for a game between professional football clubs in
Wisconsin, Green Bay struck early and late.

September 4: Green Bay Packers (4-0) 20, New York Giants 17
(GREEN BAY) - Quarterback Bart Starr was on target again Monday night as the Green Bay Packers beat the New York Giants. 20-17, but the reassurring news was that Paul Hornung's toe and leg are healthy again. Playing before the largest crowd ever to see a game here, Starr completed 18 of 25 passes for 171 yards and one touchdown as the Packers twice came from behind. Starr's tosses also set up all but one of the other Packer tallies. But it was Hornung who was the hero. He legged the ball 13 yards through the upright's in the last quarter to give the Packers the win, after the Giants' Pat Summerall had tied with a 25-yard boot. The game raised $30,000 for the Bishop's Charity, and was the first night professional game played here.
