September 30: Chicago Bears (1-0) 31, Green Bay Packers (0-1) 20
(GREEN BAY) - Green Bay unveiled a new offense where only one back remained behind the quarterback. It was usually Jack Cloud or Fred Cone. The other halfbacks - Tony Canadeo, Billy Grimes and Jug Girard - went out wide. The Packers ended up throwing the ball 41 times in a losing cause. The Bears scored once in every period to outlast the Packers in the 66th meeting between these two heated rivals. Johnny Lujack was the big man for the Bears, flipping a 50-yard pass for Chicago's first TD in the opening period and adding four extra points. In all, he connected with 12 of 19 passes.

October 7: Green Bay Packers (1-1) 35, Pittsburgh Steelers (0-1-1) 33
(MILWAUKEE) - In a game where the Packers gained 393 yards despite howling winds, Green Bay Packers blew a 28-point lead but came from behind on a fourth period touchdown pass to upset the Pittsburgh Steelers 35-33. With triple-threater Joe Geri bottled up, Chuck Ortmann, Fran Rogel and Lynn Chandnois carried the Steeler touchdown load, taking a 33-28 lead early in the third quarter after the Packers had scored four quick touchdowns. Ortmann passed 33 yards to Chandnois for one touchdown, Chandnois and Rogel drove over for two more and Jimmy Finks raced 28 yards with a stolen Packer pass for another. Geri booted a 26-yard field goal and converted four times. Packer quarterback Tobin Rote passed 16 yards to Bob Mann for the payoff touchdown with five minutes to play. It was the second Rote-to-Mann scoring heave. A poor into-the-wind kick by Geri set up a Packer touchdown and and interception of a Geri pass set up still another.

(GREEN BAY) - The big upset of the day in the NFL took place in Green Bay where the Packers upended the unbeaten Philadelphia Eagles, 37-24. The Packers' victory was a personal show by Bobby Thomason, who threw three touchdowns. Tobin Rote pitched for another score and Bob Summerhays ran an interception 88 yards for the other tally. The first half wound up in a 7-7 tie, but footballs were all over the field in the third and fourth quarters, with the Packers notching 10 points in the third quarter and 20 in the finale.

October 21: Los Angeles Rams (3-1) 28, Green Bay Packers (2-2) 0
(MILWAUKEE) - Elroy Hirsch caught three passes for 111 yards, and Dan Towler ran for 144 yards, as the Rams completely throttled the Packers. Starting in drizzle and ending in sunshine, Packer fortunes went the other way. Led by sharp-passing Bobby Thornason, they knocked twice at the goal, then faded before a four-touchdown Ram rally in the last 16 minutes. The loss dropped the Packers from a first-place tie in the National Football League's Western Division to a fourth-place tie with San Francisco at 2-2. The Rams and Chicago Bears lead with 3-1. The Packers, fresh from upsets over Pittsburgh and Philadelphia, appeared to be headed for a third surprise victory early in the game. The two teams battled to a scoreless tie in the first half. In the third period, Thomason passed to the Ram one-yard line, and Los Angeles held. That ended the Packer threats, and as the weather cleared the Rams broke loose. Fullback Dan Towler raced 79 yards to a Ram touchdown late in the third period for a 7 to 0 lead. Bob Waterfield fired a 38- yard touchdown pass to halfback Tom Kalmanir early in the fourth, Norm Van Brocklin tossed to Elroy (Crazy Legs) Hirsch for an 81-yard score and halfback Jerry Williams plunged five yards for the final blow. Los Angeles, known for fancy passing, struck hardest on the ground. Altogether, the Rams ran and passed for 502 yards to the Packers' 317. The Packers filled the air with 50 passes and completed 22 for 243 yards. Thomason, a former Ram, led the way by hitting on 19 of 36 tosses for 207 yards.

Green Bay Packers (3-2) 29, New York Yanks (0-4-1) 27
(NEW YORK) - Bobby Thomason had his best day as a Packer, completing 15 of 22
passes for 214 yards and three touchdowns. He also led Green Bay down the field, setting up Fred Cone's winning field goal with 11 seconds remaining. It would turn out to be the last Packer win of the season. The Yanks, the only winless team in the league, apparently had the Packers beaten going into the fourth period with a 21-6 margin. Then, Thomason tossed his three touchdown passes, to send Green Bay out in front. But with only a minute and 12 seconds to go, Bob Celeri pitched a 10-yard scoring aerial to Dan Garza to put the Yanks back in the lead by one point. That's the way it remained until Cone's successful kick.

The Packers closed to 17-10 a few minutes later. Doak Walker was on the receiving end of a Layne pass to put Detroit out front 24-10 with just over a minute left. The Packers scored with 10 seconds left to make the final score 24-17. The game was played in 16-degree weather.

November 11: Pittsburgh Steelers (2-4-1) 28, Green Bay Packers (3-4) 7
(PITTSBURGH) - The Packers were slapped with their third straight loss, bowing 28-7 to Joe Geri and the Pittsburgh Steelers. With Geri's running, passing and kicking sparking the Steelers to their second victory in seven starts, they marked up four touchdowns before the Packers could score. And by then it was too late for Green Bay, now second from the bottom in the National Conference with a 3-4 record. Geri ignited the first Pittsburgh touchdown drive with a 17-yard run and a 24-yard pass to Truett Smith. Lynn Chandnois carried it over from the 13. Still in the first quarter, Jerry Shipkey intercepted Bobby Thomason's pass to Bob Mann and returned it to the Packer's 16. Three plays later, Jerry Nuzum plowed over from the three. With time running
out in the half, Green Bay gambled on fourth down—and lost. The Steelers took over the Packers' 26 and Geri's
plunge from the four several plays later made it 21-0 at the half. Chandnois' 35-yard pass to Henry Minarik early in the final period wrapped up the Steeler scoring. Tobin Rote prevented a shut-out when he hit Mann in the end zone with a 25-yard toss with two and a half minutes left. The rough game resulted in 186 yards of penalties and Steeler John Schweder and Packer Ray Dipero were thrown out in the third quarter for fighting. The Steelers outgained Green Bay on the ground, 176 yards to 59, but were slightly behind in the air as the Packers gained 159 yards passing to 148 for Pittsburgh. There were a total of 50 aerials attempted. Green Bay tried 29 and completed 18 of them.

(CHICAGO) - Chicago made it nine straight wins over the Packers. The Bears had their troubles beating the Packers, after trailing 13-10 at the half. But George Gulyanics and Julie Rykovich broke it open in the second half by scoring after long drives. Tobin Rote tallied twice for the Packers in the second quarter. Rote threw 33 passes, and ran 14 times for 150 yards. The rest of the Packers ran 10 times for 23 yards.

November 22: Detroit Lions (6-2-1) 52, Green Bay Packers (3-6) 35
(DETROIT) - The highest scoring Thanksgiving Day game in history was the first of 13 straight Turkey Day appearances in Detroit by the Packers. The Lions got in gear slowly but they made up a 21-10 deficit in the second quarter when Bobby Layne flipped touchdown passes to Leon Hart for 33 yards, Doak Walker for 35 and Hart again for 19. Layne's passing magic—which gave him a season's total of 24 scoring throws to date compared to the all-time league record of 28 set by Sid Luckman of the Chicago Bears in 1943—completed 20 of 36 attempts for 296 yards. Three dazzling runs that thrilled a Thanksgiving day crowd of 33,452 ended the rout in the third period. With 30 seconds gone, Bob Hoerneschmeyer skirted around the left end, cut back and went 85 yards for a touchdown. It was the league's longest scoring run from scrimmage this season. Then Jack Christiansen got into the act. He took a Green Bay punt on his 29 and raced to the end zone. A few minutes later, he grabbed another punt and churned 89 yards around and through the Packers for a score. The Lions shattered their own all-time single game scoring record of 49 points set against the Yanks just a year ago.

December 2: New York Yanks (1-7-2) 31, Green Bay Packers (3-7) 28
(GREEN BAY) - In their final home game of the year, Green Bay retired the jersey of Don Hutson, meaning no one would ever wear #14 again. Tobin Rote ran for 92 yards, but the Packers ended the day embarassed, as the Yanks picked up their only win of the season and the last before moving to Dallas. The Yanks, who have been playing the most breath-taking losing games in the history of the NFL, finally pulled one out when they licked the Packers on three last quarter touchdown passes by Bob Celeri. George Ratterman also passed for one TD. Tobin Rote flipped for two scores and went over once himself for the Packers.

December 9: San Francisco 49ers (6-4-1) 31, Green Bay Packers (3-8) 19
(SAN FRANCISCO) - Two fourth quarter touchdowns gave San Francisco a win and clinched a winning season, while the Packers dropped their sixth straight. Frankie Albert engineered both of the scores before a chilled crowd of 18,621. One drive went 58 yards and was capped by Jim Monachino's three yard slash through right tackle. The final tally came on Albert's pass to Gordon Soltau in the end zone after Bob White intercepted a Tobin Rote pass on the Packer 40. Green Bay jumped into a 3 to 0 lead midway in the opening period when Fred Cone kicked a 20-yard field goal. The 49ers quickly tied the score when Soltau booted a 23-yard field goal. Cone put the Packers out in front again in the second quarter with an accurate, 37-yard field goal booted from a slight angle. An 80-yard scoring drive, with San Francisco's alternate quarterback Y. A. Tittle calling the plays, gave the 49ers a momentary lead. Left halfback Joe Arenas ran the last seven yards for the score. Then Tobin Rote, starring in the quarterback role for Green Bay, maneuvered his club into the lead again with a touchdown shortly before the half ended With the ball on San Francisco's three yard line, Rote connected with Ray Pelfrey in the end zone. The drive was good for 76 yards and was highlighted by Rote's 46-yard pass to Dom Moselle. Opening the third period, San Francisco smashed to a touchdown, traveling 75 yards in 10 plays with Arenas going over from the one yard marker. Albert directed the scoring thrust and got off a 34 yard run of his own. The Packers went out in front again in the same quarter, however, after Harper Davis recovered a 49er fumble. Rote completed four passes to Carlton Elliott, the last for 11 yards and a touchdown. The drive was good or 64 yards in five plays. Cone's conversion attempt failed when he ball hit the upright.

December 16: Los Angeles Rams (8-4) 42, Green Bay Packers (3-9) 14
(LOS ANGELES) - Bob Waterfield threw five touchdown passes, as the Rams won the National Conference. San Francisco defeated Detroit 21-17 to put Los Angeles in the position to move to the NFL Championship game. For Green Bay, which lost its seventh in a row to end the season, Tobin Rote and Bobby Thomason combined to pass the ball 56 times and racked up 379 yard in passing offense. Capt. Waterfield threw three of his scores to his star right end, Elroy Hirsch, the longest for 73 yards. The other Ram score came on a brilliant run by Jerry Williams—99 yards after taking a field goal try by the Packers' Fred Cone. Hirsch's three touchdown catches brought his season total to 17 and tied the all-time pro league record established in 1942 by Don Hutson of the Green Bay Packers. The stubborn Packers held the vaunted Rams to a 14-14 tie at the half, and seemed destined to make things even tougher for the local golden boys, but it was not to be.

1951 IN REVIEW: Green Bay lost their last seven games to finish a limp fifth in the National Conference. Even the hapless New York Yanks downed the Packers 31-28 for their only win of the season. Coach Gene Ronzani looked high and low for running backs, and the best he could find were Fred Cone, whose kicking far surpassed his ball carrying, and Tony Canadeo, a veteran of the Lambeau era who had long ago left his best days behind. That left the burden of the running as well as the throwing to quarterback Tobin Rote. Ends Bob Mann and Ray Pelfrey caught many of Rote's passes, but, so, unfortunately, did enemy defensive backs, as Green Bay tossed an league-worst 29 interceptions.

August 25: Green Bay Packers (1-0) 17, Chicago Cardinals 14
(GREEN BAY) – Veteran Ted Fritsch booted a field goal in the last minute of play Saturday night that gave strength to the old adage about history repeating itself. Fritsch's good right foot meant a victory for the Packers over the Chicago Cardinals. It was that same 17-14 count that downed Coach Curly Lambeau's Cardinals a year ago. Fritsch's goal climaxed a fourth quarter rally in which the Bays tied the Cards, 14-14, on a 76-yard pass play from Tobin Rote to Ray Pefrey.

Coach Gene Ronzani's club trailed in scoring before the Shrine charity game crowd of 19,282 but led in nearly everything else. The Packers, behind 14-0 in the second period, cut the Eagle lead to 14-10 by halftime. Three times in the last half, they pounded at the Eagle goal, but mainly because of penalties they failed to score.

(MINNEAPOLIS) - Joe Perry and Joe Arenas raced through the Packers defense for long touchdown runs as the 49ers swept easily to victory Wednesday night. Arenas contributed the most spectacular performance, picking up a punt on his own five-yard line, dodging through a swarm of tacklers on the ten, and then racing all the way for a third quarter touchdown. In the same period Perry broke off right tackle and rolled 42 yards for
the Packers' goal. The third 49er touchdown came midway in the fourth quarter when Rex Berry scored from eight yards out on an off-tackle run to climax a 62-yard march. A crowd of 19,021 fans, the largest pro football turnout in Minnesota history, watched the game.
