1960 IN REVIEW: The Green Bay Packers returned to the championship game for the first time since 1944, thanks to a powerful running attack, a record-setting halfback and a quarterback who had been ranked dead last in the NFL two years earlier. Jim Taylor rushed for 1,101 yards, breaking Tony Canadeo's team record. As a team, the Packers ran for 2,150 yards. Paul Hornung set an NFL record with 176 points. Bart Starr became the starter for good in Week 6, replacing Lamar McHan. Green Bay nearly missed out on the Western Conference title, when they had a 5-4 record, and sat a game-and-a-half behind Baltimore. The Packers then reeled off three straight wins, while the Colts and Bears collapsed. Unfortunately, the Packer magic fell short in the title game. The season was not without tragedy. 33-year old Jack Vainisi, who had been instrumental in acquiring the talent that returned Green Bay to the top, died in November of a heart attack due to rheumatic fever. The team's first president, Andrew Turnbull, died in October at the age of 76.

Philadelphia Eagles (10-2) 17, Green Bay Packers (8-4) 14
(Philadelphia) - It was the last playoff game for Norm Van Brocklin as a player, and the first for Vince Lombardi as a head coach. The experience carried the day, as the Eagles administered the only loss Lombardi would ever have in a champiosnhip game. Philadelphia turned the ball over twice deep in their own territory in the opening minutes. The defense held, however, and the Packers only got a field goal from Paul Hornung. After Hornung scored again in the second quarter, the Eagles turned to Van Brocklin. Taking over at his 43, he found Tommy McDonald for 22 yards. Then Van Brocklin went to McDonald again, for 35 yards and a touchdown. Bobby Walston's field goal put the Eagles up 10-6 at the half. Green Bay took the lead back in the fourth quarter when Bart Starr hit Max McGee with a touchdown pass, but Philadelphia, boosted by Ted Dean's 58-yard kickoff return, came right back. Their 39-yard drive ended when Dean scored with 5:21 left. Green Bay
September 25: Chicago Bears (1-0) 17, Green Bay Packers (0-1) 14
(GREEN BAY) - A 21-yard field goal by John Aveni in the last 33 seconds gave the Chicago Bears, who scored all of their points in the fourth quarter, a 17-14 win over the Green Bay Packers. Aveni got his kicking shot when Earl Legget intercepted a batted pass by Bart Starr. The burly lineman carried the ball back to the Green Bay 32 and Willie Galimore, in two thrusts, moved it to the 12. Rick Casares added another four yards before Aveni booted, the score that gave Chicago its' eighth straight win in league play. The other seven victories came at the tag end of the 1939 season when the Bears finished a breath behind the champion Baltimore Colts. The results also snapped a four-game winning streak for the Packers, who had also won all six exhibition games.

October 2: Green Bay Packers (1-1) 28, Detroit Lions (0-1) 9
(GREEN BAY) - Lamar McHan replaced Bart Starr as the starting quarterback, and led Green Bay to a win. It was the defensive line, dubbed as an area of strength in the preseason outlook, that failed the Detroit Lions. Jim Taylor and Paul Hornung hammered the vaunted corps of Detroit defenders into submission and their savage thrusts through the middle led the Packers on a second-half comeback and a 28-9 triumph. Taylor and Hornung racked up a total of 224 yards rushing but they didn't get rolling until the second half when the Packers rallied for three touchdowns to wipe out a 9-7 halftime deficit. The powerful foot of Jim Martin accounted for all of the Lion points. Taylor busted out for 151 yards rushing. Hornung hit paydirt for the other two Packer scores and contributed 16 points to the Green Bay total. The former Notre Dame All-American scored one on a 16-yard pass from Lamar McHan and dashed 11 yards off tackle for the other.

October 9: Green Bay Packers (2-1) 35, Baltimore Colts (2-1) 21
(GREEN BAY) - The Packers defeated the Colts for the first time since 1957. In this triumph over the Colts, the Packers were outgained rushing and passing, 198 yards to 159 and 237 to 86, respectively. The Colts were also ahead on first downs at 27-18 and the number of passes completed. But Green Bay took over another way. The Packers intercepted four Baltimore passes and recovered two of the opposition's fumbles. This was the forerunner of disaster for Baltimore as it lost its first game of the season and Green Bay scored its second victory in three contests. Jim Taylor scored three of Green Bay's touchdowns, one on a 12-yard smash through the line and again on plunges from the three and the one. Green Bay's other touchdowns were scored on a 12-yard pass from Lamar McHan to Tom Moore and McHan's 35-yard run in the closing seconds.

October 23: Green Bay Packers (3-1) 41, San Francisco 49ers (2-2) 14
(MILWAUKEE) - After a bye week, the Packer offense rolled with 456 yards. The Packers wasted little time in proving Coach Vince Lombardi's fears of an off weekend groundless. They scored the first two times they had possession of the ball on marches of 80 and 83 yards. Lamar McHan unlimbered his passing arm, a maneuver which helped to open up the San Francisco defense for bull-like rushes by Paul Hornung, Jim Taylor, Tom Moore, and company. Hornung, who had 23 points for the day and boosted his total to 52 for the season, cracked one yard for the first of Green Bay's two opening period touchdowns. Taylor, a mad man on the loose on a football field, picked up 45 yards in the downfield advance from the Green Bay 20. Entering the game as the NFL leader in rushing, he netted 98 yards in 20 carries. That boosted his rushing yardage for four games to 379 in 83 attempts.

October 30: Green Bay Packers (4-1) 19, Pittsburgh Steelers (2-3-1) 13
(PITTSBURGH) - Bart Starr came off the bench in the second half and quarterbacked the Packers to a 19-13 victory. The winning touchdown, a one yard plunge by Jim Taylor, was scored with only 63 seconds left to play. It overshadowed a great comeback engineered by another guy who came off the bench, Bobby Layne of the Steelers. Through the first half, it appeared as if Green Bay was on its way to a romp, even though there wasn't a touchdown scored. Paul Hornung, the NFL's leading scorer, padded his point column with four field goals from 45, 35, 35 and 17 yards away, to give the Packers a 12-0 lead. Then, in the second quarter, Layne stepped onto the field and the Steelers came to life. Running sometimes without the benefit of a huddle, Layne quick-passed the Steelers to a touchdown. The payoff pitch was for 37 yards to Tom Tracy. Layne's extra point kick sliced Green Bay's edge to 12-7 at the half. His second scoring pass was for 48 yards to Buddy Dial just after the fourth quarter began. This time Layne's tosses accounted for 65 of the 80 yards the Steelers gained. Two second half field goal tries by Hornung, from 51 and 40 yards out were wide. After Lamar McHan completed just four of his 16 pass attempts, he was replaced by Bart Starr, who directed the game-winning drive. Starr started slowly, but he had a full head of steam up by the time Henry Jordan recovered Tracy's fumble on the Green Bay 34 with just about five minutes to play. 5,000 fans greeted the Packers at the airport.

November 6: Baltimore Colts (5-2) 38, Green Bay Packers (4-2) 24
(BALTIMORE) - The chances of the Baltimore Colts playing for a third straight NFL title remained very much alive, due in great measure to the gambling nerve of quarterback John Unitas. Less than a yard away from a first down on third down, Unitas went for the long gain and cashed in for a late fourth period touchdown that broke a 24-24 tie with Green Bay Sunday. The Colts then scored again and won 38-24. The Colts had the ball on the Packer 38 with the score tied 24-24 and time fast running out. Unitas disdained a safe try for the first down and passed to end Raymond Berry on the Packer 8. Berry caught it. but was out of bounds. Billy Pricer, who had started at fullback for ihe Colts, came running in and the Packers probably guessed it was for the fourth down plunge. Instead, Unitas cooly passed out to his right to halfback Lenny Moore for a 23 -yard gain. Two plays later, Unitas passed to Berry on the 10 and the end ran past two defenders for the payoff touchdown. The Colts scored again after an intercepted pass, but it was merely window dressing. The offense was aided greatly by a Green Bay misfortune. Early in the game, Jesse Whittenton went out with a pulled leg muscle. All four Colt touchdown passes went over the heads of Dick Pesonen and Willie Wood, rookies playing their first games on defense.

November 13: Green Bay Packers (5-2) 41, Dallas Cowboys (0-8) 7
(GREEN BAY) - The Packers wound up their Green Bay schedule by rolling over the hapless Dallas Cowboys
41-7. Green Bay struck for a touchdown the first time it had possession of the ball, added 20 points in the second period and then tallied in each of the last two quarters. Jim Taylor gave a spectatcular performance by scoring three touchdowns against the Cowboys, while teammate Paul Hornung collected 17 points to boost his total for the season to an even 100. Hornung needs just 39 more points in five games to break the league record of 138 set by the Packers' Don Hutson in 11 contests in 1942. Taylor scored the first two touchdowns on an 28-yard run in which he appeared to be stopped for a loss and on a four -yard dive into the end zone. Then came the biggest crowd pleasing tally. Linebacker Ray Nitschke scored his first touchdown in three years as a pro by picking off a Dallas pass and racing 43 yards into the end zone. The Cowboys avoided a shutout by scoring on a 14-yard pass from Don Meredith to Walt Kowalczyk midway through the final quarter. The Packers came out of the game with one major casualty. DE Jim Temp re-injured his shoulder and probably will be lost for at least three weeks. He previously had a shoulder separation.

November 20: Los Angeles Rams (3-5-1) 33, Green Bay Packers (5-3) 31
(MILWAUKEE) - The upstart Los Angeles Rams dealt Green Bay's title hopes a crushing blow by edging the Packers 33-31 on Danny Villanueva's fourth field goal of the game with 22 seconds remaining. The Packers, who staged a brilliant second-half rally to pull from 20 points behind lost a golden chance to move into a tie for first place with the Baltimore Colts. The Rams, who scored all their points as the result of Green Bay mistakes, took advantage of a fumble recovery on the Los Angeles 40 to move downfield and set up Villanueva's game-winning boot. Paul Hornung boosted his league leading point total to 119 with a pair of touchdowns, a field goal and four conversions. His toe failed in the clutch as he missed a field goal attempt from the 22 with just 4:44 left, allowing the Rams to rally.

November 24: Detroit Lions (4-5) 23, Green Bay Packers (5-4) 10
(DETROIT) - Jim Ninowski swept the title-hopeful Green Bay Packers off their feet with a devastating first half passing attack that started the Detroit Lions toward a 23-10 win. Ninowski's completed 14 of 22 for 180 yards in the first half. Coupled with Green Bay blunders, the Lions had a 16-0 half-time lead. Green Bay fumbles led to two Detroit touchdowns. The Lions added a safety on a blocked punt and put together a 76 yard scoring drive in the first period. Ninowski had thrown only one touchdown pass in eight games and got his first one before the home folks on an 11-yard toss to Jim Gibbons in the third period. Ninowski scored another himself on a seven-yard run and Ken Webb plunged over for the other. Paul Hornung scored all of Green Bay's points and now is only 10 points away from a NFL record. The former Notre Dame star kicked a 12-yard field goal, ran eight yards for a touchdown and kicked the extra points for all of his teams points in the third period to cut Detroit's lead to 16-10. Willie Wood's fumble of a Detroit punt at the Green Bay 13 just four plays later killed off Green Bay's last real hope for victory. Wood signaled for a fair catch, but misjudged the ball and it trickled out of his hands behind him. A Detroit rookie, Bruce Haher, recovered the ball at the 13. Ninowski found Gibbons in the end zone for the touchdown pass two plays later.

(CHICAGO) - With the season on the line, the Packers, getting a 23-point performance from Paul Hornung that gave him 152 for the campaign and broke Don Hutson's 18- year-old one-season scoring record, walloped the Bears 41-13. Hornung carried the Packers to their overwhelming triumph against the Bears by scoring twice on a 10-yard run and a 17-yard pass from Bart Starr, kicking two field goals and five conversions. Chicago's touchdowns came on a 19-yard Ed Brown to Willard Dewveall and a 20-yard toss from Zeke Bratkowski to Jim Dooley. The game was dedicated to Jack Vainisi, who died the previous week.

December 10: Green Bay Packers (7-4) 13, San Francisco 49ers (6-5) 0
(SAN FRANCISCO) - The Green Ray Packers, who once admitted they were "dead" in this year's title race, vaulted into the Western Division lead on the talented running and kicking of workhorse Paul Hornung, who led them through the mud and rain to a slippery 13-0 victory over the San Francisco Forty-Niners. Hornung, with a pile-driving assist all day from Jim Taylor, scored the lone touchdown of the day, kicked a point after and also booted two field goals. In fact, the Packers were so good on defense that they never allowed San Francisco more than one foot inside their territory. The two teams, unable to make much ground during the heavy rain of the first half, went scoreless until 52 seconds before the intermission. Green Bay Packers got on the board when Hornung kicked a mud-soaked ball 38 yards for a field goal. That three points stood up until the last quarter. The Packer defense, with end Bill Quinlan and tackles Henry Jordan and Dave Hanner providing a stone wall, kept San Francisco deep in its own territory. Then Green Bay started a drive from its own 16 and in nine plays drove the S4 yards to score. The concluding run was Hornung's 28-yarder behind a horde of blockers.

December 17: Green Bay Packers (8-4) 35, Los Angeles Rams (4-7-1) 21
(LOS ANGELES) - The Green Bay Packers won the National Football League's Western Division title Saturday by whipping the tough but outmanned Los Angeles Rams 35-21. The Rams actually stymied the Packers running attack, but Green Bay took to the air to score what was an easy victory. The Packers got a scare in the fourth quarter when the Rams scored twice but the effort was not good enough. This was the first Western Division title for the Packers in 14 years. The crowd of 53,445 broke into a chorus of boos in the fourth quarter when officials called a pass interference penalty on Ram DB Vernon Valdez. One spectator became so enraged, he rushed onto the field but was nabbed by policemen. The penalty gave the Packers a first down on the Ram four-yard line. On the second play in the series, halfback Paul Hornung dived over from the one for a touchdown. There was more excitement on the ensuing kickoff — and more boos — when Ram halfback Jon Arnett was ejected from the game for indulging in fisticuffs with Packer end Willie Davis. The Packers, who jubilantly carried coach Vince Lombardi off the field at the end of the game, played strictly conservative ball during the third quarter which was scoreless. Bart Starr completed 8 of 9 passes for 201 yards and two touchdowns. His perfect 158.3 rating is the fourth such time it has happened in Packer history, but it has not been matched since.

The Packers came up with two touchdowns, both on passes, in the third quarter to provide them with the victory in the first pro football game here in 12 years. Lamar McHan tossed for the first touchdown, a 22-yarder to Max McGee. at the start of the period. Paul Hornung flipped 10 yards to Boyd Dowler for the other touchdown. Pittsburgh's lone touchdown came in the last quarter on John Henry Johnson's four-yard plunge. Johnson's running and Bobby Layne's passing sparked the 80-yard drive. The teams traded field goals in the first half. Hornung kicked a pair for the victors while Bert Rechichar booted two for the Steelers, one a 42-yarder. Hornung added two more points on extra point kicks. Layne kicked the Steelers' point after touchdown.
