Bold - Played for the Green Bay Packers
September 25: Green  Bay Packers (1-0) 20, Detroit Lions (0-1) 17
(GREEN BAY) - The highly-rated pass defense of the Detroit Lions was put to its first serious test - and failed. It resulted in a 20-17 opening loss to the Green Bay Packers, who struck for the winning touchdown in the final 20 seconds of play. With a half minute to play, Green Bay furiously drove to Detroit's 18. The Lions, holding a slender 17-13 lead, quickly called time out to regroup their forces. A pass was obvious and the Lions set their defense for it. But when quarterback Tobin Rote stepped back to pitch the awaited pass, the Lions couldn't stop him. What hurt more was the fact they couldn't stop end Gary Knafelc, either, as he leaped some three feet off the ground to snare the desperation pass over the outstretched hands of three Detroit defenders on the 3. He crashed into the end zone with the winning touchdown—one which staggered the Lions in their opening bid for a fourth straight Western Division championship. The Packer faithful, who has not seen their team win in Green Bay since last November, flooded on to the field and carried Rote and Knafelc off on their shoulders. Order was restored to kick the extra point. The upset was one of missed opportunities for the Lions. Twice they were inside Green Bay's 5, only to salvage a 12-yard field goal by Doak Walker. A missed field goal by Walker started Green Bay off on its winning 80-yard touchdown drive. The key play in the march was a squirming 38-yard jaunt by Rote, who raced to the Detroit 38. It was Green Bay's first victory in 12 tries against the Lions, who had not lost to Green Bay since 1949.

October 2: Green Bay Packers (2-0) 24, Chicago Bears (0-2) 3
(GREEN BAY) - The Packers improved to 2-0 for the first time since 1947, as Tobin Rote threw two touchdown passes and ran for another. Green Bay owed much of its early success to Rote, who fired 32 yards to Bill Howton for one touchdown and connected with Gary Knafelc for a 28-yard clincher in the final period. In between scoring passes, Rote plunged one yard for the other Packer touchdown.

October 8: Baltimore Colts (3-0) 24, Green Bay Packers (2-1) 20
(MILWAUKEE) - Green Bay had a chance to win the Saturday night encounter at County Stadium, but Tobin Rote's pass to Billy Howton in the end zone with no time remaining came up inches short. The surprising Baltimore Colts hustled into the Packers end zone three times in the first period and then held off the fast-closing Packers for three periods. The Colts' scoring was closed out by a field goal by Bert Reichichar from a slight right angle 10 yards out. A record Milwaukee football crowd of more than 40,000 jammed County Stadium to watch the night contest. Rechichar's placekick came early in the final quarter after a fumble by Rote gave the Colts the ball on the Green Bay 20. The Packers pounded to a 7-0 lead after 41 seconds of play on a 38-yard pass from Rote to Billy Howton after Alan Ameche fumbled on the first play from scrimmage. That was the last and only time Green Bay led.

October 16: Green Bay Packers (3-1) 30, Los Angeles Rams (3-1) 28
(MILWAUKEE) - It had been eight years since the Green Bay Packers had had a winning season in the National Football League, but they suddenly found themselves in a three-way deadlock for the Western Conference lead with the Rams and Colts. Fred Cone kicked a 25-yard field goal in the final 24 seconds, snatching victory from the previously unbeaten Los Angeles Rams 30-28. Cone was practically the whole show at Milwaukee as the Packers gained their 3-1 record. After booting only nine field goals all last season, he sent three through the uprights against the Rams— for 34, 45 and 25 yards. Three minutes before the winning kick, Jim Cason hauled in his third interception of day for the Rams and ran it 25 yards for a TD that put Los Angeles ahead 28-27.

October 23: Cleveland Browns (4-1) 41, Green Bay Packers (3-2) 10
(CLEVELAND) - Cleveland passed and powered their way to a 41-10 win over the Green Bay Packers to hold their spot at the top of the Eastern Conference. The Packers had the best pass defense statistics in the NFL coming into the game, but the Browns averaged 25 yards on each one completed. Otto Graham, who had had the best NFL pass completion mark (60.8 per cent), completed seven of 21 attempts for 187 yards against the Packers. George Ratterman entered the game in the final three minutes and completed three passes in three attempts, two of them good for touchdowns within less than 90 seconds. All told, Otto and George completed 10 of 15 passes for 250 yards. The Packers completed six of 22 for a net of 22 yards. Tobin Rote,Tobin Rote could manage just one completion in the second half for three yards. Although the game was close on the scoreboard for three quarters, the statistics told a far different story. Cleveland rolled up 454 yards while their hard-hitting defensive platoon held the Packers to 161. A 100-yard kickoff return by Al Carmichael supplied Green Bay's only touchdown. Charlie Brackins became the first black quarterback in Packer history, when he led the team on three plays in relief of Rote. Brackins would be released on November 8th, and replaced with Paul Held on the roster.

November 6: Chicago Bears (4-3) 52, Green Bay Packers (3-4) 31
(CHICAGO) - Chicago ran for 406 yards and never had to punt as they crushed Green Bay in a game that was over at the half. All but counted out of the Western Conference race four weeks ago, Chicago now had hopes of handing owner-coach George Halas the championship as a reirement gift. After dropping their first three games, the Bears recorded their fourth win in a row, crushing Green Bay, 52-31. The Bears were just short of magnificent against Green Bay, as they rolled to a 45 3 lead before the Packers were able to score a touchdown Although the Packers scored four touchdowns in the last quarter, it still was no contest Most of Green Bay's scoung came when the Bears had their defensive team playing on offense. Halas said afterwards, "It's really amazing that we didn t have to punt once. Even when we beat Washington 73-0 for the championship in 1940, we punted three times." Informed that the Bear rushing total was only 16 short of the record set by Detroit in 1934 against Pittsburgh, Halas said "I've been around too long to start thinking about records. They used to be important but winning is the most important thing" added the 61-year old coach who was one of the founders of the league.

(GREEN BAY) - The Green Bay Packers were back within striking distance of the Western Division championship, following a 31-14 victory over the Chicago Cardinals. The victory gave the Packers a 4-4 record, good enough for a tie with Baltimore for third place, back of the Chicago Bears and Los Angeles Rams, deadlocked for first with 5-3 marks. Tobin Rote, just up from a bout with a bad cold and intestinal flu, pitched and plunged the Packers to their triumph. He hit Gary Knafelc with a 25-yard scoring pass, connected with 15-yard touchdown tosses to Bill Howton and Al Carmichael, and ran for a touchdown himself from the one.

(MILWAUKEE) - The Green Bay Packers poured across 14 points in the fourth quarter to head off the San Francisco 49ers, 27-21, and remain in the thick of the race for the Western Division title. Tobin Rote set up the deciding touchdown by taking a lateral from Breezy Reid, who was trapped well behind the line of scrimmage, and legging it 49 yards to the 49ers' six. Howie Ferguson powered over from there to settle matters, although it took an intercepted pass with 10 seconds to go to stifle the 49ers for good. Rote had a hand in three Packer touchdowns, two of his passes going for scores. Y. A. Tittle, the 49ers' veteran quarterback, pitched for two TD's to end Carrol Hardy, the plays covering 33 and 58 yards. The 49ers ran up seven points in each of the first three quarters while the Packers scored 13 in the second and 14 in the final period, with the winning TD coming after Jerry Helluin fell on a Joe Perry fumble on the Packers' 40.

November 24: Detroit Lions (3-7) 24, Green Bay Packers (5-5) 10
(DETROIT) - The Lions, last-place defending champions in the West, occupied the role of spoilers in the following their 24-10 win over the Packers in their annual Thanksgiving Day battle. It was the second time within three weeks that the Lions eliminated a team from the title race which now is a run to the wire between the Chicago Bears and the Los Angeles Rams. The Lions, who dropped their first six games, wrecked the Baltimore Colts' title hopes November 5 by defeating them 24-14. Their latest win knocked the Packers out of contention. Detroit spotted Green Bay 10 points in the first quarter, but then the Packers fumbled away the game. The Lions capitalized on two miscues to tie the score 10-10 at the half and the Packers never recovered.

December 4: Green Bay Packers (6-5) 28, San Francisco 49ers (3-8) 7
(SAN FRANCISCO) - The Packers won for the first time ever in San Francisco, even as they were eliminated from the post-season race. Green Bay, operating savagely on defense, poured across three second period touchdowns as they cuffed the 49ers, 28-7. The victory also was the first on the road this season for Green Bay. The loss was the fifth straight for the feeble 49ers. The Packers parlayed a blocked punt and a pass interception into two of their second quarter touchdown and got a third after a brilliant punt return by Veryl Switzer. They added the icing to their game on a 60-yard pass play in the third period.

December 11: Los Angeles Rams (8-3-1) 31, Green Bay Packers (6-6) 7
(LOS ANGELES) - The Los Angeles Rams banged their way to the division crown with a 31-17 triumph over the Green Bay Packers. The win, reversing a previous loss to the Packers in mid-October, gave Los Angeles an 8-3-1 record for the regular season and erased any hope their two-time conquerors, the Chicago Bears, had of getting into the championship playoff. Rookie halfback Ron Waller, a candidate for rookie of the year honors, sent the huge crowd into ecstacy on the third play from scrimmage with a long touchdown run. The Rams were never behind, and while the Packers proved tough and never quit trying, a fumble on the one-yard line, a pass interception at a strategic moment, and a 55-yard punt return for six points by Skeets Quintan, spelled the end for Green Bay, which finished 6-6.

1955 IN REVIEW: Armed with a rejuvenated offense, the Packers moved up into third place by evenly splitting their season with wins and losses. Howie Ferguson, a hustling fullback, developed into a top-flight runner and gave the club a strong ground game to balance the attack. Tobin Rote's passes to Billy Howton and Gary Knafelc ate up yardage in large chunks, keeping enemy defenses spread for Ferguson's runs. Spearheaded by linebacker Roger Zatkoff and safety Bobby Dillon, the defense kept Green Bay in most of their games, while kicker Fred Cone helped win some of the six contests with his toe.

(WINSTON-SALEM, NC) - Little Eddie LeBaron sneaked six short inches on the last play of the game to give the Redskins a victory over the Packers Saturday night. Then the Redskins came to life. With LeBaron throwing and Billy Cox catching, the Redskins moved to two touchdowns in the final minutes

(MILWAUKEE) – The murmer of trade winds rustled the air after the Packers stamped a defeat on the record of the Chicago Cardinals in the Shrine exhibition football game Saturday night. Tobin Rote fired two touchdown passes of 76 and 72 yards in the final quarter to provide the Packers with their margin of victory over the Cardinals. The Packers, who had lost four in a row after opening their  exhibition season with a win over the Giants, roared from behind three times in vanquishing Ray Richard's Redbirds. The Cards led 7-0 in the  first quarter, 14-13 at the half and 21-20 with 45 seconds gone in the final quarter.
