(GREEN BAY) - Playing to the fifth tie in the 22-year history of the series, Green Bay and Chicago kicked off the 1943 season. With Sid Luckman throwing the ball all over the field, the Bears took the air lanes to their first touchdowns, while the Packers, outrushing Chicago 189 yards to 138, stayed on the ground for their scores. It was not until late in the final period, when Green Bay was trailing by seven, that Don Hutson brought out his change of pace on the business end of a pass. The Alabama Flyer, due to leave for his father's funeral after the game, took Tony Canadeo's first offering to the Bear 27, and a moment later snatched another from the hands of Harry Clark and Ray McLean to score. A 42-yard field attempt by Bob Snyder, to win the game with less than a minute to go, was partially deflected and went wide.

(CHICAGO) - Rookie Irv Comp tossed two touchdown passes, Lou Brock added another and Tony Canadeo set up a fourth as Green Bay Packers smashed the Chicago Cardinals, 28-7. The Packers, in defeating the Cards for the 11th consecutive time since 1937, scored twice in short order in the first quarter. Joel Mason scored the first two Packer touchdowns for the only scores of his career. Despite the strong overhead barrage thrown up by rookie Ronnie Cahill the Cardinals could move into the end zone only in the second quarter. Cahill passed 20 times and completed 11 for 137 yards, but had five of his tosses stray into Packer's arms.

(GREEN BAY) - Green Bay ran for a season-high 239 yards, led by Tony Canadeo's 71 yard effort, in blasting the Lions. Canadeo also threw a career-high three touchdown passes. With Don Hutson being used as a decoy, the Packers built up terrific heads of steam for marches of 42 and 61 yards in the first quarter, a 75 yard drive in the second period, and onslaughts of 67 and 54 yards in the third and fourth stanzas respectively. Detroit pushed across both touchdowns on plays that swept the length of the field. The first Lion score came on two plays that were good for 80 yards and the final marker came in the closing minutes on a forward and lateral combination that ripped off 75 yards. The only other Lion threat came in the first period, when they went 67 yards but lost the ball on downs. Green Bay also tried three field goals, but without success. The first Packer score came before the game was two minutes old. After an exchange of punts Lou Brock passed to Harry Jucunski for a first down and 38 yards on the Detroit four. Ted Fritsch who played brilliantly went over, and the rout was on.

(MILWAUKEE) - Sammy Baugh, who played all but the last seven minutes, completed 14 passes, including four for touchdowns, as the defending NFL champions rolled. Andy Farkas who headed the Skins' ground attack, powered through for the other score. The first five minutes were a good example of what was to come for Green Bay. In that time Washington marched 80 yards in ten plays to a touchdown. After taking the kickoff to the 20, Farkas gained six yards, and Wilbur Moore broke through the line for 47 yards. A few plays later and Farkas went over from the one foot line.

(DETROIT) - The Packers thumped the Lions again, 27-6. Frankie Sinkwich, although he passed for Detroit's lone score, had seven of his aerials intercepted, equalling a misfortune that befell Parker Hall of Cleveland against the Packers last year. Green Bay also nabbed two other Detroit aerials, those nine interceptions being two greater than the current NFL record which had been hit seven times. Eight different Packers picked off passes, with Hutson the only one to pull down two.

(NEW YORK) - Tony Canadeo picked up the slack with 123 yards rushing as Green Bay scored two touchdowns in the last five minutes to hand the New York Giants a 35-21 defeat. The Packers, with Don Hutson breaking five of his own league records, rallied after the Giants came back from a 21-7 halftime deficit at the half to knot the game up early in the fourth quarter. Hutson caught seven passes to set the NFL record with 358 career receptions. He was on the receiving end of two touchdown passes to boost his record to 77. He scored 17 points, giving him a career record of 578. Hutson also picked up 118 yards with his seven catches for a new NFL record of 5,926 career yards. With Canadeo doing most of the running, the Packers completed 15 out of 21 passes for a total of 241 yards. The final scoring drive started from the 35-yard line when the Giants got away a short punt. On the first play, Canadeo broke off tackle and went all the way. The Packers were playing without Charley Brock, who was lost for the next month due to an appendectomy.

(CHICAGO) - The Chicago Bears gained revenge for the only blot on their record, a 21-21 tie by the Packers on Opening Day, by beating the Packers 21-7, in the slime of Wrigley Field. Chicago came within two wins of clinching the Western Division championship - or one more Bear victory and a Packer defeat would do it. Sid Luckman was the major factor in compiling the Chicago margin. He broke a 7-7 tie in the third period with a 38-yard touchdown pass to Harry Clark. It was Luckman's 15th touchdown pass of the season. He also plunged across the goal from the 1-yard line after a 70 yard Bear march at the start of the final quarter to seal the win. The Packers, a formidable outfit in the first half, stalled sadly in the final two periods, making only one first down and completing just one pass.

(MILWAUKEE) - Don Hutson turned in another great performance, scoring 23 points
as the Packers smothered an impotent Chicago Cardinal squad, 35-14. Hutson, scoring three touchdowns and kicking five extra points, ran his season's total to 78, putting him far out in front in the league's scoring race as the Packers dominated the play in all but the final quarter. It was a typical Packer passing show in the early stages as they ran up a comfortable lead and then coasted in. They went 73 yards, mostly through the air, for their first score, travelled 66 yards for their second, and 54 for the third marker in the first half. The Cardinals narrowed the margin in the third quarter after blocking a Packer punt but another pass play, good for 86 yards, and a pass interception by Hutson who raced 84 yards for the fifth touchdown put the Packers in front for good.

(BROOKLYN) - Don Hutson snagged eight passes for 237 yards of gain, topping his old high of 209 yards made last year against Cleveland. Hutson scored two touchdowns, booted four extra points and a field goal and ran his scoring lead to 97 points as the Packers rolled over the Dodgers, 31-7. Irv Comp intercepted three passes, and returned one for a touchdown. The win enabled Green Bay to retain a slender chance of tying the Bears for the Western title, but since the Chicagoans were scheduled to play their weak cross-town rivals, the Cardinals, next Sunday, a win there would clinch it for the Bears.

EXHIBITION - November 28: Green Bay 62, New London 14
(New London, CT) - Most of Green Bay's mighty first string sat one out yesterday, but the reserves had a field day as they won an exhibition for the Packers against the New London Diesels, 62-14. With Irv Comp bouncing into the ball game long enough to head an aerial attack which produced five of the nine Packer touchdowns, Green Bay toyed with New London until the closing minutes when the losers broke through for all their points. Held to a single marker in the first period, the Bays opened the second stanza with a lineup of regulars, except for Don Hutson, and piled up 62 points before the gun stopped them. Hutson managed to get in for four minutes during the deluge, during which he converted two points from placement. Harry Jacunski, Green Bay's end, was honored by nearby New Britain home town fans, among them his mother, before the game. In action briefly during the high-scoring second session, he tallied the winner's second touchdown. The Packers threw 34 passes and completed 27 in addition to intercepting four Diesel passes. They made 22 first downs against the Diesel's one. Most every one had a hand in the scoring and only Dick Evans and Joe Laws made more than one touchdown. They missed only a single extra point.

(PHILADELPHIA) - Don Hutson personally choked off a Phil-Pitt rally by catching two fourth-period touchdown passes to give Green Bay a 38-28 victory before an all time record Philadelphia crowd of 34,294. Hutson, playing in what he claims was the last game of his nine record-writing seasons, extended his endless chain of all-time league records to include 83 touchdown passes caught and 641 points scored. Both the Packers and the Steagles closed their seasons with this contest, with Green Bay spoiling whatever chance the combined team from Pennsylvania had for a first-place tie in the league's Eastern Division. The Phil-Pitt combine twice came to tie the game in an explosive first period, but Greasy Neale's charges dropped behind when Hutson booted a 25-yard field goal in the second stanza.

(PITTSBURGH) - The Green Bay Packers spoiled the debut of the Pittsburgh Steelers-Philadelphia Eagles football combine with a 28-10 victory in a pre-season exhibition game before 18,000 fans at Forbes Field here Saturday night. A pass from Andy Uram to Harry Jacunski was good for 52 yards and the Packers' first touchdown midway in the opening quarter. The Packers, scored again in the second period when
Ted Fritsch took it over from the three after Canadeo had passed to Hutson and Jacunski from the Packer 38. A drive that began on the Packers' own 25 culminated in a score when Canadeo passed to Hutson for 55 yards, and a touchdown in the third period. The Packers' final score came in the closing minutes of the last quarter when Irv Comp recovered a fumble and ran 65 yards for a touchdown. Hutson accounted for all the Packers' extra points except the last, which was kicked by Sorenson.

(BALTIMORE) - Slingin' Sammy Baugh's aerials back-fired in the second half today and the Green Bay Packers took a 23-21 thriller from the Washington Redskins in a pre-season exhibition before 45,000 shirt-sleeved fans in Baltimore Stadium. Don Hutson's 20-yard fourth-period field goal was the margin of victory. The Packers went the length of the field for a touchdown three minutes after the opening kickoff. Pass interference on Hutson gave Green Bay the ball on the six-inch line and Ted Fritsch plunged over. Baugh started throwing and five minutes later the Redskins tied it at 7-7 after a 93-yard drive. The payoff was a 22-yard pass from Baugh to Andy Farkas in the end zone. Behind 23-14 with three minutes left, Washington scored on a pass from Sammy Baugh to Bob Masterson, but the Redskins' last minute efforts to score again and win failed. Fritsch scored two touchdowns for Green Bay, one on a 35-yard runback of an intercepted pass, and Uram made another on a pass from Tony Canadeo.

1943 IN REVIEW: Don Huston had hauled in many a pass into the end zone, but he got a chance to get on the other end of the pipe on one play. Huston took a handoff and headed off to what looked like an end run. With the defenders converging on him, the fast end pulled up short and tossed a 38-yard pass to Harry Jacunski all alone in the end zone. After the play, the poker-faced Huston broke into a grin. Passing, it seemed, was not that difficult. Most of the Green Bay passes were thrown by Tony Canadeo and Irv Comp, since star tailback Cecil Isbell had quit to coach the Purdue Boilermakers. Isbell explained why he quit while still young - "I had not been up in Green Bay long when I saw Lambeau around the locker room and tell players like Herber and Gatenbein and Hank Bruder that they were all done with the Packers. I sat there and watched and then I vowed it would never happen to me. I'd quit before they came around to tell me."
