The ball hit Chicago DE Dick Plasman and bounced back into the endzone. Tom Jones fell on the ball for Green Bay, giving the Bears a safety and the win.

The Bears marched 73 yards in a desperate last minute effort to score and retain their slim title chance, but a fourth down pass slipped from the fingers of Les McDonald as he was hit at the goal line. The Packers, outgained in first downs 16 to 7 and in total yardage 274 to 178, took advantage of three Bear fumbles to win. Bob Monnett, who threw two touchdown passes, was lost for the season with a knee injury.

(Detroit) - Green Bay assured themselves of at least a tie for the Western Division championship by overwhelming the Lions in front of 45,139 fans, the largest crowd ever to see a football game in Detroit. After a scoreless opening period, Green Bay connected on the first play of the second quarter when Cecil Isbell tossed a 12-yard touchdown pass to Clark Hinkle. Later in the period Green Bay took advantage of a poor Detroit punt and drove to the five, when Hinkle plunged over. Detroit got back in the game briefly early in the second half when a 96-yard march produced a touchdown. The Detroit threat was short lived as Green Bay came back to score two more times. In the fourth period Andy Uram clinched the win, with a 70-yard touchdown run, as the Packers rang up 217 yards on the ground. On a sour note, Don Hutson went down with an injured knee, that would impact the rest of his season.

(New York) - Tuffy Leemans, the Giants RB, broke away on a 75-yard touchdown gallop in the third quarter that gave New York a lead they would not relinquish. The Packers had pushed the Giants all over the field in the first half and were leading 3 to 2 when Leemans went to work. Mel Hein, the great center for the Giants, clinched the win early in the fourth quarter, when he took the ball from Clarke Hinkle and dashed 50 yards for a touchdown. It was one of five interceptions thrown by Cecil Isbell. Green Bay would now have to wait to see if they would be in a Western Division playoff game.

New York Giants (8-2-1) 23, Green Bay Packers (8-3) 17
(New York) - The Giants would host the Green Bay Packers at the Polo Grounds, in a bruising thriller that was staged for the largest crowd - 48,120 - to see a championship game up to that time. With the victory, the Giants became the first team to win the championship twice since the divisional split-up. The Giants blocked two punts early in the game, and capitalized on both with Ward Cuff kicking a 13-yard field goal and Tuffy Leemans blasting over on a 6-yard run. Arnie Herber's 50-yard scoring pass to Carl Mulleneaux got the Packers on the scoreboard, but Ed Danowski hit Hap Barnard for a 20-yard touchdown pass and a 16-7 lead. The Packers closed to 16-14 at halftime on Clark Hinkle's 6-yard run, then took the lead 17-16 on Engebretsen's third quarter field goal. However, the Giants stormed as Danowski hit Hank Soar for the game-winning 23-yard pass.

1938 IN REVIEW: With Arnier Herber slowing up, Curly Lambeau brought in a new rookie tailback with a strong passing arm. Cecil Isbell not only could throw the ball, but he could also carry it around the end for good yardage. Lambeau broke the rookie in gradually, alternating him with Herber at tailback, and, sometimes, playing them both in the same backfield. Isbell hauled in a few Herber aerials, and the rookie sometimes caught defenses napping by throwing to the lead-footed Herber. Of course, both men ofent found their main target in Don Hutson, who was heading for his usual receiving champions when he hurt his knee in Detroit on November 13. After the injury, the Packers grimly hung onto the lead in the Western Division, and won the title despite a 15-3 loss to the Giants in the finale.
